Seminar on organ donation today

Ludhiana, October 25
A seminar on organ donation will be organised by the Department of Urology and Transplant Surgery, DMCH, on October 26 at Dumra Auditorium. Mr Surinder Singla, Minister for Health and Finance, Punjab, will inaugurate it and discuss the health issues related to organ transplant.

Mr J.S. Verma, former Chief Justice of India, will be the guest of honour. He will talk about the Human Organ Transplant Act and how it could be more helpful for the people. He will also discuss the pitfalls, if any, in the Act. Dr B.S. Aulakh, Professor and Head of Transplant Department at the DMCH, will also give a talk.

At the seminar the organisers and Rotarians will lay stress on the dismal situation of organ donation in India. Various myths regarding organ donation and transplant will be addressed. The motive is to convey an important message that a person can help others even after his death by donating his organs.

Dr Virendar Pal Singh, co-organiser of the event, stated that the seminar could be attended by anyone.

Lobbying on for medical council poll

Battle lines have been drawn for the election to three seats of the Punjab Medical Council to be held in November-end.

The PMC was revived following a petition by the IMA in the Punjab and Haryana High Court four years ago.

Dr O.P.S. Kande from Patiala, Dr R.C. Garg from Barnala, Dr Yash Sharma, Dr H.S. Mann and Dr S.P.S. Grover from Jalandhar are in the fray.

The local candidate, Dr Anurag Goswami, is being supported by Dr Gurshran Singh, Chairman of the disciplinary committee of the PMC.

Four members, including the president, will be nominated by the state government.

315 examined at medical camp

Samrala, October 25
A free medical check-up camp was organised by a team of doctors headed by Dr Suresh Mittal, Senior Medical Officer of the Government Primary Health Centre, Manupur, near here, at Government Senior Secondary School, Ghungrali Sikhan.

Village Sarpanch Gurpal Singh and school Principal Gurmeet Kaur Dhaliwal jointly inaugurated the ceremony. Dr Manjit Singh, Dr Virk, Dr Satinder pal, Dr Prabhjot Kaur, service provider Dr Atul Gupta from Subsidiary Health Centre, Gharkhana, and Mr Manmohan Kumar Puri , In charge Government MPHC, Ghungrali Sikhan, were also present .

As many as 315 patients from different villages were given a checkup at the camp. Free medicines were also provided.

Lectures on dengue and AIDS were delivered by Mr Bhinder Singh, Mr Ajit Singh and Mr Sarbjit Singh of Ghungrali Sikhan School.

NCC cadets helped in bringing old patients from different villages to the camp.They were guided by Senior Division NCC Officer, Lt Jatinder Kumar, and the school Principal. Tea was also served by NCC cadets to all patients and other staff present at the camp.

At the end of the day, sarpanch thanked the team of doctors, staff of the Health Department, Principal, school staff, NCC Officer and NCC cadets for their co-operation and help.

Alpine school romps home in tennis tourney

Ludhiana, October 25
Hosts Alpine Intenational Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, recorded 3-1 win over the DAV Public School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, in the inaugural match of the CBSE Cluster-XVI Zone Table Tennis Tournament which began here today.

In the first match of the boys' team (u-14), Sahil of the Alpine school lost to Sahil Bansal of the DAV School 12-14, 11-9, 8-11 and 9-11. However, Vikrant of the Alpine School won the second match in four sets 9-11, 11-8, 11-3 and 11-9 to level the score.

Shubham of the Alpine School wrapped up the third match against Kanav in straight sets 12-10, 11-7 and 11-8 to help his school gain the lead. In the fourth match, Vikrant got the better of Sahil 11-4, 11-4, 8-11 and 11-8 to enable his school register a 3-1 win.

Earlier, Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister for Science, Technology and Horticulture, declared the four-day tournament open.

Participants from 40 schools of Punjab, affiliated with the CBSE, are taking part in this tournament. Ms Rajeshwari Dhir, Principal of the host school, welcomed the chief geust and the participants.

Chief consultant nominated to hockey body

Dr Harpreet Singh Gill, Consultant in the Department of Orthopedics at Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospital here, has been nominated as the chief consultant, sports injuries to the Punjab Hockey Federation.

He was a post-doctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins hospital, Baltimore, USA, for a period of one year. He has taken advanced training in management of sports injuries and joint replacements.

Dr Gill has more than 50 international publications and presentations to his credit on the subject and has also been invited to various international and national conferences as a guest speaker.

Commenting on his task ahead, he stressed that he would create awareness about various sports injuries and their prompt management so that the return to sports could be at the earliest. Some careers of players were lost as they were not well managed in the initial phase of their injury, he said.

A database of injuries will be made and the players, coaches, managers would be educated about their prevention.

He also said the concept of ‘team physician’ was popular in the west and it should be introduced in India too. In this, a specialist doctor was permanently attached to the team and was responsible for all health problems of players.
