Udhampur, June 19 Officials sources said the Kishtwar police received a complaint from Lal Devi wife of Prem Nath Kishtwar alleging Zulfikar Ali deceived her and her son Surjit Kumar and took Rs 10,000 for arranging a job for Surjit Kumar in the Education Department. Zulfikar Ali told the woman he had been working as journalist with a local newspaper and a TV channel and had links with ministers and higher officers. The police said the complainant had mentioned in her application neither her son got a job nor the money had been returned. The accused had been demanding more money from them the complaint said. Acting on the complaint, the police nabbed the surrendered militant- turned cheat- Zulfikar Ali son of Atta Mohammad Rather a resident of main bazaar Kishtwar. The police said he was a surrendered militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen and had laid down arms in 1996. "He was impersonating as a reporter of a local TV channel, Rahi Manzil and Transparent Time (newspapers)". The accused has reportedly deceived many other people in the area on the same pretext. Identity cards recovered from his possession were seized for verification and found fake. A case under Section 420 of the RPC has been registered against him at Kishtwar police station and investigation was on. Meanwhile, the Doda police and security forces claimed busting a militant hideout in the Warwan area of Marwah and recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition. Official sources said a joint search operation was launched by Doda police and 7 RR in the Gumri Warwan area under Marwah police station and during search operation hideout of militants was busted and one, 12 bore gun, six AK magazines, three cartridges of 12 bore, one grenade, one polaroid camera, one telescope, one knife besides other incriminating material were recovered from it. |

Jammu, June 19 The two-hour long performance by the Kathak legend and his troupe began with a tribute to Lord Krishna which was presented in dance form by Birju Maharaj's disciple Saswati Sen at the Jammu University's Zorawar Singh auditorium. “'Silence also has music of its own,'' said Birju Maharaj and he explained it with his foot steps producing sound waves on the stage. Pandit Birju Maharaj said he now had planned a dance production based on the Chinese folklore after his memorable production 'Romeo and Juliet', which he had produced a few years back along with Louis Bank. Birju Maharaj, who composed music and also sang for two song sequences of Satyajit Ray's 'Shatranj ke Khilari' and choreographed the songs in 'Devdas' and 'Gadar' in later stages, said 'kathak' was not being presented in its real and original form as in the past films. |
3 bodies exhumed
Rajouri, June 19 Sources said Muhammad Yousuf son of Raj Muhammad, Muhammad Aziz son of Muhammad Hussain and Abdul Aziz son of Sher Muhammad (all of Kothdhara) went missing after they were allegedly picked from their native village by men of 18 Dogra regiment on October 9, 1997. After picking them up from their village, the army had shifted them to Veer Badeswar camp and thereafter there were no whereabouts of the them, sources added. Sources further said the families of the missing persons fearing their relatives might have been killed by the army had approached the district administration for ascertaining their whereabouts. The family members had even claimed army after killing the trio in custody had buried them in pits near the Army camp in Veer Badeswar. This morning, a high-level team comprising, doctors, police officers and a magistrate after tracing the pits in presence of the family members exhumed the bodies. |

Srinagar, June 19 The police here said PDP patron Mufti Sayeed was to address people at Dara-Shikoh Garden at Bijbehara in Anantnag district today, which already was postponed. However the police had tip-off some unidentified militants had planted two IEDs at the venue. A spokesman of the police here said on a search of the area, personnel deployed on the venue spotted two IEDs planted near the garden gates and to avoid any civilian casualty, the whole area was evacuated. |

Russian envoy calls on Azad
Srinagar, June 19 Azad apprised the Russian envoy that a multi-pronged strategy had been put in place in the state to address political, economic and social issues simultaneously. He said three round-table conferences were convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in which representatives of people of all areas participated and put forth their viewpoints, adding that dialogue was also held with separatists and others. The Chief Minister said the Assembly elections held in the state in 2002 were free and fair. He added that the instructions had been given to the security forces that while dealing with militancy, no human rights violations should occur. |
