The grenade, however, missed the target and exploded in the nearby compound of Qazi Nooruddin’s house at about 12:15 p.m., about 30 meters away from the Mirwaiz house. No loss of life or injury to any one was caused as a result of the explosion, the police said. Police guards posted at the residence of Mirwaiz house fired in the air after the explosion took place. Cordon and search operations were launched around the area soon after the incident to nab those responsible for the attack. Tension gripped Nowhatta around Jamia Masjid, stronghold of the Mirwaiz, and other areas of the interior city leading to closure of shops and disruption in movement of traffic in some areas. Some shops and business establishments were also closed in central Lal Chowk and other areas of the city following the incident coupled with rumours. Protests were held in the downtown city against the attack. Mirwaiz, who is heading a delegation of the Hurriyat Conference to visit Pakistan from Wednesday for talks with the leadership there, was not present in his house at the time of the explosion. The delegation after meeting some prominent leaders and migrants left Jammu for New Delhi today and is expected to visit Islamabad on Wednesday. The APHC leaders have expressed willingness to meet the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, prior to leaving for Islamabad and will do so in case of a formal invitation from the Centre. The three-member delegation comprising Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat and Bilal Gani Lone had earlier decided to leave for Islamabad on January 18 after meeting the Prime Minister. The moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference is at loggerheads with the hardline faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani on the ongoing dialogue process and Mirwaiz support for talks. Geelani has called for a strike against the India-Pak-Hurriyat talks here on Wednesday. Ikhwan leader shot dead

Oppn walks out over hill council
Jammu, January 15 The resolution was moved by Syed Mushtaq Bukhari (NC). NC members raised slogans against the government for rejecting the "genuine" demand. Thakur Puran Singh, who represents the Budhal constituency of Rajouri, also joined the opposition members in the walk-out. The NC members pointed out that special efforts were required for development of the two border districts that had suffered due to terrorism. They said hardly any development had been done in these districts. They demanded that a hill development council on the lines of Leh and Kargil should be established for the area. They were not satisfied with the reply of the government that hill development councils had been established in the two districts of Ladakh as the area remained cut off for about six months due to snow. Noisy scenes were witnessed in the House during the question hour when NC members accused the coalition government of protecting certain tainted ministers. A senior NC member, Mr Sharifuddin Shariq, alleged that a minister was engaged in land grabbing. He pointed out that PDP member Ghulam Hassan Khan had named a minister for being involved in grabbing of forest land. Mr Taj Mohiuddin, Minister for Consumer Affairs, denied the allegation. |
