Jalandhar, January 20
Credentials like “mature and loyal worker” have not brought happy news to a number of ticket aspirants here in both the Congress and the BJP.

Mr Anil Dutta, vocal and firebrand, has been denied ticket from the Jalandhar (Central) constituency with the Congress high command picking up Mr Tejinder Singh Bittu, Chairman, Jalandhar Improvement Trust, as its candidate for the coming Assembly elections.

“The denial of the ticket has created a lot of heartburn among party workers and leaders. We have sent a petition to the Congress chief, Ms Sonia Gandhi, to review the allotment of ticket to Mr Bittu,” Mr Dutta said today.

He said the petition sought the review of ticket allocation for five seats, including Fatehgarh Churian, Jalandhar (Central), Srihargobindpur and Patti.

But he remained tightlipped over the question whether he would contest as an independent or quit the party.

“I would make my position clear only after the high command’s decision,” he added.

Another sulking Congress ticket aspirant from Jalandhar (Central), Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, a former legislator, blamed the Chief Minister for “opposing” his candidature.

“Of course, it is the money power,” he alleged. He has also signed the petition sent by Mr Dutta along with other local leaders.

The former legislator, who has been with the Congress for four decades, is known for his bold stand on various issues.

Peeved over the denial of the BJP ticket from Jalandhar (South), Mr Vijay Sampla, general secretary, BJP, Punjab unit, said certain “confidants” in the party played spoilsport in his case.

Without naming anyone, he said: “I was paid reward for my hard work.” However, he clarified that he was still loyal to the party. Insiders in the party said he was used to woo the Dalit vote bank.

“It is election time and like migratory birds, the leaders are switching loyalties in search of ‘wealthier’ offers.

Till the withdrawal of nomination papers, political migration will continue to add colour and spice in the politics,” remarked a political analyst.

The ruling Congress and the SAD-BJP combine have one thing in common, violation of the model code of conduct.

Almost no political party is lagging behind in violating the code by putting up banners and buntings on public places and tying party flags and buntings with electric and telecom poles. During a round of the city today, The Tribune team found that the main political parties, including the Congress, the SAD and the BJP, are ahead of others in defacing public places.

The buntings of the SAD were seen tying with poles at Golden Avenue falling under the Jalandhar Cantonment constituency from where its candidate Mr Jagbir Brar is trying his luck. Interestingly, the loudspeakers for the SAD public meeting were tied with poles at the same place.

On the other hand, a banner of the Congress candidate from Jalandhar (South), Mr Mohinder Singh Kaypee, was put up on a road at New Jawahar Nagar.

Same was the case for the Congress and the BJP in the Jalandhar (North) constituency. While the flags and buntings were fixed with the electric and telecom poles on the road in front of Janj Ghar at Deen Dayal Upadaya Nagar, where BJP candidate Mr Krishan Dev Bhandari has set up its election office.

Similarly, Congress flags and buntings were attached with electric and telecom poles in Gopal Nagar locality. Congress candidate Avtar Henry has been refielded from the Jalandhar (North) seat.

When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr A. Venu Prasad, said the banners and buntings were being removed from public places and from poles continuously.

It may be recalled that over 300 persons belonging to Valmiki community gheraoed Nakodar police station and broke the gate and vases lying in the thana on Friday night in protest against the `desecration’ by the police of Nishan Sahib installed on Behram Panchayat land adjacent to a Valmiki Ashram in Rahimpur village.
