Field day on farm machinery
Ludhiana, October 27 Dr S.S. Ahuja, Head, Department of Farm Power and Machinery, highlighted the need and purpose of diversification of agriculture and explained that this event was being held to educate and acquaint the gathering regarding the benefit of use of machinery. Dr D.R. Kataria, Joint Director, Agriculture Punjab, who was the chief guest stated that in view of the fact that land holdings in the state were getting fragmented it was very difficult for small farmers who were also under debt to buy such costly equipment. He mentioned that the Punjab Government had provided subsidy for various farm equipment for accelerating diversification of agriculture. Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar, PAU, in his valedictory address emphasised that keeping in view the fragmentation of land holdings and high cost of machinery the farmers should purchase these costly farm machinery in user groups or establish cooperative societies for agricultural implements. |

Ludhiana, October 27 Dr Prithpal Singh, former Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Dr Khark Singh graced the occasion as the guest resource persons. The Principal, Ms Prabhjot Kaur, accorded a warm welcome to the chief guest and distinguished professors from other colleges.Ms Gagandeep Kaur Bains conducted the stage. Dr Prithpal Singh stressed on the importance of ‘bhagatbani’ as an indispensable part of Shri Guru Granth Sahib. He also urged the students to understand the real meaning of religion and spread this message throughout the world. Dr Khark Singh exhorted the audience not to consider Shri Guru Granth Sahib as a book only but as a spiritual guide in their lives. He also threw light on the age-old philosophy of each person being equal in the eyes of God and urged everyone to understand the meaning of “Ekas Ke Hum Barak” as enshrined in Shri Guru Granth Sahib. He said Shri Guru Granth Sahib was a symbol of unity and equality in our society and its ideology was common for to all religions. Dr H.S. Dilgir referred to the “bani” of Bhagat Ravidas for humanism. He said women were superior in the society as per Shri Guru Granth Sahib. Dr Kripal Singh also spoke on the topic. Students of the college also interacted with the speakers. Ms Prabhjot Kaur, Principal of the college, stressed the need to study Shri Guru Granth Sahib in various institutions. She referred to the work done by Dr Prithpal Singh Kapoor, Dr Khark Singh Kapoor, Dr H.S. Dilgir, Dr Baijinder Singh, Prof Pavittar Kaur, Prof Adarsh Kaur and Prof Prem Singla were also present. intelligence An extension lecture was organised by the Postgraduate Department of Commerce of Arya College on the “Value of Emotional Intelligence in Developing Effective Leadership Style” here today. “In this dynamic world, to become an effective leader there is a need to mould oneself according to the circumstances,” said Dr Meenakshi Malhotra, Professor at the University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Professor Kamini Behl introduced Ms Malhotra to the faculty and students. Principal S.M. Sharma and Professor H.R. Saini, Head, Postgraduate Department of Commerce, welcomed her. Dr Malhotra gave her valuable suggestions on effective leadership and self-control mechanism. She said in this competitive world there was a striving need for a person to become effective and adaptable to the changing circumstances. She laid emphasis on the role of developing emotional intelligence in day-to-day life along with technical competencies and IQ. She explained to the faculty and students various leadership styles like coercive, affiliative, democratic and coaching. An effective leader was one who combined all these leadership styles in the right proportions according to different circumstances. Emphasis was also laid on the components of emotional intelligence i.e self awareness, self management, social awareness and social skills. Besides having a specialisation in a particular field, one should be aware of others’ viewpoint and their problems. Clinching the issue, she said the need of the hour was to integrate technical intelligence alongwith leadership traits. All the students of M.Com actively participated and enjoyed her thought-provoking lecture. technology The GGN Institute of Management and Technology organised a seminar on ‘Distributed Systems and Data Warehouse’ for the students of the BCA and the MCA here today. Mr Vikram Singh Walia, Software Engineer, TCS, Mumbai, was the resource person. Defining the distributed systems, Mr Walia said the components of such a database were located at a number of sites interconnected by means of a communication network. He explained that each node of distributed system consisted of an independent computer system and its software. He further added that the distributed systems were the most upcoming technology as many organisations today had geographically dispersed operations. Highlighting the advantages, he said these systems provided increased availability, reliability and possibility of incremental growth which further made it a very popular stream. The second half of the seminar focused on data warehouse. A data warehouse was a separate data environment that was not directly integrated with day-to-day applications but encompassed all the data used by a business, said Mr Walia. He also pointed out that a data warehouse was a large, independent database that included some, but not all, of the data that were stored in databases that served the set of applications required by a business. The seminar concluded with a question-answer round where the students cleared their doubts and gained tremendously from the guests’ work experience. Also present on the occasion were Mr Kuldip Singh, Director, and Mr G.S.Dua, coordinator of the institute. They thanked and honoured the guests for sharing valuable information with the students. |
Chidambaram to be chief guest at PAU convocation
Ludhiana October 27 The Chancellor,Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd),will preside. According to the Registrar, Dr V.K. Sharma, 333 degrees will be awarded. Out of these, 70 are Doctor of Philosophy and 263 Masters' Programme (Master of Science, Business Administration, Technology and Veterinary Science). In addition, 80 merit certificates would be given to the candidates who have secured highest overall grade point average of 8 or more out of 10. At the convocation,Dr. Sharma said 31 gold medals and medals, nine awards and one prize will also be given. The degrees to be awarded cover the period from July, 2005, to June, 2006. The students of College of Veterinary Science,who secured degrees from PAU till April 20, 2006, will also be given degrees; though, College of Veterinary Science has since been elevated to the status of a University. In all, 26 M.V.Sc. degrees will be awarded. |
College get-together for prize winners
Doraha, October 27 Dr Narinder Singh Sidhu, Principal, asked them to work hard and participate in forthcoming inter-zonal festivals to be organised at DAV College, Chandigarh, from November 1. He said out of a total of 40 items presented in the festival, the college participated in 38 items and won commendation in 29 items. “If the participation was of 137 students, 121 have been placed on various positions. The college secured the first positions in 15 items,” he said. Individual positions were won by Ramandeep Singh, Harvir Singh, Davinder Singh, Ajaypal Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Harjinder Singh, Jagjodh Singh, Sunita Rani, Rajvir Kaur, rupinder Kaur, Parmeet Singh, Jaspreet Kaur, Pavil and Sukhwinder Singh. Local youth shines at IPS academy
Ludhiana, October 27 Mr Madhur Verma, IPS (Indian Police Services), resident of Atam Nagar here, has shown phenomenal performance during the training of 58th batch of the Indian Police Service probationers. He has been awarded with L.B. Sewa Memorial trophy for best trainee in co-curricular activities. The youth’s father, Mr V.M. Verma is with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) The officer made new swimming records in 100 m freestyle and 200 m freestyle. He also won gold medals in 50 m freestyle, 50 m butterfly, 200 m individual medlay, 50 m backstroke, 4x50 m medlay and 4x100 m freestyle. He has also been awarded with R.D. Singh Cup for the best swimmer of the year. The officer proved his mettle in badminton too by winning singles and mixed doubles. He also won a gold medal in snooker tournament. He emerged as runner-up in chess and squash tournaments. In team games, he was declared man of the series in cricket tournament. His team won gold in basketball and water polo. Manninder Pratap Singh, IPS, another officer from Punjab, performed excellently by winning the second best all-rounder probationer and K.K. Shaw trophy for scientific aid to investigations. |
