First Lady gives gifts to poor children
Chandigarh, August 30 On closer examination one saw smiling faces of about 20 children, 25 women and as many as 40 men. The special guest, Jean Rodrigues, had been kind enough to give away items of utility to them, namely shoes, saris and shirts. The labour community at the school who is engaged in the second phase of the school's construction were in need of these essential items. The Durga Das Foundation's social workers’ gesture was a most touching tribute to the hard work of those who lead a marginalized life. For Ram Prasad, who has worked in more than 17 cities on various construction sites, he was never more than just a labourer. For the first time he has been given respect and treated with kindness. The Lady Governor spent considerable time with the group, asking them about any other difficulties that they were facing in the city. She particularly enjoyed talking to the children, who also took the opportunity to share with her what they were learning at the Strawberry Fields World School's special morning classes which were being held for them. Accompanied by the Director, Atul Khanna, Principal Aman Sidhu and the Coordinator Angelina Bhagat, she took a conducted tour of the school, peeping into the different class rooms. As she went around the academic wing, she could not but exclaim: "I did not know schools like this existed in India. The walls and empty classrooms too exude an energy that is so vibrant and infectious. I can well imagine what the place must be with teachers and students engaged in active dialogue and activity." Mr Atul Khanna said: "The school has a social responsibility towards the lesser privileged too and we are glad that not just the management but even our students understand that. We take it as a challenge to nurture the philanthropic spirit in them as well. To be able to give something of yourself is perhaps the hardest thing to do. But we hope that we will be able to contribute in raising a generation that is not only bright and successful but humane as well." |
