Hospital holds mock drill in disaster management
Kuldip Bhatia

Ludhiana, December 29
A mock drill in disaster management was organised by the Accident and Trauma Department of SPS Apollo Hospital here last evening.
Dr S.P. Singh, COO of the hospital, told mediapersons that the focus of the exercise was to track the patient movement, surge capacity (how well can the hospital handle an influx of patients), allocation of resources and coordination with various agencies in case of a disaster. He expressed satisfaction over the response of the entire staff.

“Such a disaster generally leads to a mass-casualty situation (MCS), which means a situation in which there are more casualties than the system is able to manage at a certain moment. In other words, the demand for medical care is greater than the supplies available. An MCS usually is short in duration and generally resolves itself. Such situations can occur anywhere, but usually relate to victims with traumatic injuries. Therefore, to minimise the risks to patients during an MCS, planning is essential,” he said.

According to Dr Singh, each department within the hospital had different plans as to their reaction and every staff member had different responsibilities at the time of a disaster. The mock drill helped organisations define their roles amongst themselves more clearly and prevent duplication of work. “If an injured person has received first aid, we do not want him to wait in line at another hospital for the same treatment. We want to minimise mix-ups that are likely to happen."

He claimed that on the basis of its trained manpower, as also the food and supply stockpiles, the hospital could cope efficiently with such eventualities. “We shall be organising such full-scale drills every second year during which readiness level of different sections and the continuity of the flow of care will be tested,” he added.

Mr Jugdeip Singh, director of the hospital, said the institute also planned to approach schools and colleges in the area to help them in disaster preparedness and management.

Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, December 29
More than 1,000 persons from Lalton and several nearby villages were examined at a dental check-up camp at Baba Inder Singh Memorial Dispensary in Lalton Khurd village on the Ferozepore road yesterday.

People availed themselves of the facilities like scaling, temporary filling and tooth extraction. The camp was organised by Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College and Hospital.

A team of senior dental surgeons and supporting staff, headed by Dr Pawan Arora, Professor and Head of the Department of Community Dentistry at BJS Dental College and Hospital, conducted the camp.

Mr Piara Singh, managing director of the institution, along with Dr Vivek Saggar, vice-principal, inaugurated the camp. Mr Satinderpal Singh, chairman of the Baba Inder Singh Memorial Trust, Lalton Khurd, Mr Balwant Singh Grewal and Ms Manjit Kaur Grewal, NRIs, were also present on the occasion.

The camp began with Dr Vivek Saggar delivering a talk on dental care. A slide show was also organised to educate the rural masses about common dental ailments, especially tooth decay and gum diseases. He said these diseases were the result of change in dietary habits, lack of oral hygiene routine and periodical dental check-ups.

Dr H.S Dhooria, Professor, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, spoke about oral cancer. He said such cases were on the rise due to rampant use of tobacco, pan masala and other such things.

The team of dental surgeons and paramedical staff provided comprehensive diagnosis with the help of "intra-oral" camera where a patient could actually see the status of his oral hygiene on a TV screen with the help of a hand-held camera.

Every patient was given a "patient card" which was basically a report summary of the diagnosed problem and the recommended treatment plan.

Minor treatment was made available on the spot. Free medicines and toothpaste tubes were given to all those who attended the camp.
