Young Yadavindrians set for a date with theatre
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 10
Young Yadavindrians are all set to stage a play ‘‘A Christmas Carol’’ by Charles Dickens at Tagore Theatre on October 12. The entire Class V, which will be passing out of the junior school in December this year, has been cast in the play.

Directed by the school’s theatre teacher Zubin Mehta, the play has kept over 120 students involved for the past one month. ‘‘The play was divided into various groups and only in the past 10 days have the children been brought together and the five groups were weaved into one single play,’’ explained Ms Komal Anand the school Headmistress.

Zubin said he had held a special theatre workshop with all students of Class V first and following the workshop as many as 50 children were picked up and trained further. ‘‘I don’t treat them like children. For me they are actors and actresses. And they have been trained accordingly. They all know the technicalities of acting and have a fair knowledge of the lighting, the music etc also,’’ said Zubin adding that a live choir will play during the performance. A separate group of students are being trained to sing live during the various scenes of the play.

‘‘A Christmas Carol’’ is the story of a rich and miserly man whose long dead friends come back as ghosts and tell him that real happiness does not lie in money but in being with the family, sharing and caring for one another.

‘‘I always wanted to direct this play and doing it with 10 year olds is a challenge, specially when even technically the play is a difficult one, said Zubin.

Zubin has been associated with almost every theatre group in the city and has been with YPS for the past three years. He had earlier directed the school students in performing ‘‘The Tinder Box’’ last year.

PU sets up Students Grievance Cell
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 10
Panjab University has established a Students Grievance Cell. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof R.C. Sobti, told The Tribune that the cell would be headed by an officer, who would have two persons working under him, and work in a time-bound manner.

All complaints received from students for various problems like examinations, results, rules, etc, would be routed through the cell.

He added that the officer would himself be following the various complaints through various offices in the university rather than ask the students to do the running around.

Mr Dinesh Chander had been deputed as the first students grievance officer of the university and the cell would be functional soon, he said.

The cell would be different from the office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare, whose work is to ensure the welfare of the students on the campus. The cell would also take up complaints and requests send by students from affiliated colleges, private candidates and those pursing correspondence studies.

The cell would be given a dedicated telephone. It would also have its presence on the university’s official website so that students from outside the campus could also write to the cell.

The VC said the cell would also help in curbing incidents when small problems being faced by the university students flare up into strikes and protests.

“Students should spend majority of their time pursuing studies and doing research. I believe that students should be given an atmosphere conducive to studies,” said the VC.
