Panipat, February 18
Waterlogging has wiped out the wheat crop in thousands of acres inflicting losses of more than Rs 15 crore to farmers of Matlauda block. More than 10,000 acres of land was submerged under water up to 6 inches for the last eight days. There were no chances that the water would recede soon.

The damage to the crop of wheat could be 100 per cent in these conditions, apprehended Mr Manjit Singh Nain, Deputy Director, Agriculture, Panipat.

In this region of the district hailstones pelted the crops last Sunday followed by downpour, which resulted in the water logging of more than 12,000 acres of land. The crops standing in the villages of Rair Kalan, Dharam Garh, Shera, Kavi, Ahmedpur Majra, Joshi, Nara, Urlana Kalan and Urlana Khurd in Matlauda block and Seenkh and Pathri villages near Israna were badly hit due to water logging. The crops in villages of Atawla, Kurana and Chhichhrana were also affected.

However, some farmers were trying to drain out the water from their fields but there was not much scope for remedial measures as whole area was submerged under water.

“I have lost the crop in 35 acres as water has not receded for the last one week,” rued Ram Singh of Kavi village.

“I was expecting a good crop and sowed wheat in 50 acres but everything has been washed away in the rains,” said Raghbitr of Rair Kalan.

The earth is hard in this region and takes time to absorb the water, said Mr Nain. Moreover, the underground water in the region was not good for irrigation. So where the underground water level was high there farmers had to take steps to avoid it in their fields. This was another factor due to which the water was not receding, added the Deputy Director, Agriculture, Panipat.

Rebate for solar water heater users
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, February 18
To motivate people to use non-conventional energy and save electricity, the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has decided to provide rebate on domestic electricity bills at the rate of Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 300 per month to users of solar water heaters of 100 LPD, 200 LPD and 300 LPD capacity, respectively.

A spokesman said here today that the rebate would be available with effect from the date of installation of solar water heater and would be available for three years.

The rebate, the spokesman added, would be available to the users of solar water heating systems approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards or the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.

To get the benefit of the rebate, the applicant would be required to submit a joint report of commissioning of the system signed by the user, supplier and project officer concerned of the Integrated Rural Energy Programme.

The rebate would be discontinued if the system got non-operational.

The spokesman said this was one of the measures of the demand side management being taken by DHBVN.

The demand side management had the potential to address needs of filling the gap between demand and supply of electricity and providing uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers at reduced rates, he added.

Peak demand hours in Haryana were from 5 am to 9 am and from 6 pm to 10 pm.

During winter, the peak of load curve was higher during the morning.

Domestic use of electricity was the main factor causing exordinary rise in load curve.

To reduce the peaking of load curve, the strategic conservation to reduce end consumption was considered the best approach to load management.

Lighting in domestic and commercial sectors represented a large portion of electricity consumption and contributed a large amount to the evening and morning peak load.

Most households and commercial institutes used incandescent lamps and low-efficiency fluorescent tubelights for lighting.

Promotion of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and efficient fluorescent tubelights with electronic ballast could contribute significantly in the reduction of electricity consumption and lowering peak demands.

The DHBVN had provided its consumers with a scheme to provide CFL bulbs at low rates from the DHBVN’s customer care centres.

Under this scheme, customers would be offered 11 watt, 15 watt and 20 watt CFL bulbs at Rs 67.50, Rs 75 and Rs 100 per piece, respectively, while a T-8-36 watt tube would be offered at Rs 32 per piece.

Thereafter, the miscreants locked Ms Rita and her two children in a room and started searching the house.
