11 GNIMT students get medals, degrees

Ludhiana, December 9
The convocation of Punjab Technical University was held in the NIT auditorium, Jalandhar, yesterday. Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Governor of Punjab and Chancellor PTU, was the chief guest. Eleven students from the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT) received gold medals and degrees on the occasion.

After the welcome address by Dr S.K.Salwan, Vice-Chancellor, PTU, the name of Ruma Mehta was called amid cheers by the audience as the first student to receive the gold medal and MBA degree. It was followed by the names of Preetanjan Kaur, Anudeep Kaur and Prabhjot Kaur.

MCA student Baldeep Kaur also received her gold medal and degree for standing first in the examination. Aneet Batra was called being next in the merit list.

Preeti Kalsi got gold medal for standing first in BBA, followed by Chanpreet Kaur and Swati Mehta. In BCA, Manish Arora and Preeti Chawla got their degrees.

Dr (Col) H.S. Singha, Director, GNIMT, congratulated the students.

Orientation programme on career building

To meet the challenges of the world, the Malwa Central College of Education for Women organised a two-day orientation programme on career preparation skills here yesterday. The programme was organised by the Adult and Continuing Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Dr Ravinder Kaur was the resource person who told the students how to face the interviews. Ms Mohua Khosla built the confidence of students by giving examples from daily life during the programme. Other dignitaries stressed on curriculum vitae and gave tips to manage time and stress.

On day two, Dr Gurmit Singh explored the world of work to students. He familiarised them with ample opportunities. Ms Navneet Kaur, another expert explained the importance of communication skills, which were needed in career building.

After the workshop, feedback was taken from students. Students felt that there was a need for such informative programmes which enhanced their personalities. Dr Sween, Director, Adult and Continuing Education, PU, Chandigarh gave certificates to all participants.

Seminar on Guru Granth Sahib

Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC) organised a seminar on the "Ideology of Sri Guru Granth Sahib" at A.D. College, Dharamkot, Ferozepore, here today. Dr Ranjit Singh presided over the seminar and Mr Satnam Singh Sallopuri, Director, Youth Services, GGSSC, was the chief guest on this occasion. Mr Satnam Singh Sallopuri said that the ideology of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is based on truth, peace, equality, justice, brotherhood and humility. Guru Granth Sahib does not only comprise the hymns of Sikh Gurus but there are 30 other holy men whose compositions form part of it and get equal respect to those of Gurus.

Among these 30 holy men are princes as well as paupers, the so-called high-caste as well as low-caste people, Hindus as well as Muslims. If there are persons from Punjab to find a place in this unique scripture, there are people from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pardesh ,Madhya Pradesh, etc whose compositions have been included in the this scripture and are given the same reverence as has been shown to the Gurus.

Seven more to contest DBA elections

Ludhiana, December 9
Seven more aspiring contestants have filed their nomination papers staking claim to different posts of the District Bar Associations(DBA). Some candidates also distributed sweets on this occasion. The annual elections of the DBA are scheduled to be held on December 20 at the Courts Complex.

Even on the third day, no one filed in their nominations for the post of the president. The papers for this post may be filed on December 11, the last day for filing in nomination papers.

Mr Shingara Singh Mangat and Mr Vijay Bhatia filed in nominations for the post of vice-president today. Mr Harjot Singh submitted his papers for the post of finance secretary, whereas Mr R.S. Garewal is standing for the post of secretary.

Mr Kulwinder Pal Singh is staking claim to the post of Joint secretary. Earlier, two contestants - Mr Rajan Chand and Ms Anju Sodhi- had filed in papers for the same post. Ms Yogita Mohil and Mr Gaurav Bhandari have filed their nominations for the post of executive members.

Sabyacharak Mela on Dec 17

Amloh, December 9
To give a final touch to the preparations for the sixteenth Sabyacharak Mela on December 17, a meeting of the Punjab Sabyacharak Club, Amloh, was held here today.

The meeting was presided over by its president Roshan Lal Sood. A press note issued by club’s press secretary Raj Paheri stated that this year the function would be dedicated to late Surinder Kaur. Peoples' theatre will perform “Sukhi Khukh” and “Dera” plays at the function. Committees were also constituted in this regard.
