Workshop on role of religious leaders in combating AIDS

Chandigarh, November 10
A one-day sensitisation workshop on role of faith building organisations (FBOs) in combating HIV/AIDS was held at Gurdwara Sahib in Khuda Jassu village here today.

A press note said the workshop was organised by the State AIDS Control Society in collaboration with the Sports and Welfare Club, Khuda Lahora.

The workshop was aimed at involving religious leaders for generating awareness regarding the prevention of HIV/AIDS among the masses, reducing stigma and discrimination and providing care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS. Approximately 45 granthis attended the workshop.

Dr Sonia Trikha Khullar, Project Director, State AIDS Control Society (SACS), in her interactive discussion with the granthis, elaborated upon Indian and regional scenario with regard to HIV/AIDS. She emphasised the role of religious leaders in motivating their disciples for adopting responsible behaviour and improving upon their health seeking behaviour, especially with regard to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Dr Vandana Dewan, Deputy Director (T&S), SACS, deliberated upon various facilities available for testing of HIV, antiretroviral treatment facility and network available for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) in the UT.

Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh, Gurdwara Sahib, Khuda Jassu, spoke on the role of religious leaders in reducing stigma and discrimination among the community. Mr Hakikat Singh and Sant Mohinder Singh urged the granthis for empowering the community through education and skill building during their discourses.

Pulse polio rally held

Chandigarh, November 10
The Government Model High School, Sector 29-A, organised a rally for the pulse polio campaign here today under the presidentship of Dr G. P. Singh, SMO, Sector 19 dispensary.

At least 300 students, Dr Parveen Bhalla and the staff of the school, took part in the rally, which was flagged of by Ms Shobha Kapoor, Headmistress.

On November 12, 13 and 14, polio drops will be administered to children.

NPS, DAV dominate

Chandigarh, November 10
New Public School, Sector 18, beat Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, 4-0 in the opening match of Chandigarh Junior Boys (u-19) Football Championship held at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today.

The New Public School team dominated the proceedings from the beginning and scored their first goal through their right striker Jashanpreet in the 8th minute. GSSS-15 boys tried hard to contain the damage but failed in their attempt as they conceded a second goal in the 10th minute, again scored by Jashanpreet on a pass given by right half Sudhman. At half time, the score stood at 2-0.

After break, NPS boys added two more goals and the scorers were Aita Ram and Sukhman.

In the second match, DAV Public School, Sector 15, beat GMSSS-19 5-0. The right striker Bony Singh scored a hat trick for DAV team. He scored three goals in 15th, 20th and 27th minute. At half time the score was 3-0. After break, DAV-15 added two more goals through Karan and Bony Singh in 35th and 40th minute.

In the third match, Sanjay Public School-44 defeated Moti Ram Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, 4-1 in a one-sided match. Sanjay boys were a better side and the scorers were Gunmant (20th minute), Alam 26th and 34th minute. The fourth goal was scored by Ajay in the 50th minute. Rohit of Moti Ram reduced the margin.

DAV SSS-8 beat GMSSS-22 3-0 in the last match of the day.

Ranji probables announced

Mohali, November 10
Pankaj Dharmani will lead the Punjab Ranji team for the full season. The decision was taken in the Punjab State Selection Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra at the PCA Stadium here today.

The committee also announced the names of 18 probables out of which the final 15 would be selected on November 15.

The 18 probables are: Pankaj Dharmani (captain), Ravneet Ricky, Munish Sharma, Karan Goel, Uday Kaul, Gaurav Gupta, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Gaurav Marwaha, Rajesh Sharma, V.R.V. Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Amit Uniyal, Vipul Sharma, Love Abhlash, Ishan Malhotra, Varun Khanna, Rahul Sharma and Ankur Jund

Anchal karatekas declared overall winners

Anchal International Martial Arts Academy, Chandigarh, declared the overall champion in the first Indo-Nepal Tae Kwon Do Karate competition held at St. Thomas Public School, New Delhi, recently.

The team won 16 medals in all.

Bhavan rout St Xavier’s in cricket

A fine knock of 60 runs by Varun ably supported by Aditya, who contributed an unbeaten 33 runs, enabled the Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula team to beat St Xavier’s High School, Sector 20, Panchkula, by a huge margin of 138 runs in a league match during the fifth Satluj u-14 Cricket Tournament for school teams being held at Satluj grounds, Sector 4, here, today.

Brief scores: Bhavan Vidyalaya-15: 189 for 5 in 20 overs (Varun 60, Aditya 33 n.o., Shubam 30)

St Xavier's: 51 all out (Shubham 5 for 18, Varun 2 for 8)

The following players have been selected to represent Chandigarh state taekwondo team to participate in the 42nd National Sub-Juniors Taekwondo Championship commencing from November 12 at Ambala.

Punjab, HP asked to speed up housing projects

Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have been asked to mobilise projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme.

This was stated by Secretary, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Government of India, Ranjit Issar, during his visit to the city here.

He said he had met Chief Secretaries of the two states to submit as many projects as possible through the IHSDP so that the basic service of housing could be made available to all.

Mr Issar, who is also Chairman and Managing Director of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), said he had also asked the two governments to lay special emphasis on heritage cities for development.

He also attended a function organised at HUDCO regional office as part of the Vigilance Awareness Week.

He distributed prizes to the winners of a painting competition held to mark World Habitat Day.

Children from slum areas participated in the seminar. The prize winners were: Pooja of Government High School, Daria, and Brij Bhushan of Government Model High School, Sector 20 D.
