Mumbai, October 18 Taylor bowled Michael Hussey for 13 and Brett Lee for a duck off consecutive balls as Australia, needing 21 off 13 balls to overhaul West Indies’ 234 for six, crumbled under pressure. With the first ball of the following over, Taylor bowled Brad Hogg for 10. At the end of their 50 overs Australia were 224 for nine with Taylor taking four for 49. Adam Gilchrist led Australia’s challenge with a measured 92 before he was run out. Earlier, Runako Morton struck an unbeaten 90 and Brian Lara hit 71 as West Indies recovered from a top order slump to post a competitive 234. The 28-year-old Morton hit seven fours and a six in his 103-ball knock and added 137 runs with Lara to pull their side from a precarious 63 for four in the day-night clash at the Brabourne Stadium here. World Cup champions Australia were left with an asking rate of 4.7 to win the match and take two points from their first match of the tournament. Creditably for West Indies, the title holders, they scored the highest total at this venue so far in three matches, overhauling New Zealand's 195 all out against South Africa two days ago. Test ‘B’ sample to establish facts: Mohammad Asif
Islamabad, October 18 Asif, who was recalled from the ongoing Champions Trophy in India along with fellow speedster Shoaib Akhtar on Monday after the duo tested positive for banned steroid nandrolone, said it could be due of the injections he took to recover from his elbow injury. “I have never used any performance enhancing drugs in my life. I can tell you very honestly that I have never ever come near to such substances,” Asif said breaking his silence over the dope fiasco. “The only possibility is that there might be something in injections I used during recovery of my injury. It is up to the Board how they take our cases. I will, however, request them to take B sample before making their judgement,” he was quoted as saying by The News. The paceman said he had taken the injections in full knowledge of doctors while recovering from his elbow injury. “During my injury and recovering process, I did use some injections only with the permission of and prescription of doctors,” Asif said. The 23-year-old talented fast bowler said he was shocked to hear the news of the positive tests because he could not even think of such a move at the start of his career. “I never have thought that I would be tested positive of any substance as I have not used anything like that. No young and upcoming bowler ever thinks of consuming such drugs. So no question arises of may involvement in such practices,” he said. Asif also denied reports that he smoked cannabis during Pakistan’s recent tour of England. “It is totally ridiculous. I have never used such things and those who are pointing at me should keep in mind the consequences. “I do not know why some quarters are trying to implicate me in such things. I am not an addict and substances found in the test do not reveal anything like that,” he said. — PTI |
Cricket not immune to drugs: Rameez
Jaipur, October 18 “Yes, even though cricket is very different from other sports like athletics. A line has got to be drawn. With so many one-dayers being played, the players fear injuries and lack of performance. So there is an element of drug there,” Rameez told PTI here. Pakistan lost its pace spearheads Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif a day before their first match in the Champions Trophy after it was revealed that they had tested positive for steroids in tests conducted last month. Raja, who played in 57 Tests and scored 2,833 runs, also questioned the timing of the tests. “The criticism is about the timing. The tests should have been conducted long before the Champions Trophy. (Though the tests were done in September), the results come much later. The WADA lab takes time to process the samples. That is the only questionable aspect,” he said. The 44-year-old player-turned-commentator, however, believed that the players did not take drugs for performance enhancement. “It is unfortunate and embarrassing. Had it been only Shoaib (Akhtar), I wouldn’t have raised my eyebrows. But since Mohammad Asif (is also involved), I think that it was probably administered to facilitate rehabilitation.” Rameez said the PCB had taken steps to educate the players about its anti-doping policy. “Players are certainly educated. In my time as the CEO (of the PCB), there were series of meetings with the players to let them know about this. It boils down to sheer discipline,” he said. Raja was all praise for the grit shown by the Pakistan team that shrugged off the dope controversy to hand a four-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka here yesterday. Raja said the victory did not come as a surprise to him. “There is nothing unpredictable about this team. I think it is a tag unfairly labelled. This team has been very much predictable in the last couple of years,” he said. — PTI |
Hamid, Alam to probe dope scam
Karachi, October 18 Hamid will head the inquiry committee, other members for which would be announced later, The Nation reported. Intikhab, who also coached the national team in the past, is likely to look after the cricketers’ interests besides guiding the committee to professional affairs of the players and their needs regarding use of various drugs. Akhtar and Asif tested positive for a banned steroid nandrolone in a dope tests conducted by the PCB before the ongoing Champions Trophy in India and have been pulled out of the tournament.

Asiad probables for national hockey meet
Chandigarh, October 18 The IHF had issued a directive that all members of the national team and standbys should report for the national camp at Rourkela where a latest version of the synthetic surface, similar to one laid by organizers of the Doha Asian Games, has been recently installed. Fifteen games, including hosts Punjab taking on Chattisgarh, Maharshtra playing Universities and Kerala drawn against Haryana, are billed for the opening day. Initially, the IHF was insisting that all 35 players in the national camp should not play in the National Championship. But now on pressure from the organizers, it has relented and allowed 15 of these players to represent their respective units. “Yes, we have got the intimation that only 20 top players will not be playing in the national championship. Others have joined their respective teams which started arriving in Punjab since yesterday. Most of the teams are expected by late tonight or early tomorrow morning,” said Mr Hardeep Singh Dhillon, organizing Secretary of the Championship. Tomorrow, he says, there will be a workshop of all umpires, managers, coaches and other technical officials at Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar where they will have an interactive session on rules and their interpretation. “It is very important that our players know the exact interpretation of rules. Our national team has paid heavy penalty in crucial games in international tournaments for their inadequate knowledge of gravity of offenses committed by them unwittingly,” says Mr Dhillon. The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, will formally inaugurate the tournament at Jalandhar though the first four matches will start at 9 am at each of the four venues — Guru Nanak Dev University Stadium (Amritsar), Surjit Singh Stadium (Jalandhar), Prithipal Singh Stadium (Ludhiana) and Bhaini Sahib (Ludhiana). There will be 16 matches on the second day. In all there will be 68 matches in the preliminary league round spread over first six days of the tournament. |

Gurgaon, October 18 Freddy Marcarenhas (62nd) and Nicholas Rodrigues (90th) scored for the Goans, while Sandeep Malik (65th) and Sanjeev (75th) found the net for Haryana. Till the 82nd minute, when play was stopped due to power failure at the Chaudhuri Devi Lal Stadium here, the hosts were leading 2-1. Haryana had come from behind after trailing 0-1 till the 65th minute and the vociferous home crowd was anticipating a Haryana win which would have put them in contention for the semi-final berth. But the Rodrigues strike denied them the win and Haryana are now eliminated, having collected only two points from three matches. Playing their best match so far, the hosts could have won the thrilling match by a bigger margin but the woodwork denied that on two occasions. Egged on a by the partisan crowd, Haryana turned the tables and the Goan defence looked both vulnerable and porous with repeated Haryana attacks. The mercurial Goans today failed to find the touch of the last match against Bengal which they had won 2-0. — UNI |
Gurgaon, October 18 A Nicholas Rodrigues last minute strike saw the Goans fighting back a spirited Haryana for 2-2 draw but that was not for a semi-final berth as Bengal beat Punjab 1-0 and the latter pipped the defending champions on goal difference. Punjab and Goa have four points each but the former have a plus one goal difference while the latter have a goal difference of zero. Punjab had won 2-0 against Goa and drawn with Haryana 0-0 while Bengal had beaten Haryana 1-0 and lost to Goa 0-2 in their earlier matches. Bengal topped the group with six points from three matches and will play Group B runners-up in the first semi-final on Sunday while Punjab face Group B winners in the second semi-final on the same day. Kerala play Karnataka while Maharashtra take on Tamil Nadu in Group B matches tomorrow on the last day of quarter-final league stage. The Bengal-Punjab match did never rise to great heights with both the sides failing to create clear chances. The all-important goal came when Dipendu’s curling right footer, in the 57th minute, crashed into the net, giving Punjab goalkeeper Kamleshwar Singh little chance to react. — UNI |

Madrid, October 18 The Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram dropped just three games in the entire match on their way to a facile 6-0, 6-3 win in the Euro 2,082,500 tournament.
