Roller skaters face
bleak future
Chandigarh, October 10 It was more than a decade ago when the department stopped issuing sports gradation certificates to deserving roller skaters seeking admission to professional and other courses on the basis of sports merit. The skating fraternity argues that the sports departments in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and several other states in the country continue to issue such certificates to skaters. When the Union Territory of Chandigarh follows rules of the Punjab Government in terms of other matters, why is it not following Punjab in respect of sports? The players pursuing sports under the gradation system enjoy benefits allowed by the state government while those practising non-graded sports are left high and dry. One per cent seats in educational institutions and government jobs are reserved for players from the graded sports. When international skater Shakun Salwan was awarded the provisional sports gradation certificate by the Chandigarh Sports Department about two years ago, it was being understood that she had paved the way for the future skaters. After being denied the right to apply for sports gradation by the department, Shakun approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court, considering roller skating as a sport, had ruled that a provisional sports gradation certificate be issued to her within seven days. The officials concerned delivered the gradation certificate to Shakun at her residence. “The gradation for this sport was granted by the Punjab Government about three years ago. Earlier, the game was only recognised by Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. So, on behalf of the Punjab Roller Skating Association, we put our petition before the Punjab Government and got it sanctioned,” said J.S. Dhaliwal, general secretary, District Roller Skating Association, Ludhiana. The Director (Sports), Chandigarh, Mr Inderjit Singh Sandhu, said, “We certainly need to set a limitation, so we have included those disciplines for gradation that are on the Charter of Athens Olympics 2004. Of course, now cricket has been included. Our plan is to groom players in those disciplines, which are recognised on global parameters. Otherwise, there would be no
end to it”. Moreover, The UT Education Department had been conducting the UT inter-school roller skating tournament regularly. Many city-based outstanding skaters represented the country abroad and even bagged remarkable positions at Asian Skating Championship in roller hockey in Japan and Germany. They were honoured by the Chandigarh Administration. Skaters like Kriti Puri and Mehak Paul were honoured on the Republic Day and Independence Day functions, which spoke of the patronage to the sport. |
