Nagrota (Jammu), October 31
For residents of the villages along the national highway it was a rare spectacle of a train running on the road towards Srinagar from Jammu this morning.

The broad-gauge rail coach is one of the 24 that will be taken to Srinagar for running a local train within the valley in coming February. The coach is running not on iron wheels and rail track, but on the road with truck tyres.

It was an unbelievable sight for many who woke up amidst the noise of the excited youngsters when the train passed through small hamlets.

The trial coach is expected to cover the 300 km to Budgam in Kashmir in about 15 days.

The rail coach that is being pulled by a 460 horsepower special trailer truck hit the highway at 7 in the morning amidst mantras by the priest.

However, the rail coach had to stop here for the night after covering a distance of about 14 km as the triangle on the highway across the Nandni tunnel had to be broken to make way for the nearly 102 ft. long coach and trailer-truck. It took almost five hours for it to cover the distance up to this place.

Mr Shiv Ram, Divisional Engineer (Mechanical), Northern Railways, told The Tribune that the road at that point would be made worthy of the coach being driven from there tomorrow morning.

The exercise that was first of its kind in the history of the Railway has generated a lot of interest among the locals. A snag had prevented the coach from reaching the highway yesterday.

The Vaishno Devi pilgrims and motorists were dumbfounded as they stopped on the highway to witness the rail coach running on the serpentine road.

Joginder Singh, the driver of the trailer-truck pulling the 70 ft long coach, proudly waved to the onlookers as he steered the vehicle.

He said he had been carrying heavy equipment for the construction of power and industrial projects elsewhere in the country, but this was for the first time that he was pulling a rail coach on the mountainous highway.

The truck tyres will be replaced with iron wheels for running on the rail track once the coach reaches Budgam.

The experiment of driving the rail coach on the highway has been necessitated due to the commitment of the Centre of running the local train within Kashmir valley in February next. The Railway was spending about Rs 15 lakh on the transportation of each coach to the valley.

These could have been driven to the valley through the rail link that was being constructed right up to Srinagar from Jammu, but that would take a couple of years to be completed.
