Live demonstrations of head-neck surgeries

Live demonstrations of head-neck surgeries were given to scores of doctors on the first day of an OTO-FESS workshop organised by the Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, here today.

The workshop started with a lecture on endoscopic CP angle anatomy and its surgical implications by Dr M. Kameswaran, a Padmashri in the field. He said surgeries could reduce the need, hence, the morbidity associated with neurosurgical procedures. Prof A.K. Lahiri from New Delhi delivered a lecture on the role of gene therapy in sensorineural hearing loss and its future prospects.

In the surgical session, Dr Naresh Panda of the Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, PGIMER, demonstrated cochlear implantation on a deaf and mute child, that was followed by mastoid exploration for chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma pathology.

There was a panel discussion on facial nerve disorders moderated by Dr S.C. Sharma, Professor ENT, AIIMS, New Delhi. Various aspects of facial nerve were discussed. Professor Sharma also demonstrated facial nerve decompression in a patient with post-traumatic facial paralysis.

The doctors watching live surgeries on a screen at Lecture Theatre-1, Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, also clarified doubts by putting their queries to the surgeons performing surgeries in the operation theatres.

This was the first OTO-FESS workshop organised by Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery. The Director, PGIMER, Prof K.K. Talwar, inaugurated the workshop while Prof Y.N. Mehra, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of PGIMER, who was the guest of honour, released a souvenir.

Prof A.K. Gupta, a course coordinator for rhinology, made the delegates aware of the various surgeries being performed during this workshop and other academic activities like guest lectures and panel discussions. He also briefed the gathering about the activities of the department and various workshops conducted in the department over the past 10 years.

All set for special pulse polio drive

Mohali, September 15
The supplementary pulse polio day is being observed on September 17 as one case of polio has been reported from Kajheri village falling under Chandigarh.

A special pulse polio campaign was being launched in SAS Nagar district. Polio drops will be given to all children in the age group of 0-5 throughout the district from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 17.

According to the Civil Surgeon, Dr M.S. Toor, a total of 411 booths had been set up in the district. Each booth would be managed by four persons. On September 18 and 19 there would be house-to-house visits to give polio drops to children.

Supervisory teams consisting of SMOs and MOs had also been constituted. Mobile teams and transit teams would look after bus stands and railway stations. NGOs like the Rotary Club and the Lions Club had been requested to assist in the exercise. OC

Chandigarh win by an innings

A century by Amardeep Sonkar (129) and a fine bowling spell by Karan Kherwal (5 for 35) enabled Chandigarh to win their match against Kurukshetra by an innings and 140 runs in the Inter-district Haryana Cricket tournament for the Pataudi Trophy being held at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, near here, today.

Resuming his batting at his overnight score of 50 runs yesterday, Amardeep Sonkar hit 14 fours in his knock of 129 runs. He was well-supported by Yuvraj Anand who scored 47 runs. Chandigarh scored 385 for 7 in 90 overs. Sanjay Dhull and Shiv Saini got 2 wickets each for the Kurukshetra side.

Kurukshetra started their second innings on a disastrous note. They lost their 5 wickets cheaply. Satinder Singh scored 55 runs and Abhijeet scored 48 runs. Karan Kherwal took five wickets in 10 overs at the cost of 35 runs.

Chandigarh will play its quarter-final match against Bhiwani at Bhiwani on September 17 and 18.

Puneet helps Shishu Niketan reach final

An all-round performance by Puneet Rana (40 n.o. and 3 for 25) enabled Shishu Niketan, Sector 22, register a three-wicket victory over DAV School, Sector 15, in the semifinals of the third Molly Carver high school cricket tournament at St Stephen’s School in Togan, near here, today.

In the 25 overs-a-side match, Shishu Niketan won the toss and elected to field.

DAV scored 102 runs before their innings folded up in 20.5 overs. Rozal scored a strokeful 54, which contained eight fours, while Naresh Joshi took 2 wickets for 9 runs.

Chasing a target of 103, Shishu Niketan were served well by Puneet, who hit six boundaries, while Gursahib Singh captured 2 wickets for 18 runs. Shishu Niketan would lock horns with Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, in the final of the tournament, being organised by the D.P. Azad Academy, on September 17.

Brief scores: DAV-15: 102 in 20.5 overs (Rozal 54, Puneet Rana 3 for 25, Naresh Joshi 2 for 9); Shishu Niketan: 106 for 7 in 22.5 overs (Puneet Rana 40 not out, Gursahib Singh 2 for 18).

Preeti lost to Rajwinder 3-21, 11-21 while Rajwinder and Harpreet registered a 21-5, 21-3 win against Kamal and Sonam Sharma in doubles.

ADMINISTRATION
 

Vivek Atrey is principal spokesman

The Chandigarh Administration has decided that Mr Vivek Atray, Director, Public Relations, will be the Principal spokesman.

He will be authorised to speak on behalf of the Administration. This will also help in better coordination between departments and the media on important matters.

When Mr Atray is not available, Public Relations Officers Vineet Punia and Rupesh Kumar will act as spokesmen.
