Tohra’s death anniversary to be state function
Wife not interested; avoids function
Patiala, March 25
The death anniversary of Gurcharan Singh Tohra will be celebrated as a state function on April 1 every year all over the state. The decision was taken by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in consultation with the family of late Gurcharan Singh Tohra.

State Cabinet nod to vote-on-account

The Punjab Cabinet, at a meeting here today, approved the vote-on-account for the first quarter (April-June) of 2007-08 and also supplementary demands for 2006-07. A spokesperson of the Punjab Government said the state would lay more emphasis on the strategy for the development of Punjab for which the existing plan.

SGPC sewadar, among two arrested for looting banks

The police claimed having arrested two persons-including an employee of the SGPC, for involvement in bank dacoities which have rocked various districts of the state including Majitha, Tarn Taran, Ferozepore, Bathinda and Muktsar in the recent past.

Boy figures in sleaze CD; family goes in hiding
Tarn Taran, March 25
Even as a sleaze CD, in which a baptised boy figured with a married woman of the town, has been in circulation, the entire family of the alleged accused has disappeared, following police raids. The accused boy had acted the role of a Nihang in a religious Punjabi film, which recently hit the theatre screens. The CD, which has already rocked the town, has come as a great shock for the producer of the film, who belongs to Amritsar, since the picture of the alleged accused was displayed on the film posters.

Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh facing death sentence in Pakistan, today threatened to go on a fast-unto-death if no “concrete step” was taken by the Central Government for his safe repatriation to India.

HC should appoint lower court judges: CJ
Fazilka, March 25
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Vijender Kumar Jain has asked the Punjab Government to give the rights of appointing judges in lower courts to the high court to expedite the disposal of pending cases. Jain was here today to inaugurate a legal aid clinic at the local courts complex.

Cong leaders booked
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 25
The police has booked certain Congress leaders, including chairman of the market committee, Chanarthal, Surinder Singh, under Sections 420, 406, 120-B of the IPC, allegedly for duping people of lakhs of rupees.

1.5 kg black powder recovered
Sangrur, March 25
The Dhuri police today recovered 1.5 kg of black powder explosive material (like RDX), 300 gm brown powder, 76 cartridges, three empty cartridges of 380 bore, two cartridges of .12 bore and a bundle of military colour wire from a field in Bhojowali village, near Dhuri.

PTU centres in rural areas soon
Pathankot, March 25
To promote technical education in rural areas, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, will open coaching centres here. The free-of-cost coaching for two weeks will help the students prepare for combined entrance tests to be conducted by the PTU for admission to different courses offered by various technical institutes affiliated to the university.

Vacant posts of teacher to be filled

The Punjab Government has decided to fill all vacant posts of teacher in the state. The posts abolished by the previous Congress government will also be revived. This was stated by D.S. Cheema, adviser to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Minister accused of protecting BJP councillor, brother
Pathankot, March 25
The district unit of the Government Teachers Union has threatened to organise demonstration against the police, here in case an FIR is not registered against a BJP councillor and his brother for assaulting a teacher when he prevented them from helping some students in copying in the examination centre at government senior secondary school, in Daulatpur locality.
