PAU scholar gets award

Ludhiana, September 29
Ms Tarinder Kaur, a PhD scholar in the Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, has been adjudged winner of the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS) Zonal Award during a competition held by the Ludhiana chapter of the ISSS yesterday.

Dr Sudhir Verma from Palampur and Dr Anand Kumar Chaubey of Pantnagar have been recommended for the final round to be held at the 71st annual convention of ISSS at Bhubneshwar.

At the ISSS zonal contest, there were four contestants, who presented their respective MSc research work and three contestants presented the salient findings of their respective PhD research.

The judges of the contest were the ISSS vice-president, Dr V.K. Nayyar; Dr B. Tripathi from the Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni; Dr Ramesh Chandra from the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology; Dr I.M. Chhibba, president; and Dr B.S. Brar, secretary, Ludhiana chapter.

The Dean, Postgraduate Studies, Dr S.S. Chahal, was the chief guest at the contest.

Meanwhile, Dr Shashi Kumar Singh has been awarded the “innovative students” project award-2006 for his thesis “Design and development of a tractor mounted air-assisted sprayer for cotton”.

This award has been given by the Indian National Academy of Engineering, New Delhi.

With this sprayer, it is now feasible to spray underside of the leaves. The equipment is cost-effective and can be assembled easily.

According to a PAU spokesperson, this sprayer has helped to reduce the population of whitefly adults between 30 per cent and 70 per cent in cotton fields.

Guru Nanak School bags
Bhagat Singh Memorial Trophy

Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School won the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Running trophy in the inter-school declamation contest organised by the youth club of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, with the assistance of Youth Forum, Doraha, on the occasion of the centenary celebration of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at the seminar hall of the college , yesterday.

A total of 24 participants of 13 schools, including Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School, Shri Guru Harkishan Public School, Government Senior Secondary School, Shahpur, Government Senior Secondary School, Payal, Dashmesh Model Senior Secondary School Doraha, Saraswati Model Senior Secondary School, Shakti Public School, SPS Academy, Bhaini Sahib, Nankana Sahib Public Senior Secondary School, Kot Gangu Rai, G.N. Model School Doraha, Govt Senior Secondary School Kaddon, Arya Putri Senior Secondary School participated in the declamation contest and spoke on various topics related to the life of shaheed Bhagat Singh.

While Ravinder Kaur and Savneet Kaur of G.N. Model Senior Secondary School bagged the team trophy, individual prizes were won by Ravinder Kaur of G.N. Model Senior Secondary School, Hardeep Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School, Payal and Amrinder Singh of Saraswati Model School for the first, second and third positions respectively. Consolation prizes were won by Manpreet Kaur of GSS School , Kaddon and Satinder Kaur of SPS Academy, Bhaini Sahib School. Special prize was awarded to Narinder Kaur of Nankana Sahib Public School.

Mr Om Parkash Bector was the chief guest. Bibi Narinder Kaur Gill, the Maternal niece of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, was the special guest on the occasion. Mr Bector, an eminent freedom fighter, recalled the revolutionary career of Shaheed Bhagat Singh whose extraordinary energy and farsightedness challenged the world’s greatest imperialistic power. “The liberalised India owes him a great debt of gratitude and the youth of the day should realize the tremendous sacrifice of Bhagat Singh who laid down his life bearing unflinching faith. The nation needs to recall the sacrifices of these heroes and guide the present generation to walk on their footsteps to uphold the ideal of true sovereignty,” he added.

Prof Balwant Singh Pangli, general secretary, college managing committee said it was a great pity that the ideals of Shaheed Bhagat Singh should be recognised so little by his countrymen. Mr Tarlok Singh Jaggi, executive committee member, also said, “The ideal of self sacrifice, for which Bhagat Singh kissed the gallows, should be imbibed by the present generation for which the educational institutions have a prominent role” to play.

Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Director, said that Bhagat Singh was a crusader for the socialist cause. It would be wrong to know him only as a great patriot, he was an ideal representative of an era that ushered in new ideal and ideas through his creative mind with the might of his pen.

Dr Narinder Singh Sidhu, Principal of the college, offering a rich tribute to Shaheed opined that he fought, lived and died for his country and his sacrifice must not go in vain. Hardik, a student of Harkishan Public school, recited a poem on the life of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Mr Surjit Singh Jawanda, a renowned industrialist, Mr Tarlok Singh Jaggi, executive committee member, Mr Harjiwan Pal Singh Gill, Lakhwinder Singh Bowani, Pawan Kumar Kaushal, Prof Kuldeep Singh of GCW Ludhiana, Dr Kuldeep Singh of GNN College, Doraha, Prof Pargat Singh Sekhon, Director Youth Club were among those who graced the occasion.

Candle-light procession marks
Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary

Ludhiana, September 29
The 100th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh was observed here last night by the PAU Employees Union. The union lit candles in the residential quarters on the campus and in the union office under the leadership of president D. Maur and general secretary Amripal.

Hundreds of employees, women and children gathered to pay homage to the great martyr. The union leaders, while briefing about the life history of the martyr, termed him the greatest martyr of the anti- imperialist movement. They said the relevance of the ideology of Shaheed Bhagat Singh had become more pronounced than ever in the present day context because the socio-economic conditions had worsened now than at the time of the martyrdom of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Union leaders called upon the masses to uphold the ideology of the martyr and build a strong and broader anti-imperialist movement, so that a society of the dreams of Bhagat Singh can materialise.

Later the people took out a house-to-house march and lighted candles.

Inter-school Shabad Gayan competition held

Ludhiana, September 29
Baba Gurmukh Singh Memorial inter-school Shabad Gayan competition was held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, here yesterday. Schools from Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and other parts of the state participated in the contest.

The junior and senior team of the host school participated but did not compete for prizes. The judges were Mrs Anita, lecturer of music, Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana, Mrs Sumedha Wadhwa, lecturer music, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, Mrs Rajinder Kaur, lecturer music, Mata Ganga College for Women, Kottan.

The results are as follows:

1st prize — GGN Public School Ludhiana, 2nd — Raamgarhia Boys Senior Secondary School Millerganj, Ludhiana, 3rd — Guru Nanak International Public School Ludhiana. All the shabads were recited in the same raga as are given in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.

Prizes for tabla playing were won by: Ist prize — GGN Public School Ludhiana, 2nd prize — Ramgarhia Boys Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana and 3rd prize —Satguru Partap Singh, Bhaini Sahib. Ist consolation prize went to Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School, Millerganj Ludhiana, 2nd consolation prize went to Baba Budha Dal Public School, Patiala. Mr R S Gill, the Principal, distributed the prizes. Mr Lal Singh Lamba, Vice Principal, Mrs Pamela Lotey, Headmistress and Mrs Jagjit K. Jagdev, I/C Nursery section, honoured the judges. Mr Surinder Singh, Secretary of the school, presented a vote of thanks.

Talent search contest

A talent search contest was organised in KVM city branch. This competition is held every year under the aegis of the Humanities forum to tap raw talent. The school stage provides an opportunity to students to showcase their talent. The Headmistress, Mrs Namita Raj Singh, presided over the function and Mr Manu Vashisht, music director, PMV studio, and Mrs Sushma Kaushal, a music teacher, judged the contest.

Results of the primary section were: Solo song — Ist Abhinandan, 2nd Astha, 3rd Ankur. Solo dance — Ist Aditi, 2nd Ritika, 3rd Isha. Mono acting-Ist Hardik, 2nd Subah, 3rd Charu. Best composers-Kritiesh and Kritika.

Result of Middle Section:

Solo song-Ist Neera, 2nd Tanuj, 3rd Ruchika. Solo dance- 1st Varun, 2nd Richa, 3rd Manik Instrumental music- Ist Kashish, 2nd Vaneet Jain, 3rd Rahul. Compering- Ist Palak Prabhakar, Extempore- Ist Deepti Sood, 2nd Harjot, 3rd Vanit Soni.

Song and dance contest

A Talent search contest was also held at the Civil Lines branch of Kundan Vidya Mandir for students of classes 1 and 2 here yesterday. The function was presided over by Principal S.C. Saxsena. The music contest included solo song and instrumental music whereas the dance contest included both Indian and Western dances. Compering, too, was part of the contest which was judged by Ms Suman Walia, Ms Aruna and Ms Kalpana Sharma.

The results are as follows:

Class 1: Solo Song: Sresth 1st, Adhyan 2nd. Instrumental Music: Shobit 1st, Tatsam 2nd. Western Dance: Shubham 1st, Purnima 2nd. Folk Dance: Anvi 1st, Nishtha 2nd. Best Comperer went to Pranay.

Class II: Solo Song: Sunayana 1st, Anusha 2nd. Instrumental Music: Muskan 1st, Ribhav 2nd. Western Dance: Sehaj Deep Ist, Meetali 2nd. Folk Dance: Ranvir Ist, Nandini 2nd. Best Comperer went to Ojasvi.

Open classical dance: Svrumia Ist, Purva 2nd, Gayatri 3rd , Appreciation, Chahat.

Dandia raas at Small Wonders

To celebrate Navratras, children of Small Wonders Nursery School had a dandia party at their school here today. Children danced with great passion. Isha, Samarth, Samridhi, Navya, Divyam and Kasrman were selected the best dancers.

Teachers training camp

A 10-day primary teachers training camp held at Multi Purpose Senior Secondary School concluded here today.

Fifty teachers from different primary schools of Ludhiana participated in the camp conducted under the guidance of the Principal of the school, Mr H.K. Mayer.

The resource persons at the camp were Ms Kamaljeet Kaur, English, Ms Tripta Dhanda, Maths, Mr Subash Kumar, Hindi, Ms Sudeep Kaur and Mr Jagdev Singh, Punjabi, Dr Dilpreet Singh, Health, Dr Sushil, Library culture and Prof Balwinder Singh.

Mr Tarsem Banga, Principal, DIET Jagraon, Mr Baldev Singh, DIET Jagraon , Ms Harvinder Kaur, DEO Primary, Ludhiana also visited the camp occasionally. On the concluding day, Mr Tarsem presided over the valedictory function. A report giving out the details of the camp was read.

Concerts finalised

A meeting of the SPIC MACAY, Ludhiana Chapter, was held at Ramgarhia Girls College to finalise the concerts to be held here during the forthcoming lecture-demonstration series and Virasat 2006-07.

The meeting was attended by Mr Ranjodh Singh, Chairperson, SPICMACAY, Ludhiana Chapter, Mr Atul Talwar, Secretary, along with the Ludhiana team and representatives from many schools and colleges.

The following artistes are likely to perform during the Virasat festival: Sangita Das — Odissi dance, Ileana Citaristi — Odissi dance, Ustad Shahid Parvez — sitar, Mrs Shobhna Narayana — Kathak, Pt Rajan, Sajan Mishra — vocalist, Mrs Shruti Sadolokar — Hindustani vocalist, Ustad Wasifudin Dagar — Drupad, Nizami brothers — qawwali, Pt Hariparshad Churasiya — flute, Pt Birju Maharaj — Kathak, Mrs Geeta Chadhuaaan—Bharatnatyam, Roze Khan — Rajasthani folk music and dance, Sadanam Bala Krishan — Kathak. A puppetry and theatre workshop will also be held.

Seminar ends

A seminar of teachers of primary classes under the guidance of Mr Tarsem Banga and Ms Seema Jain, which was being held at Government Senior Secondary School, PAU, concluded here today.

The problems faced by teachers in teaching English, Mathematics and Hindi were discussed. A two-day computer workshop was also held. Mr Sham Singh Juneja talked about traffic rules while Ms Tripta, a child psychologist, spoke about the correct way of handling children. The Principal of the school, Ms Rajinder Kumari, thanked the teachers and asked them to use new teaching aids to make their lessons more interesting.

Scientist retires today

Ludhiana, September 29
Mr Rakesh Nigam, Scientist-in-charge at Mechanical Engineering Research and Development Organisation (MERADO, parent laboratory CMERI, Durgapur, under the aegis of CSIR) here will retire after putting in 35 years of service.

He has been heading this research and development centre for the past 15 years. A post-graduate in agricultural engineering from the Allahabad University, he had successfully developed and transferred many technologies to industry.

He had been awarded the CSIR Technology Prize for Engineering and Technology in 2003. He had earlier won the NRDC Award 1988 for the development of twin-piston power sprayer ‘ASPEE’. — OC

Chidambaram to preside over PAU convocation

Ludhiana, September 29
Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will be the chief guest at the PAU annual convocation on October 31, 2006. According to the Registrar, 335 graduate and postgraduate degrees will be awarded at the convocation. This will cover the period from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2006.

Nearly 25 students of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University would also be awarded degrees as these students had graduated prior to setting up of the new university on April 21.

World Alzheimer’s Day observed at CMC

The final year students of Christian Medical College (CMC) College of Nursing observed World Alzeimer’s Day in the medical OPD of Christian Medical College and Hospital here today.

Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent, CMCH was the chief guest of the function and Rev J. Noel was the guest of honour. Dr Rajinder Mahal, Professor, College of Nursing welcomed the distinguished guests.

Prof Triza Jiwan, Principal, College of Nursing, unfolded the theme of the day ‘Identify dementia early for better care-no time to lose’ and delivered oration on early identification and prevention of Dementia.

On this occasion, the students also organised an informative skit about the symptoms and treatment of Alzheimer’s patients.

Giving more information about the disease, Dr Arvind Sharma, lecturer in department of psychiatry, said that patients of this disease started suffering from memory loss. They forgot everything about their lives and did not even remember the basic details about themselves like place of living, daily chores like having taken bath or taking meals. In extreme cases, the patients fail to recognise their family members, close relatives and friends. This kind of condition might lead to severe circumstances.

In his lecture, Dr Arun Sood, counsellor at CMCH said that it was very important to lend a helping hand to such patients. “We need to be more patient while dealing with patients of Alzeimer’s disease.

There are certain safety measures which should be taken by their relatives like there should be bare minimum furniture in the room of the patient, their room should have a big wall clock and calendars because such patient even forget the concept of day and night. At the same time, the patient needs to carry an I-card in his or her pocket.”

An exhibition was also put up by M.Sc. (Nursing) final year students on the dementia.

Other activities by nursing students to follow in days to come included workshop on Alzheimer’s disease, medical quiz by paediatric group, public meeting at Field Ganj by community health nursing group and public meeting at Jamalpur by maternal and child health group, said the principal of the college.

Swimming championship begins

Vibhor Mundepi, a student of Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, won three titles on the opening day of the Ludhiana District Swimming Championship, which began at the Municipal Corporation swimming pool, Rakh Bagh, here today.

In the boys group III, Vibhor won top honours in 100 m breaststroke and wrapped up the title in the 100 m breaststroke in the group I. Later, he went on to win the 100 m breaststroke event in the senior men’s section.

Earlier, Ms Amrit Gill, SDM, Ludhiana East, inaugurated the three-day championship in which a large number of swimmers in different age categories are taking part.

Results: Boys group III- 100m breaststroke — Asdhiraj Sharma 1, Rishab Batra 2 and Sikandh Mehta 3; boys group II- 100 m breaststroke — Abhishek Vats 1, Harsharan Singh 2 and Alamdeep 3; girls group II- 100 breaststroke — Chiranjeev Kaur 1, Suhpam Preet Kaur 2 and Shareen Kang 3.

Table tennis meet

Anushka and Bhumika, both students of the local Alpine International School, came out triumphant in the semifinals of the cadet girls’ section of the Ludhiana District Table Tennis Tournament being played at Shastri Hall of Guru Nanak Sports Complex here on Friday.

Anushka fought a pitched battle against Kritika before romping home victorious 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11 and 11-3, while Bhumika outplayed Jasmine 11-7, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-3 to secure berths in the title clash match.

In the cadet boys’ section, Jassal from Sat Paul Mittal School and Abhaydeep Singh from Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, won their respective matches to advance into the semifinals.

Results: cadet girls (quarterfinals): Kritika b Aakti; Anushka b Kriti; Jasmine b Priya; and Bhumika b Shipika. Semifinals: Anushka b Kritika and Bhumika b Jasmine.
