City Centre case: sale stopped
Fresh agreement to be signed

The Punjab Government today stopped the sale of property at the controversial Ludhiana City Centre with immediate effect. The project will, however, carry on and construction work will not stop.

The General Secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, today demanded the registration of a case against the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, Local Bodies Minister, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, and the owner of Today Homes, the firm which has won the contract to build the controversial City Centre at Ludhiana.

Improvement Trust deals to be examined
Patiala, September 15
The Punjab Government has decided to examine all decisions of the Improvement Trusts of the state by way of which they entered into agreements with private entrepreneurs to develop residential, commercial and other projects.

Villagers gherao DLF officials

Farmers of seven villages whose land was being acquired for a special economic zone (SEZ) here today gheraoed officials of the DLF, a private company, who went to collect water samples in the area. A large number of women also participated in the gherao.

Paving the way for the constitution of an independent vigilance commission, the state Assembly today passed the Punjab State Vigilance Commission Bill 2006 and 10 other Bills, including those on amendments to VAT and formation of a municipal fund.

Army peels off MC road

The bureaucratic attitude and miscommunication between the municipal council and the Army authorities has led of a wastage of Rs 15 lakh. About six months ago, the foundation stone of the road was laid in the city with fanfare.

Accused of prostitution, woman expelled from village
Phillaur, September 15
The village panchayat, Atti, headed by Mrs Rajwinder Kaur, alongwith almost entire village, ordered to expel a village woman, Ruby (47,) from the village on the charges of prostitution.

Jobless teachers hold protest

Members of the Unemployed BEd Teachers Union led by their block president of Mukerian, Mr Rajinder Singh, marched from the Civil Hospital to the general bus stand, Mukerian, 52 km from here, this afternoon, to express their resentment over the lathi charge by the police on them at Chandigarh yesterday in which their one lady companion, Sukhjinder Kaur, who belongs to the area, was injured and later was admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

PCMS body for sub-divisions as health dists

The PCMS Association has demanded that the Punjab Government should declare sub-divisions as health districts for effective administrative supervision of health programmes and to improve medicare and to check female foeticide, AIDS, drug addiction and food adulteration.

12 found without tickets on Shatabdi
Jalandhar, September 15
Twelve passengers of the New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express were found travelling without ticket by Mr Rajinder Aggrawal, Special Railway Magistrate (Punjab), during a surprise raid conducted last evening. Most of the passengers alleged that the TTE, Mr Ashok Arora, had taken money and had “adjusted” them but had not given any ticket to them.

Man stabs wife to death

A person today allegedly stabbed to death his wife following an altercation. The incident took place in the area of Dhab Basti falling under the C-Division police station. The deceased has been identified as Rajni (37).
