Hizbul militant, soldier killed

Jammu, December 9
Four persons, including a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant, were killed in separate encounters in Udhampur and Poonch districts today.

The police and Army launched a joint operation in Gool area in the early hours and in the subsequent encounter killed Mohammad Sharief, alias Hikmatyar, who was a self-styled Divisional Commander of the HM outfit in the area, Inspector-General of Police, Jammu Zone, SP Vaid, told reporters here this evening.

The slain militant was active since 1993 in the areas of Udhampur and Doda districts and was involved in a number killings, looting and rapes , he said.

His threats had recently forced some families to migrate from Lancha area of Gool tehsil to Ramban, he said, adding he was also closely associated with dreaded militant Billu Gujjar, who was eliminated by the security forces in the recent past.

The IGP said in another encounter that took place at Banola village in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district, an Army jawan and a civilian lost their lives today.

The encounter took place after the security forces were fired upon by ultras from a house belonging to one overground worker of militants at Banola village, he said, adding that the house was also a hideout of one Lashker-e-Toiba commander.

LMVs allowed to move; landslides partially removed
Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 9
Many of the light motor vehicles (LMVs) stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar highway for the past five days were allowed to proceed to their destinations this afternoon as landslides were partially removed from the road by men of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

However, passenger buses and trucks were not allowed to proceed with the debris lying at several places between Ramban and Banihal. Hundreds of tourists and passengers were stranded.

Reports said more than 100 buses and trucks were stranded between Makarkot and Ramban. About 65 vehicles were standing at Panthal.

The BRO personnel have deployed heavy equipment for clearing the landslides, but the overcast sky is worrying the authorities. The trucks and buses may be allowed to go only after the road is cleared.

A large number of trucks laden with rations, essential supplies, cooking gas and petroleum products are stranded en route, thereby causing scarcity, particularly in the valley.

Several stranded tourists have exhausted their money while the government functionaries have failed to reach them.

Winter sports to add to Kashmir charm
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, December 9
Apart from Gulmarg, which is claimed to be the best snow skiing resort, efforts are on to exploit snow slopes of Yusmarg and Pahalgam for winter sports activities in Kashmir valley in the months ahead.

Gulmarg will also be hosting various winter sports events, including National Snowboarding Championship in January next year, in addition to 19 training camps this winter.

"We have good talent in Kashmir and we have the capacity to make Gulmarg as the best winter sports destination of the world," said Mr Farooq Ahmad Shah, who has recently been elected as the president of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir.

Elections to the association were held on November 30, one year after the expiry of the five-year term of the earlier association, elections to which had been last held in 2000.

Other elected members included two senior vice-presidents, Ms Hafeeza Hassan and Mr Gul Mustafa Dev, both internationally acclaimed skiers from the state.

Other elected members were Shabir Ahmad Wani (Kashmir), Noni P Angchuk (Ladakh), Krishan Chand (Jammu), and Ms Gurmeet Kour, Secretary and Sarabjit Singh (Treasurer), apart from 10 other executive members.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr Farooq Ahmad Shah, who is also Director of the Tourism Department of Jammu and Kashmir Government, said the association had a great role to play with the best snow slopes and best quality of snow available in the Kashmir mountains.

He said Gulmarg could become the best ski resorts of the world, as it was cheaper when compared to other destinations of Europe. "We have the best quality slopes and snow in Gulmarg and it is most affordable," Mr Farooq Ahmad Shah said.

He added that the expenses on a trip from England to Gulmarg for skiing would be equivalent to one day’s expenses at any snow ski resort in Europe.

He claimed that one lakh skiirs could be accommodated in Gulmarg in a season, while there was also facility of to and fro movement on daily basis between Srinagar and Gulmarg.

Health of 13 miners on strike deteriorates

Jammu, December 9
The condition of 13 miners who are on hunger strike to demand regularisation of employment for workers in the state-owned Kalakote coal mines in Rajouri is rapidly deteriorating, CITU president Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said here today.

Mr Tarigami expressed concern over the health of the protesting miners who undertook fast-unto-death inside the mine 10 days ago. He said though the authorities had been apprised of their condition, no action had been taken so far.

Though the miners were employed as permanent workers, they are treated as casual labourers in violation of the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947, Mr Tarigami, who is also an MLA and CPM state secretary, stated.

CITU general secretary K.K. Bakshi alleged that the miners had not been given six months' salary and were being denied basic facilities like potable water. He said the state chapter of the CITU fully endorsed the one-day nationwide strike called by the National Trade Unions and the Associations of Employees and Workers on December 14. — PTI
