Cops give arms licence to criminal
Seven FIRs pending against him
Ludhiana, September 29

In stark evidence of police patronage of an alleged criminal, a cloth merchant-turned financier-turned-accused in seven FIRs was given arms licence of a .32 bore revolver on the basis of a ‘No Objection Certificate’ by the city police in 2005, which was issued despite the registration of cases against him.

Govt to review posting orders of 650 PCMS docs
Ludhiana, September 29
The state government has agreed to review recent transfer orders of 650 PCMS doctors all over Punjab but rationalisation of services of specialists will be continued to provide better health service in every hospital. It has been further decided that 872 PCMS doctors, selected during the tenure of the then Punjab Public Service Commission Chairman, Mr Ravi Sidhu, would be given the benefit of “annual increments and assured career progression” of four years and nine years of service.

Now, CM to inaugurate elevated road

After the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, could not spare time to inaugurate the Rs 51-crore elevated road project, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has now decided to get it opened from the Chief Minister.

SAD moves complaint to EC against rigging elections

The legal cell of Shiromani Akali Dal today appealed to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India to take action against the Punjab Government and a number of SSPs in Punjab who were taking along 'select' police officials to every place of their posting.

Procurement arrangements not yet complete
Contrary to reports submitted to admn

Contrary to reports submitted to the district administration, the authorities at the market committee, Kilariapur, have yet to complete the necessary arrangements for handling of paddy and providing basic amenities for farmers bringing their paddy at many procurement centres under their jurisdiction. Office-bearers of the committee said the reports, if already submitted, were misleading. A meeting has been called to review the arrangements.

MCPI(U) opposes setting up of SEZs
Ludhiana, September 29
The Marxist Communist Party of India (United) has opposed the policy of creation of special economic zones (SEZ) in the country. Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri, general secretary; and Kuldip Singh, member Politburo of MCPI(U), in a joint statement here said this policy creates a separate nation within nation. Moreover, this policy is absolutely discriminatory and against Indian entrepreneurs while favouring foreign companies that are being granted big concessions.

Forum organises march on Bhagat Singh’s centenary
Doraha, September 29
The Youth Forum of Doraha organised a ‘Chetna Mashal’ march during the birth centenary celebrations of Shaheed Bhagat Singh yesterday evening. The march went through various streets here and culminated near the statue of Bhagat Singh at the grain market, here.
Youth carried lit torches and candles and raised slogans of ‘Bhagat Singh amar rahe’ and ‘Bhagat Singh di soch te, pehra dewange thok ke.’

Rs 3.80 lakh stolen from car
Ludhiana, September 29
Burglars broke the window pane of an Indica car near Gill Chowk this afternoon and stole a bag containing Rs 3.80 lakh from a trader of Mandi Ahmedgarh. Jagtar Singh of Mandi Ahmedgarh , a trader of paddy husk, was having his lunch at Rishi Dhabha after withdrawing money from a bank. He left the bag in the Indica car (PB-28 C- 0425). His friend Tarsem Lal was with him.

Petroleum dealers threaten retaliation
Ludhiana, September 29
Irked with continued harassment of petroleum dealers all over the state by municipal authorities over collection of octroi, the Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association has threatened to retaliate and go to the extent of non-lifting of petroleum products if the matter was not sorted out immediately.

Ms Tarinder Kaur, a PhD scholar in the Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, has been adjudged winner of the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS) Zonal Award during a competition held by the Ludhiana chapter of the ISSS yesterday.

Chidambaram to preside over PAU convocation

Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will be the chief guest at the PAU annual convocation on October 31, 2006. According to the Registrar, 335 graduate and postgraduate degrees will be awarded at the convocation. This will cover the period from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006.
