Teachers invited for talks
Tribune News Service

Phagwara, December 13
The DPI (Schools), Ms Charanjit Kaur Atwal, has invited representatives of the Punjab Aided-School Teachers and Employees Union (Progressive Front), headed by Mr Upjit Singh Brar, for talks on December 15 in Chandigarh.

Stating this, union leader H.M. Bilga said today that their major demands included pension and pay parity. Meanwhile, the teachers’ stir today entered the ninth day.

Nawanshahr: Mr Bhupinder Pal Singh, general secretary of the district unit of Punjab State Aided School Teachers and Other Employees Union, in a press statement here on Wednesday, criticised the government for harassing the employees of aided schools, especially lady teachers, by depriving them of the basic civic amenities in the Nabha Jail.

The teachers of the privately managed government aided schools have been courting arrest under their on-going “Jail Bharo Agitation” to press for the restoration of retirement benefits, which were withdrawn by the government in 1993.

Mr Bhupinder Pal Singh alleged that the teachers had been given only two blankets each in cells that san window panes. Besides, the stinking toilets and leaking bathrooms were adding to their hassles, he added.

He further criticised the government for adopting dilly-dallying attitude on the long-pending genuine demand of the teachers.

The Chief Minister accepted the demand of the restoration of retirement benefits at a Patiala rally a few months ago, but now he had set up the Bhattal Committee to look into the matter. — OC
