Bulgarian artistes to perform at
local college
Ludhiana, October 25 The Principal of the college Dr Balwant Singh and the festival director Mr Devinder Singh Chhina in a joint statement today said that more International folk artists from other European countries would also join the Punjab festival during various performances across the state till November 6, 2006. Mr Chhina said that Bulgarian Delegation was one of the biggest folk group visiting Punjab on the invitation of PCPC and Partap College. PCPC had already successfully organised International events in December 2002 and February-March 2006 and cultural groups from Slovakia and Denmark had already performed in the city. He said that such cultural exchange programs aimed at strengthening cross-country relations and international friendship. The group will also visit Golden Temple Amritsar and would pray for World peace, said Mr Chhina. |

Ludhiana, October 25 They have been given almost perfect training in accounts so much so that some of them have joined their family businesses whereas others have started own small ventures. Ms Suversha Kalra, caretaker and in charge of the school, says that she feels satisfied to dedicate over 50 years of her life in making and shaping the lives of the children of a lesser God. “I always wanted to do something for these children. Perhaps that is the reason that I did not get married. But I am happy to see them establishing themselves independently,” she said. Now, these students are able to make beautiful candles, jutebags and boxes, artificial flowers and other craft articles. The school had put up an exhibition of these articles on Divali. Some of the girls had opened their boutiques and were able to do knitting, stitching and embroidery on “Their parents feel satisfied to see them settled,” said Ms Kalra. The school was started in 1966 with only six students. “Initially, people were reluctant to send their children to us. But with the dedicated staff, we have been able to give education to over 200 students (deaf and dumb) today. “We are running a hostel with 72 students from Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra. “People are willing to send their wards to us because of our nominal fee structure. The school is 10+2 and all students appear for exams privately,” added Ms Kalra. The school does not get even a single penny from the government. Local philanthropists and former students of Ms Suversha Kalra help her to run the school smoothly with donations. The dayscholars come from interiors of the city and even from outskirts of the city like Jamalpur and Giaspura. The school management has purchased two vehicles to pick and drop these children. During her recent visit to the school, Gurpreet Hari (Guruma) had donated two computers and an internet connection for making the students computer-savvy. |
PAUTA delegation meets CM
Ludhiana October 25 A spokesman of the delegation said the Chief Minister assured that he would look into the matter.The spokesman said the Chief Minister told the delegation that he had already issued the instructions to the officials concerned after the PAUTA delegation met him here last time. |
Complaint against PSEB dismissed
Ludhiana, October 25 The orders were pronounced by Mr A.S. Narula, president of the forum, and members Daljit Singh Bakshi and Pooja Dewan while deciding the complaint filed by Anju Bala of New Upkar Nagar. It was submitted by the consumer that in October 2005, she received a bill dated October 10, wherein she was asked to pay Rs 39,830, along with a surcharge of Rs 3,878. An amount of Rs 29,209 was added as sundry charges and allowances. On enquiry, she was told that the amount was charged on account of power theft. She said the checking was not done in her presence and was not intimated regarding any checking in the ME Laboratory. The counsel for the PSEB said the meter was packed and sealed in the presence of Poonam Manchanda, the complainant’s sister-in-law who lives in the same property. It was tested in the laboratory in view of the consent letter signed by the said woman. During the testing, a hole was found in the lower part of the meter and there were scratches on the slit. |
Tradition on display at crafts mela
Ludhiana, October 25 Mr B.C. Upreti, the Branch Manager, while elaborating about the exhibition said the rich tapestry of the North-East had been displayed in the exhibition. The traditions, ethnic origin, of the fertile Brahamputra valley, Barak valley and its surrounding mountainous areas have been reflected in the works. “In the recent past, the craftsmen have begun making items of cane and bamboo furniture which suit modern tastes and preferences of customers”, said Mr Upreti. The sital patti made with a kind of reed was appreciated at the exhibition. Traditional handlooms, including Assam muga sarees, mulvery silk saree, endi chaddar, Naga shawls, gamocha, laishingphee which are popular all over in India are other items of attraction. |
