Sachin, Jaffer hit tons
Mumbai, February 2 Resting on the duo’s efforts, Mumbai recovered from a poor start to end the day at 281 for five with Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nair at the crease. Turning out for Mumbai after a lengthy gap, Tendulkar, who was a picture of confidence and was extremely sure of his footwork, came up with an aggressive 105 studded with 19 boundaries. Adopting a different approach but in an assured manner, Jaffer (112) grafted his way as he stitched a valuable 187-run partnership for the third wicket with Tendulkar to put Mumbai in a healthy position. However, Bengal came back pretty well in the final session, where they took two wickets and denied the home side from completely seizing the initiative. Ranadeb Bose justified his captain Deep Dasgupta’s decision to bowl with two early wickets in an impressive spell. Following the early success and with the wicket having something for the bowlers, Bengal hoped to make further dent in the hosts’ batting line-up. However, after seeing off the threat of Bose and having gauged the pace and bounce of the wicket, Tendulkar and Jaffer played with authority as the innings progressed. Not afraid to play on the up, Tendulkar was fluent with his drives down the ground during his 113-ball knock. At the other end, Jaffer reached his 50 of 125 balls, which included eight boundaries. When Jaffer was on 61, Sourav Ganguly induced an outside edge, which was pouched by wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta but the umpire ruled it a no-ball. Tendulkar, in the meantime, reached his 100, the second 50 coming in just 35 balls. He finally fell just before tea for 105, while trying to slog sweep Lahiri. He was caught by Laxmi Ratan Shukla at the deep-midwicket fence. At that stage, Mumbai were 201 for three. This brought skipper Amol Muzumdar to the crease, with Jaffer nearing his century. However, the Bengal bowlers were able to exert some pressure on both Mumbai batsmen. Muzumdar looked out of sorts and was beaten time and again by Ganguly, who bowled an inspired spell from either side. Jaffer finally reached his century of 229 balls, inclusive of 13 boundaries. But like Tendulkar, he too got out soon after being caught at forward short-leg by Arindam Das off spinner Lahiri for 112 with the score on 268. In the next over, Muzumdar’s scratchy innings came to an end when he was trapped leg before by Ganguly for 31 with Mumbai still on 268. Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nair then survived some testing period before taking Mumbai to close of play without further loss of wickets. Earlier, Mumbai in a surprise move, left out left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni, deciding to go in with a four-pronged pace attack with Ramesh Powar as the lone spinner. Scoreboard

Sehwag, Munaf may be recalled
Mumbai, February 2 The Delhi swashbuckler was not considered for the entire four-match rubber against the West Indies won by India 3-1. But with the World Cup squad to be chosen on February 12, the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka would be the last few chances he would get to impress the selectors and gain a berth for the mega event in March-April. Sehwag was not among the runs in both forms of the game on the dismal tour of South Africa, which ended with India losing the one-day series 0-4 and the Test rubber 1-2 to the hosts and selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar said he needed to go back to the nets and sort out his problems. With another out-of-form player Irfan Pathan having been recalled for the last match against the West Indies in his hometown Baroda, logic dictates that Sehwag a proven performer at the international level too should be given a chance to press his claims for a berth in the World Cup team, according to selection committee sources. Another player who’s likely to get a call-up if he’s declared fully fit by Anant Joshi, Cricket Board’s physician, is speedster Munaf Patel. Patel broke down with an ankle injury at the start of the South Africa tour and was virtually a spectator till he was passed fit for the final Test at Cape Town where he bowled below-par and looked far from fit. According to indications the team selected for the two ties would give an indication of the final 15 for the World
Cup. — PTI |
Mumbai, February 2 Off-spinner Muralitharan and left-arm pace bowler Vaas, Lanka’s most successful bowlers in one-dayers over more than a decade, are carrying niggles and have been rested by the Lankan selectors ahead of the March-April World Cup in the West Indies. The side touring India, which is to play matches at Kolkata, Rajkot (Feb 11), Goa (Feb 14) and Vishakapatnam (Feb 17), includes recalled tall left-arm pacer Nuwan Zoysa, leg-spinner-cum-lower order batsman Upul Chandana, middle order batsman Russel Arnold and medium pacer Nuwan Kulasekera. The series provides the last chance for both Lanka and hosts India to fine-tune for the World Cup, besides affording the islanders a chance to avenge their 1-6 defeat in the previous series the two sides had contested last season here. The squad: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul Tharanga, Marvan Atapattu, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Russel Arnold, Upul Chandana, Farveez Maharoof, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Malinga Bandara, Nuwan Zoysa and Nuwan Kulasekera. — PTI |
England re-Joyce at long last
Sydney, February 2 The embattled tourists crushed the Australians by 92 runs. Led by a defiant maiden century from man-of-the-match Ed Joyce and inspired bowling from Liam Plunkett, England posted their highest total of the tri-series with 292 for seven off their 50 overs and claimed a vital bonus point after Australia finished on 200 for nine off 38.5 overs. England joined New Zealand on nine points in the standings and if they can beat the Kiwis in Brisbane next Tuesday they will defy the odds and take on the Australians in the three-match final, starting on February 9. SA pound Pakistan Johannesburg, February 2 Captain Smith blazed his way to 71 not out off just 40 balls, while partner Bosman cruised to 53 not out in 32 deliveries. Smith struck four sixes in his innings, as well as nine fours, more boundaries than the entire Pakistan team managed, while Bosman hit five fours and two sixes. Earlier, Alfonso Thomas took three wickets on his first appearance for South Africa as Pakistan wilted after being sent in to bat. A shower about an hour before play did not delay the start, but there was a 20-minute interruption when the rain returned midway through Pakistan’s innings. — Reuters |

Dubai, February 2 Randhawa, who finished tied third yesterday, was lying at tied ninth after completing 12 holes with six holes left when darkness fell. Earlier, play was halted for over two hours due to a thunderstorm at the Emirates Golf Club. The 34-year-old Randhawa sank in three birdies against one bogey. Jeev started in the worst possible way, dropping a shot on the very first hole before play was halted with two more holes to complete. He was tied 35th along with 17 others at the end of the day. The third Indian in the fray, Kahlon, carded a poor one-over 73 to miss the cut. Briton Ross Fisher leads the field on 14-under after a second successive seven-under 65. Three-time champion Ernie Els was second on 12-under with four holes left when darkness fell. Defending champion Tiger Woods (67) was unable to mount a sustained challenge as he finished one shot further back on nine-under, reeling off eight pars and a solitary birdie on the eighth. Digvijay hangs on
Manila: Digvijay Singh’s disappointing three bogeys for a par-72 score halted his progress at the top of the leaderboard but he still managed to hold on to his seventh spot after the second round of the $ 3,00,000 Philippines Open here on Friday. Digvijay’s three birdies on the third, fourth and the 16th holes helped him stay in the hunt for a top-three finish with a total score of three-under 141. Uttam Singh Mundy, who was languishing on the 75th spot yesterday, made rapid strides, reeling in four birdies against two bogeys for a two-under 70 score to finish tied 36th along with compatriot Gurbaaz Maan. Gurbaaz, however could not make most of a good first round outing as he slipped from 12th to the 36th spot. Both Mundy and Gurbaaz finished with a score of one-over 145 after the two rounds. The only other Indian in contention, Arjun Singh, was lucky to make the cut, turning in a poor two-over 74 to be tied 65th at the end of a not-so-good day with as many as five Indians failing to make the cut. China’s Liang
Wen-chong topped the charts with a seven-under 137 score, followed by Neven Basic of Australia and the Philippines’ Benjie Magada at second and third spots, respectively. Chopra tied 8th
Scottsdale (USA): Daniel Chopra started his campaign at the FBR Open in style with a five-under 66 that put him in tied eighth place, just two off the lead after a chilly and cold day at Scottsdale’s 7,216-yard layout.

Boxers blaze golden trail
New Delhi, February 2 India won three of the four medals in the sub-junior section, three of the six in the junior section and three of the six in the senior category. In the sub-junior category, the Indian boxers recorded their title wins through RSC (referee stopped the contest) verdicts. Balvinder stopped Nurshant Pazziyev of Turkmenistan in the second round of the 60kg bout while Anil Kumar made mincemeat of Mousa Jaffar of Iraq in the 66kg title round, with a second round RSC. In the 70kg, Sunil Olla of India stopped Meret Myrat Sarbazav of Turkmenistan in the second round. But the slug fest in the junior section was very close and intense though India's Suresh was unlucky to lose his 69kg clash against Baimalov Husan of Kazakhastan on points, after putting up a brave fight. Suresh, after opening up a big lead, slumped in the middle round for his opponent to catch up and tie the score at 21-21, and the hand-score by line judges gave the verdict in favour of Baimalov. In the 75kg, Sitender of India squandered an early lead to allow Seidalliyev of Kazakhastan to catch up and tie the score at 23-23, but he had done enough in the initial rounds to earn the appreciation of the judges and emerge the This win amply compensated for the loss of Amit in the 64kg against Niamedshayem of Turkiministan earlier in the evening. Parmoj added the 81kg gold after Tulkenov Mukan of Kazakhastan was disqualified in the fourth round while Baljeet lost the 91 plus kg bout against Davletov of Kazakhastan on points. In an all-India clash, Naresh scored a second round RSC verdict against Sunny Tokas in the 91kg final. |

AITA chief slams Bopanna
New Delhi, February 2 The AITA president said for a player of Bopanna’s standing, “national duty should come first and personal rankings can follow.” Bopanna apparently pulled out of the Asia Oceania Group I tie in Uzbekistan to improve his doubles rankings, instead of playing in the ITF Futures in India in preparation for the Davis Cup encounter. Mr Sinha said as far as Mahesh Bhupathi’s decision not to play the zonal round of the Davis Cup tie was concerned, it had been taken after “full consultation with the AITA Executive vice-president and secretary-general Anil Khanna, who had agreed that it would be appropriate to take a young team for the zonal matches consisting of at least three singles players with Leander Paes as the playing captain.” “This decision was taken in September, 2006, well before the Doha Asian Games,” Mr Sinha added. |
