Windies call the shots on day two
Multan, November 20 Gayle (87) and Ganga (59) posted the first century opening stand for the West Indies in 20 Tests in Pakistan after the home side were bowled out for 357 with paceman Jerome Taylor taking five for 91. Taylor’s second five-wicket haul was bagged with Pakistan losing their last six wickets for 94 runs to the second new ball after resuming on 263 for four in the morning. Gayle and Ganga, who played out the last two sessions, put their team in a rare position of strength with patient half centuries as the bowlers struggled on a flat track. Gayle scored his 26th half century from 101 balls with seven fours and Ganga his eighth from 123 balls with nine fours. Gayle, despite displaying admirable patience, still played some spankimg shots as he closed in on his first century since April, 2005 when he made 317 against South Africa in Antigua. Sourav,
Dalmiya set to patch up?
Kolkata, November 20 None of the past rancour seemed to be there as the seasoned cricket administrator and the left-handed batsman chatted over a cup of tea and Dalmiya expressed confidence that Ganguly would make his way back into the Indian team on the strength of his playing capabilities. “Ganguly will be back into the team by dint of his capability. He will return for sure,” Dalmiya said, while giving a pep talk to the Bengal team ahead of their Ranji Trophy match in Mohali against Punjab from November 23 to 26. Dalmiya had taken the first step himself in breaking the ice when he asked Ganguly to sit next to him and the cricketer smilingly obliged. In a hard-hitting e-mail from London, where he was busy playing county cricket, Ganguly had on July 22 accused the Dalmiya faction of playing with his career. — PTI |

Anand bags Blitz title
New Delhi, November 20 Anand scored a whopping 23 points out of a possible 34 and won 11 out of 17 mini-matches to win the strongest Blitz tournament in the history of the game. The Indian ace, known to have mastered the art of rapid chess, had recently suffered a setback in the finals of the Corsica Masters chess tournament where he lost the final against Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan. However, this was an excellent turnaround by Anand. World Cup winner Aronian, who scored 21 points including a 1-1 draw with Anand, finished second. Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan and Peter Svidler of Russia, who scored 20.5 points each, shared the third place. The event was played on a double round robin basis between 18 players over two days. The event had 11 players above 2700 ELO rating and none below the 2650 mark. Anand showed clinical approach in crushing his opponents, barring one against Jobava Baadur of Georgia, who came with a 1.5-0.5 margin. Baddur was the only one who lost both his games against Anand. Playing solidly in the first half of the event, Anand waited till the 15th round to wrest the lead from Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and thereafter the Indian did not look back. For the records, Anand lost two, won 14 and drew 18 games to win the event.

Samarvir Golf
Chandigarh, November 20 With four titles of the Royal Challenge circuit in his kitty, the in-form Kapurthala boy is all set to add one more crown and hopes to conquer the eighth hole, which he finds difficult. Among his top rivals is 19-year-old Anirban Lahiri of Secunderabad. A B.Com Part II student of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Anirban is currently the top-ranked amateur in the country. He won the GKD Memorial at Coimbatore and finished second in three other tournaments of the circuit. Joseph Chakola, who completes the quartet for the Doha Asian Games along with Gaganjeet, Anirban and Chirag Kumar, is currently ranked fourth on the Royal Challenge Order of Merit. This 22-year-old Coimbatore golfer is capable of upsetting the applecart of the favourites. The Chandigarh golf fans will miss Chirag Kumar and Himmat Rai. Chirag has been in splendid form this season. Winner of the amateur category in the 2006 Indian Open, Chirag also clinched the Singapore amateur and Pakistan amateur titles. Managed by the Tiger Sports Marketing, the championship promises five days of exciting golf. The par-72 7052-yard facility is regarded as one of the longest in the country. The lush Chandigarh course with its undulating fairways and fast greens calls for accuracy. The course captain, Mr Sandeep Sandhu, said the championship had attracted a record number of entries. This showed the growing popularity of amateur golf. He said the course was in top condition. The club had acquired Rs 50 lakh worth of equipment for the maintenance of the course. And with lights being put up at more and more greens, night golf would very soon be played on the course. Talking about the difficult eighth hole, Sandhu said the new imported grass from the USA on that hole brought out the best in the golfers. “One has to overcome the subtle slopes while putting on this green,” he said. Mr Gurpratap Singh Sahi, father of Samarvir, in whose memory the tournament is played, thanked the organisers for scheduling the tournament in such a manner that it matched his son’s date with destiny — Samarvir breathed his last on November 20, 1994. The main championship will be played from November 21 to 24, followed by the am-am event on November 25. |
NIS ruled out as site for defence varsity

The third site visited by the team was Sidhuwal village along the Patiala-Bhadson road. The other members of the team were Air Vice-Marshal M.S. Randhawa, Joint Secretary (Training), (Ministry of Defence) Mr Jitender Singh and Brig Y.N Sharma. The Principal Secretary, Department of Defence Welfare, Government of Punjab, Mrs Geetika Kalha, Director, Sainik Welfare, Punjab Mr J.S. Jaspal and the Patiala Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Mr Gurkiratkirpal Singh, accompanied the team on its visits. Sources revealed that the team never had on its agenda the NIS, which was announced as a site for the university by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. |
Dempo draw with East Bengal
New Delhi, November 20 The Kolkata league champions dished out a disappointing show in their tournament opener and were lucky to have come out with even honours in a lacklustre match. In the entire match, they created only one opening, that too, after Dipankar Roy was sent off in the very first minute of the second half for a dangerous tackle on Clifford Miranda. East Bengal goalkeeper Rajat Ghosh Dashtadar had a brilliant day under the bar. Later, in another lacklustre but evenly contested Group II match, defending champions Army XI held JCT, Phagwara, to a goalless draw. Army XI’s ploy to crowd their defence and give little space to rival forwards Chidi Edeh and Parveen Kumar worked well till the end.

Aruna storms into semis
New Delhi, November 20 Aruna, gold medallist in the 2004 World Boxing Championship in Norway and silver medallist in the 2005 Asian Championship in Taiwan, was in such command that she gave little leeway to her rival to dominate her. The tall and sturdy girl from Jamshedpur landed a flurry of punches on her opponent in the first round to run up a 9-4 lead, which stood her in good stead in the next two rounds. She sustained her aggressive posture till the end to keep her rival on her toes. Aruna weaved and ducked brilliantly to avoid the punches of the Turkish lass, but at the same showed amazing speed and footwork to land quick punches on her rival, which completely rattled Yesil. India had a dream day today as Chhotu Loura and Sarita Devi had earlier moved into the quarter-final, winning their 50kg and 52kg bouts, respectively, to offset the defeat of three Indian girls on the first two days as Jyotsna also fell by the way side yesterday, losing to Semsi Yarali of Turkey in the 86kg, and Aswathy Mol in the 70kg today. Chhotu Loura dominated Delphine M from France in all three rounds to win by 19-9, after leading 6-0 and 12-5 in the first two. Sarita Devi, silver medallist in the 2004 World Championship, was a bit tentative in the beginning in her 52kg pre-quarterfinal bout against Sumeyra Kaya of Turkey, as she led by a thin margin of 4-2 in the first round. But she picked up momentum in the second round to punch her rival left and right to run up a 13-4 lead, which she widened to 18-6 when the final gong sounded. The five-time national champion is now looking forward to a podium finish. However, in the last bout of the day, Aswathy Mol could not match the speed and punches of Ariane Fotin of Canada to lose the 70 kg bout. Outside of the Indian interest, one bout that captured the attention of all was the 63kg bout between defending champion Nemtsova Yulia of Russia and Zueting Niu of China. The Chinese girl went on such aggressive punching that the Russian could recover her ground only in the second and third rounds to tie the score at 10-10. The bout was decided after tallying the hand scoring of the judges, which eventually gave a 24-22 verdict to the defending champion who moved into the semis. |
