PFA in owl spat

The local chapter of the People for Animals (PFA) is in a spot over its claims of rescuing and releasing a family of barn owls early this week as only four owls were released in the Matterwara forest range while six had been rescued.

Dhanda pronounces himself as SAD candidate

Former chairman of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, has virtually pronounced himself as the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate from Ludhiana (West). Mr Dhanda, who is a strong claimant of the party ticket from the Ludhiana (West) segment, has also gone to the extent of getting his posters pasted across the segment.

The Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, will donate 500 books to the Batalvi Sabhyacharak Kender, Batala, and help set up a Shiv Kumar Batalvi library in Batala soon. Mr Gurbhajan Gill, senior vice-president, Punjabi Sahit Akademi, at a function held in Batala yesterday said Batalvi was a feather in the crown of all Punjabis. He was addressing a gathering of the intellectuals and literary persons.

Employees seek interim relief from January

The Punjab Government's decision to grant interim relief to its employees and pensioners came as a relief to them, however, its date of effect November 1, 2006, has saddened them.

Jagminder booked under Passport Act
Ludhiana, December 9
The city police has booked Jagminder Singh, main accused in the Vikramjit murder case, in another case of cheating and violation of the Indian Passport Act after the recovery of a passport made on duplicate and forged papers during the investigation.

Infant found dead
Ludhiana, December 9
In yet another incident of female infanticide in the city, body of an infant girl was recovered from near Oswal Cancer Hospital this morning. The girl seemed to belong to a Punjabi family.

11 GNIMT students get medals, degrees

The convocation of Punjab Technical University was held in the NIT auditorium, Jalandhar, yesterday. Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Governor of Punjab and Chancellor PTU, was the chief guest. Eleven students from the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT) received gold medals and degrees on the occasion.

Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC) organised a seminar on the "Ideology of Sri Guru Granth Sahib" at A.D. College, Dharamkot, Ferozepore, here today. Dr Ranjit Singh presided over the seminar and Mr Satnam Singh Sallopuri, Director, Youth Services, GGSSC, was the chief guest on this occasion. Mr Satnam Singh Sallopuri said that the ideology of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is based on truth, peace, equality, justice, brotherhood and humility.

In collaboration with the Department of AYUSH , Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, and with the help of gram panchayats of Kukad Majra, Ajnali and Nasrali villages the Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital organised a function to make the people aware about AIDS here today. Sarpanches, panches of nearby villages, mahila mandal, yuvak sangh, teachers of neighbouring schools and students attended the function.

Namdhari XI, PSEB XI, Mukandpur and Friends Club of Roomi won their respective quarterfinals and secured berths in the last four in the boy's section (hockey) on the second day of the 21st annual Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament and Sports Festival being organised by the Sports Club of Jarkhar under the ageis of the Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council here today.
