School
tournaments being played on unfit grounds Chandigarh, August 30 The inter-school hockey competitions for boys and girls under the categories of 14, 17 and 19, being conducted at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-D, grounds, tell the sorry state of affairs. In the ongoing hockey competitions, it was pathetic to see the dilapidated condition of the ground where the outfield is full of pits and appeared more like a paddy field with shorn-off crop. This correspondent came across five such players who got either their ankles twisted or rashes on knees. The worst part was that the ball was hardly visible in the overgrown grass. The referees too were not in proper sports attire. When
the school Principal, Mrs Kushwinder Sharma, under whose supervision the
tournament is being held, was contacted, she said, “I don’t have the
proper vision of the things because of my ill health. I am dependent on
my physical education staff only who give me feedback about it.
Moreover, the overgrown field was cut just two days before with the help
of a tractor and I think ours is the best ground among schools. But if
it was still not favorable to hold the tournament, then this was for the
organisers to see. They could have shifted the venue.” According to
experts, this is the stage when a player’s base is developed and after
playing in these kinds of conditions, it will be quite impossible for
them to play on the astroturf. The city possesses ample infrastructure
to hold hockey tournaments like Sector 42 astroturf and Sector 18
stadium, which are available for free of cost. When Mr J.S. Basota,
Secretary of the Sports Committee, who is responsible for conducting all
school-level tournaments, was apprised of the situation, he said, “It
is surely a matter of concern. I have just rejoined the office after a
long leave. Since these things have been brought to my notice, I will
personally look into the matter.” Mr Basota said initially they
approached the Joint Director , Sports, Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, for granting
permission to hold the tournaments on the Sector 42 astroturf, but the
restricted timings they were offered were not conducive to hold the
tournaments without affecting children’s studies. “Actually, we
are conducting the inter-school tournaments in six other disciplines too
and our aim was that more and more number of children should participate
without getting their study schedule disturbed. But now that if the
conditions under which the hockey tournament is being conducted are not
favourable we will again approach the Director, Sports, to let us use
the astroturf at Sector 42.” Mr Sidhu, when contacted, said, “Their
officials approached us long ago and at that time the astroturf had
already been booked for the Air Force hockey meet. So, I told them that
the turf is free from 1pm to 3 pm only. Now, the turf is all theirs for
all the time. If they submit a request letter in this respect it will
surely be entertained.” |

the mediapersons at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today, the Director,
Sports Department, U T, Mr I S Sandhu, said, “In the tournament being

Federation (AIFF), a total of 16 teams from different states will

the participation of state teams, the matches will be played in
accordance with the international laws of the game. Even the umpires and
the technical officials will be appointed by the federation”. “To
check the overage menace, a board of two to three doctors will be
constituted. All teams will be subjected to medical test and the
decision of the board will be final on the issue,” said Mr Sandhu. The teams will be divided into four pools. The participating teams are (Group A) CFA, HP, Haryana, Chhattisgarh.
