Police pressurizing victim not to
name SP Kapurthala, February 20 However, the Kapurthala district police is allegedly pressuring Dev Singh not to name Tarn Taran SP (Detective) for the alleged kidnapping. This was alleged by Dev Singh while talking to The Tribune. Dev Singh said that some senior officers of Kapurthala district had agreed to file an FIR against the NRI, Mr. Baljit Singh Lukhy, but at the same time they were putting pressure on him not to name the SP (D). However, he was sticking to his guns to include the name of SP (D) in his complaint, he added. Kapurthala SSP Rajiv Ahir said that DSP (Bholath) Harpreet Mandher had been asked to verify the case. Meanwhile, Mandher told The Tribune that he was still inquiring the case. In the meantime, the representatives of Kirit Kisan Union (KKU) and Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) Kashmir Singh Ghugshor and Balwinder Singh Bhullar threatened to start an agitation if a case was not registered against SP (D) by tomorrow. Certain policemen of Tarn Taran district allegedly kidnapped Dev Singh (55) from Bhullar Bet village falling under Dhilwan police division of Kapurthala district on gun-point. This was alleged by Dev Singh’s wife Gurdish Kaur in a complaint to SSP Kapurthala Rajiv Ahir. Gurdish Kaur alleged that policemen led by SP (D) had kidnapped her husband at gun-point at the behest of an NRI Baljit Singh Lukhy, a friend of SP (D). Lukhy had some enmity with Dev Singh, she alleged However, Tarn Taran SP (D) Surinder Singh Mand said that a complaint was pending against Dev Singh and his son Jassu with the CIA staff of Tarn Taran district police. That was why, some police personnel of the CIA staff had brought Dev Singh with them yesterday morning for recording his statement and he had been allowed to go after that, he added. |
UK delegation visits PTU Jalandhar, February 20 The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster, Dr Geoffrey Copland, and the Director of Scholarships, Dr Colin Matheson, said they had come to visit the site and examine whether the project was coming up as had been perceived by Lord Sawraj Paul of the Caparo group and Chancellor of the university. They said that they were taking along a copy of the syllabi which had been designed by the PTU so that they could add on some ideas and inputs for any improvements, if required. The duo said since Lord Paul was quite a busy man there, he wanted them to go and apprise him of the progress being made. The delegation arrived around noon and left for New Delhi this evening. While the PTU Vice-Chancellor, Dr S.K. Salwan, was away today, the visitors were attended to by Dr V.K. Arora, Registrar, and Dr R.P. Singh, Dean. PTU officials said while they had been asked to complete the project by June, they hoped that it would near completion by August. They said 30 seats each would be filled through CET in three different specialised B.Tech courses. Dr N.K. Mehta of IIT Roorkee has been appointed the director of the school, they added. The PTU has signed another MoU with the CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, Hyderabad, to undertake joint research projects on topics of mutual interest. While Dr Salwan is yet to arrive back from Hyderabad after signing the pact, the Registrar confirmed about the progress in this regard. The faculty and students of both the institutes will be looking at current research interests on a wide range of topics, including mathematical economics, mathematical physics, mathematical biology, operations research, game theory, discrete mathematics, graph theory, number theory, cryptography, official statistics and sample surveys, applied statistics, financial statistics, biometrics, econometrics, bio-informatics, statistical quality control applications, computer science, data mining, neural networks, signing processing, artificial intelligence, robotics and expert systems. The students of Hyderabad institute will be granted recognition by the PTU for the purpose of academic collaboration and students will be admitted in the PTU for the award of degrees and diplomas. The institution in return will make available to faculty, research and computer scientists library and computing facilities free of charge. There will also be a provision for inter-library loan and making available photocopies of research material. The PTU will also sponsor fellowship to six research fellows in computer science in every year, besides exploring the possibility of instituting a professor Chair in the area of computer science, information technology or allied area. |
2 Amritsar residents die in mishap Kapurthala, February 20 Dhilwan SHO Nirmal Singh said that the deceased were identified as Ranjit Singh and Varinder Chatha, residents of Ranjit Avenue in Amritsar. They were coming from Amritsar to Jalandhar in their car. The injured have been identified as Amit Kapoor, Bharat Kapoor and Kamal. They are also residents of a locality near the Golden Temple. The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital. |
Blast victim cremated Batala, February 20 The victim was on duty as Railway Police Force personnel in the Samjhauta Express that was blown up by militants near Panipat yesterday. He was the only breadwinner of the family and the only brother of six sisters. He is survived by his wife and three children. The body was lit to fire by his father. Rajinder joined the RPF in 1988. |
IT raids on jewellery shops Phagwara, February 20 According to sources, the raids were conducted on the premises of Jaura Jewellers, New Jaura Jewellers, Ramesh Jewellers and New Ramesh Jewellers at Bansanwala Bazaar, Gandhi Chowk and Sarafan Bazaar. The police on Tuesday brought here Gurwinder Singh Samra, chairman, Sikh Sangharsh Committee, who was arrested by the Jalandhar police on charges of hurting religious sentiments a few days back. Samra along with Jasmel Singh, Avtar Singh, Harmej Singh and Tirlochan Singh were produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate, who sent them to police custody for one day. Samra along with hundreds of other members of his organisation demonstrated against Sant Mann Singh Pehowawale last week. |
