Capital to be
self-reliant in power: CM
New Delhi, January 29 She said the Delhi Government was committed to providing quality services in the power sector to the people of Delhi for which the government had implemented reforms in the power sector, which resulted in tremendous improvement in the power sector. The demand of power had increased from 2500-2800 to 3800MW during the past three to four years. It may increase to 7500 MW before Commonwealth Games 2010. However, she expressed the hope that after commissioning of the Bawana and Pragati Power Project-II, the 1500 MW project in Haryana and two NTPC projects of 490 MW, power supply in Delhi would be sufficient to meet the requirements. The Chief Minister also said the Public Grievance Cell would handle all kinds of power related grievances of consumers and forward them to the respective discoms for time-bound redressal. A few selected grievances would be monitored by the Department of Power. Though all three discoms had their own set-up to redress the consumer grievances, this cell would be an additional and supplementary forum to provide relief to consumers. Power Minister Haroon Yusuf said keeping in view the numerous problems being faced by the consumers, the Department of Power had established the Public Grievance Cell. The cell would actively coordinate with discoms to provide relief to the consumers. Justice R. C. Chopra, a retired judge of the high court, had been appointed to head this cell. Besides supportive staff, Mr V.K. Kapoor, a technical officer of the rank of Chief Engineer, had also been appointed. He said the complaints could be lodged through writing a letter to the Public Grievance Cell or dialling toll free no 1800 112222. |

10-yr-old Ayushree performs Arangetram
New Delhi, January 29 Generally, the student must have around 10 years of training to perform the Arangetram, something that Ayushree has proved herself being capable of within just five years of training in the ancient and revered form of Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of her guru, Marie Elangovan, a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer of Canadian origin. Ayushree’s confidence and exuberance onstage in performing the intricate Bharatanayam mudras and steps reflected her dedication, hard work and the years of meticulous training imparted by her teacher. Ayushree has revived the tradition of achieving Arangetram before the age of 12. Ayushree said, “It has been a dream come true for me to have been able to deliver up to the expectations of my gurus, parents and friends. I would like to thank them all for their everlasting support and encouragement. I hope that my performance motivates many other youngsters to take up this sacred and exciting art as their interest.”The audience, which included former CBI Director Kaarthikeyan as the chief guest, was mesmerised by her flawless Bharatanatyam Arangetram recital as she displayed her finesse over the nine traditional Arangetram pieces. Ayushree’s vibrant performance at the India International Centre today won a standing ovation as almost everyone watched with amazement her skill, stamina and immersion in the spirit of the dance, clearly showing why we associate youth with hope and promise for the future. Arangetram is a graduation performance in Bharatanatyam that is the part of the traditional format — the Margam (path). It reflects the different stages of the dancer’s consciousness. In Tamil, Aranga means a raised stage and etram means climbing. It is also called as Rangapravesha in Kannada where Ranga means stage and pravesha means enter. Arangetram is a test both for the shishya (student) as well as the guru (teacher) since the guru’s knowledge and the shishya’s talent are judged by the audience. In essence, the student is allowed to perform an Arangetram only when the guru feels the shishya is capable and talented enough. |

Market, shops sealed in Faridabad colonies
Faridabad, January 29 The next date in the court is February 9. The administration has been directed to close down the illegal market and shops operating from the residential areas of these sectors in response to a PIL filed in the court. A case of contempt of court had been filed by the authorities against several shopkeepers after the shops were reopened. The authorities concerned had appointed four senior officers of HCS rank as Duty Magistrates and several teams of the officials and employees of the MCF were set up to do the work of sealing today in the market and colonies. The teams were asked to report at one spot around 6 this morning and they were accompanied by a large number of policemen deputed to take care of the law and order situation. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Brijender Singh, had imposed Section 144 in the area to keep a check on any untoward development. It may be recalled that the market functioning in the Housing Board colonies of Sector 7 and 10 had been existing for the past few decades. While a majority of the shopkeepers in the 7-10 market here closed down themselves by constructing walls before the shutters, the administration has put seals on the shops this time, claimed an official. While it is claimed that this market has been in violation of the Zoning Plan, a move has been made by the shopkeepers’ association to get it regularized in the past few years. A demand in this regard was also put up before the Chief Minister. But, according to experts, since the matter has been pending in the High Court, any decision of the state government regarding the permission to allow shops and commercial activities from the residential area could have wider ramifications and the state government is required to come out with a proper policy and a master plan. According to the MCF Commissioner, Mr Mahtab Singh, over 234 shops in Sectors 7 and 10 and 34 shops in Sectors 22 and 23 were sealed today. He said strict legal action would be initiated against those who tried to break the seal again and said that no violation would be tolerated in this connection. However, residents of various sectors, including Sector 10 here, have expressed concern over the move regretting that they would have to suffer in absence of any proper market in their locality. “The government should immediately take steps to ensure opening of a market in Sector 10 for the convenience of the people here,” said a resident of this sector. He said land measuring over 11 acres had been lying vacant in Sector 10 (DLF) and this could well serve the purpose. |

Residents of ‘unauthorised’ colony cry for relief
Gurgaon, January 29 They have submitted a representation to the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, urging for diversion of the route of the proposed road so that the houses falling in the area are not affected. The Master Plan provides for 210 meter ‘peripheral’ road which would connect Gurgaon to Dwarka in Delhi, providing one more road connectivity between this city and the national capital. In such a case, 150 houses will have to be wiped off as they fall on the designated route map. The colony was floated by a realtor, obviously with the collusion of the higher-ups in the government more than 15 years back. Plots ranging from 100 sq meters to 1,000 sq meters were carved out, and high class professionals, retired government functionaries from various disciplines purchased plots in it. With a number of well-heeled persons, their friends and relatives making investments by way of purchasing plots, the administration under successive governments turned a blind eye to the sleazy development of unauthorised constructions. In fact, the land on which the colony stand is still in the category of agriculture land. About two phases of the colony have been constructed, and vested interests have been angling to get the remaining portion of the colony developed. Almost all the plots in colony have been sold by the realtor. The Residents Welfare Association of the colony, presently headed by a retired colonel, says that a good number of residents are retired defence personnel and migrated people from the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir. An office-bearer of the Resident Welfare, Major (retd) I.S.Jakhar said that the residents have been provided with a no-objection certificate from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon and Tehsildar to construct houses on the plots in the colony. Besides, the residents have telephone, electricity and other facilities like ration cards. |
