2 killed in Doda tunnel collapse Jammu, January 29 According to the police, the tunnel collapsed at around 2 a.m. resulting in flooding of the area. Initial reports said eight labourers were missing. However, they were traced in the tunnel later. The deceased have been identified as Om Prakash and Sahid Hussain. The injured have been rushed to the hospital. The project is being constructed by the

Srinagar, January 29 The government has also ordered the exhumation of the body of the carpenter and carrying out of DNA tests tomorrow. The carpenter had gone missing on December 8 when he had been asked by a policeman to reach Batamaloo here. According to his family, they had paid a sum of Rs 75,000 in March last year to constable Farooq Ahmad to get a government job for Padder. This followed an assurance from the government to provide a job to one of the family members against the use of their farmland for the construction of a water tank in their village. Constable Farooq Ahmad, according to the family members, asked Abdul Rahman Padder and Ahmadullah Wani to meet him at Batamaloo on December 8 in this connection. While Ahmadullah returned after the meeting, Abdul Rahman failed to reach his workplace even after five days, leading to search for him by the family. On December 9, the police claimed to killing a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, Mohammad Ibrahim, alias Abu Hafeez, at Waskoora, Ganderbal, near here. Reports, however, said the 35-year-old carpenter from Larnoo Kokernag had been killed in a fake encounter and later buried at Batapopra, Sumbal. Official sources said the exhumation of the body and sample for DNA test would be taken in case of availability of requisite teams tomorrow. Two policemen - Assistant Sub-Inspector Farooq Ahmad Gudoo and constable Farooq Ahmad Paddar - of the Jammu and Kashmir Police posted in District Police Line, Srinagar, have already been arrested in this connection. |
Oppn takes govt to task on power crisis Jammu, January 29 “The government has failed to add a single megawatt of power since its inception,” Leader of the Opposition A R Rathar of the National Conference said during a discussion on the Demands for Grants to the states Power Ministry in the Assembly session. The states estimated hydel potential was 20,000 megawatt, Mr Rathar said the state had so far been able to generate just 1481 mw, while several of its mega hydel projects were still in pipeline or halted in between. “The power consumption by people of J and K stood at 0.9 per cent share out of the total power consumption by various states in the country,” he said. Panthers Party’s Harshdev Singh stated 25 per cent of the state’s rural areas were without electricity and many areas covered under electrification were getting very low voltage. Independent MLA Abdul Majid Wani from Doda said there were 44 villages without electricity in his constituency, while another NC legislator Mubarak Gul said the government was not replying to several queries raised in the House concerning the power sector. Replying to the discussion, Power Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora said the state was expecting transfer of 390 MW Dul Hasti and 1000 MW Pukal Dul Power Projects from the Union government to Jammu and Kashmir state as compensation in lieu of the disadvantageous position the state has been put to due to the Indus Water Treaty. |

2 soldiers killed in gunbattle
Jammu, January 29 According to a senior Army officer, the gunbattle started last evening when a joint team of the Army and the Special Task Force (STF) of the police launched an operation in the Kidur area, 28 km east of Kishtwar in Doda district after getting information about the presence of top militants. Two STF personnel, including a special police officer (SPO), were injured. An STF personnel received a bullet injury near his right eye. There was no loss reported from the militants' side. The security cordon to catch the militants had been widened, the officer said. Senior military officers and the SP (Operations), Kishtwar, have rushed to the spot. |
Gang of ‘fake’ terrorists busted
Jammu, January 29 A group of six masked youths, armed with toy guns pretending to be terrorists, barged into the house of an Army jawan, Bagh Hussain, in the Krishnaghati area of Poonch district last night. The Army jawan and his neighbours caught the leader of the gang who has been identified as Jasvir Singh.

Insurance Co. told to pay relief to doc
Jammu, January 29 Commission president Justice G.D. Sharma and member Khalid Hussain ordered the company to pay the claim to Dr Vishwamitter Soodan, who had insured himself under the Doctors’ Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme. The commission, while passing strictures, also directed the insurance company to pay the interest at the rate of 6 per cent to the doctor in case the award along with a sum of Rs 2,000 was not paid within two months. Following a compromise reached in the Supreme Court, the doctor had paid Rs 1.7 lakh to Mr Baru. However, the insurance company refused to pay the claim of the doctor under the indemnity scheme. |
