Mob attacks cops
Udhampur, June 25 Cops resorted to lathicharge and fired several rounds in the air to save the police and civil officers from the wrath of the mob, which damaged official vehicles, besides injuring nine cops. Twelve persons, including eight women, were rounded up by the police on the charge of rioting. The villagers claimed the piece of land belonged to them and they had been using it as a graveyard. Revenue officer of the area Mahesh Chander said that a piece of land measuring 87 kanals (khasra No. 425-26) actually belonged to the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) which had decided to hand over this land to the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). Eye witnesses said a team of the JMC, along with some revenue officials, had gone to take possession of a piece of land belonging to the JDA at Pargalata village. The JDA had decided to give this to the JMC for the construction of a shed for stray cattle and dogs. As the officials reached Pargalata village, a mob set up barricades and stopped them from going further. When the police tried to remove the barricades, the mob resorted to stoning the cops. As the mob outnumbered cops, the police resorted to cane charge and later fired several rounds into the air to disperse the stone-throwing people. |
