Fake killings: Another body exhumed

Srinagar, February 2
The police today fire shots in the air and teargas shells to prevent an agitated crowd from entering a graveyard at Ganderbal where a special investigation team (SIT) of the Jammu and Kashmir police had gone to exhume a body of a missing person.

As the SIT headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmad reached Saloora village in Ganderbal area, 27 km from here, hundreds of people tried to break the security cordon around the graveyard, official sources said.

The team had gone to Saloora to exhume the body believed to be that of Nazir Ahmad Deki, a resident of the Kokernag area in Anantnag district, who has been missing since February last year and suspected to be killed in a fake encounter.

The sources said as the police tried to prevent them from moving into the graveyard, the agitated mob pelted them with stones.

The police retaliated by carrying out baton charge and later resorting to firing tear smoke shells.

However, the crowd refused to give in and continued to shout slogans against those police personnel who have allegedly killed innocent civilians, the sources said.

Jammu, February 2
The state government has decided to introduce voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) in various loss-making public sector units (PSUs) like the J&K State Financial Corporation (SFC), which registered a loss of Rs 65 crore in the last fiscal owing to poor recoveries.

Besides VRS, other measures to be taken up by the government to “revive” the corporation would be reduction of non-performing assets (NPAs) for which a settlement scheme has been put in place, raising funds from the market at cheaper rates and making entry into areas like personal loans or heavy purchasing loans, state Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Qarra said while chairing the annual general meeting of the SFC shareholders this evening.

“It is not only for the SFC but we are adopting VRS scheme in other PSUs as well which are either totally defunct or partially running in losses,” he said.
