2 CRPF men shot dead
Srinagar, February 20 The police here said that two jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed when unidentified militants fired upon a patrol party at Sangam in Anantnag district, about 35 km from here, on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway today. They were identified as Head Constable Verinder Kumar and Constable Vinod Kumar of 155Bn, CRPF. A security force jawan was killed and two others got injured when suspected militants hurled a grenade on a patrol party at Khajgam, Chatru, in Doda district last night. The police today recovered the throat-slit body of Mohammad Ramzan from Koti Nallah in Doda district who had been kidnapped by suspected militants three days ago, the police here said. One person, Khurshid Ahmad Sofi of Viza Wangoora, was injured when fired upon by some unidentified gunman in the Kreeri area of Baramula district. |

Jammu, February 20 He was received by Lieut-Gen T.K. Sapru, General Officer Commanding, 16 Corps. General Santoso was accompanied by a 15-member delegation, including the Assistant Chief of Staff for Security, Major-Gen Tono Suratman, and the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Major-Gen Iwan Ridwan Sulandjana. General Santoso had discussions with General T.K. Sapru on various security aspects of mutual interest to both countries. |
Rights panel orders probe into custodial death
Jammu, February 20 The Commission's suo motu cognizance of the matter has come close on the heels of the suspension and arrest of four police personnel following the incident and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's order for an inquiry into the matter by the Additional Development Commissioner of Jammu, who has been asked to submit his report within a week. The natives of Mandal Phalian and nearby villages had clashed with the cops outside Satwari police station following the death of Tarsem Lal on Saturday last in which a police vehicle was also burnt and Satwari police station was ransacked. The police had fired several rounds in the air to disperse villagers who were protesting against the killing of a youth who was picked up by cops for questioning on Monday morning and died allegedly due to beating by the cops at Mandal Phalian police post under the jurisdiction of Satwari police station. The state administration had also announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the family of the deceased, besides a “routine” magisterial inquiry. |
Srinagar woman among Samjhauta casualties
Srinagar,February 20 A resident of Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar, Mrs Yasmeen Qureshi, 50, was given a send-off off by her husband Mohammad Maqbool at the Delhi’s railway station on Sunday night. The children of the deceased, a son and two daughters, are settled in Lahore. Mohammad Maqbool’s father and other relatives migrated to Pakistan in 1947. His mother was not allowed to do so. His brother Farooq Ahmad later settled in Pakistan. The two brothers got their children married into each other’s family and settled in Lahore. Yasmeen’s journey to see her grandchildren ended in her death in the explosions that rocked Samjhauta Express on Sunday night. — TNS |
