City girl bags Felix Scholarship

Ms G. Deepika, a resident of Akashpuri has been selected for prestigious Felix Scholarship by the Student Services Directorate, University of Reading, Whiteknights, for getting higher degree (PhD) in Food Biosciences. The award will cover the full cost of her annual composition fees and make a payment direct to her to cover all living expenses.

Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, Deepika in excitement said she felt on the top of the world when she learnt that she had been selected.

“I would be getting a package of Rs 20 lakhs per annum plus the living and maintenance expenses. Belonging to a middle-class family, my parents could never spend such huge amount on my studies. I will have to study in UK for minimum three years,” said Deepika.

Besides, this scholarship also covers a return airfare between India and Britain and includes extra allowances for books and warm clothing, the precise details of which will be provided at the beginning of term.

Deepika would not be allowed to apply for any other scholarship which would interfere with the tenure of Felix Scholarship. Deepika said, “At the end of period of study, I am expected to return to India with a signing declaration to this effect.”

Deepika, daughter of a retired bank official, said she owed her success to Almighty, parents and loved ones.

She had applied for the same through a scholarship website on Internet in February 2006. She was called for an interview in Bangalore in June. She happens to be the only North Indian to get this award.

She said she was a bit scared to go to the new place.

“But I am sure it would be for my betterment. It is difficult to leave your loved ones for three years but I feel emotions should not block one’s vision.”

I-Day celebrated by orphans

Ludhiana, August 16
The Nishkam Seva Ashram, an NGO, celebrated Independence Day with orphans and mentally challenged children here yesterday in a school-cum-orphanage at Lalton.

Small students performed several items like songs, skits, and poem recitation which were both entertaining and educative. Chairman of Nishkam Sarwan Kumar and children together hoisted the Tricolour.

Members of the Lion Club present there lauded the work done by the Nishkam.

Celebrations: Independence Day was celebrated by shopkeepers, Kup Road, Malout. The Tricolour was unfurled by the president of the Nagar Panchayat.

Addressing the people he said that their prime concern is to develop the market area. The shopkeepers demanded proper drains along their shops for proper flow of water. They also wanted the two senior secondary schools of Maloud to introduce science stream.

Rotary Club: Independence Da y was celebrated by the Rotary Club, Ludhiana, at Rotary Bhavan, Sarabha Nagar, here yesterday. J.K. Sethi unfurled the National Flag and delivered the message of fraternity and national integration. Students of Nirdosh, a school for mentally challenged presented a patriotic song . Students of Saraswati Modern School, Civil Lines, also performed a colourful cultural programme comprising songs, dances and skits. Janmashtami was also celebrated by this school that presented an item related to the life of Lord Krishna.

The management, staff and students of the Guru Nanak Model Sr Sec School celebrated Independence Day with enthusiasm.
Mrs Bhagwant Kaur, chief patron, unfurled the National Flag. Mr B.S. Pangali, vice-president, Mr Rajinder Singh Khalsa, Mr Bhupinder Singh, Mr Harjiwan Pal Singh Gill, Mrs Urmil Sood, Principal, along with the staff members and students offered tributes to the martyrs.

Flying Cats lands in city, first batch starts

The first batch of the Flying Cats — a training school for grooming, aviation and tourism — started here today. Hi-tech education being imparted here through laptops, internet and V-sat screens (video conferencing). A panel of celebrities shall be grooming the students via this technology.

The final training will be carried out in Singapore under a tie-up with the Singapore Tourism.

Aspiring students of aviation, hospitality and tourism industry have stepped into the hi-tech era and increasing number of students are opting for such alternate careers over the traditional career opportunities.

The Flying Cats has been launched by Ms Priyanka Khosla, who is the MD of the training school and also a director with the INIFD.

Twenty centres have been launched all over India on an identical pattern in this year. The first-batch students were welcomed by the centre manager, Ms Aman Bhatia.

Mr Abhinav Shukla, who was given the title of Mr Best Potential Gladrags Manhunt 2004 and Best Physique Grasim 2005, was also present for the inaugural session. The students were briefed about all the nine modules they would be studying during their course.

Aurobindo’s birth anniversary celebrated

Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management here celebrated the 134th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo yesterday. The college had organised a paper reading contest to mark the occasion. The topics of the contest were related to the life and philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, Indian culture and philosophy, India’s Independence — historical perspective, economic and social transformation of India and India of my dreams.

The secretary of Sri Aurobindo Society, Mr Manmohan Bamba, was the chief guest. Prof V.P. Gaur, former Principal, SCD Government College, Ludhiana was the guest of honour. Dr D.B. Sharma, Director, Sat Paul Mittal School, and Dr Vijay Asdhir, Principal, Kamla Lohtia SD College, were among the other members of the panel of judges. Mr Bamba spoke to the students about Sri Aurobindo’s life and his teachings and about the mother.

Aakansha Verma of B.Com II stood first in the competition; Sahibpreet of B.Com I was declared second; Darshpreet Singh of B.Com I was adjudged third, and one consolation prize was given to Goria Mangla of B.Com II. Dr Prem Kumar appreciated the efforts of the participants and Col P.S. Choudhry, GM (Admn and Edu.), presented the vote of thanks.

Students bring laurels: The Department of Mathematics of SCD Government College, Ludhiana, added another feather in the cap when two students of M.Sc. first year bagged first and 3rd positions in the university annual examination conducted by Panjab University. Kavita Gupta topped the university securing 433 marks out of 500. In all three students got more than 80 per cent marks, six students got above 75 per cent and 29 above 60 per cent marks. While giving the details about the results, the Principal of the college, Dr Malkiat Singh, said that the Department of Mathematics of SCD Government College, Ludhiana was one of the best department in the region. Recently one of the teachers of the department, Prof Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu, had been awarded Ph.D degree by the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

Janmashtami celebrations: Janamashtami was celebrated with devotional zeal and fervour in the college campus of Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women here today. Mr Satpal Gosai was the chief guest who was given rousing reception in the college premises. Students mesmerised the audience with captivating performance of devotional songs, dances, skits and group songs. The immortal love-lore of Radha-Krishna came alive before the audience.

Independence Day celebrated

Independence Day was celebrated in BCM School, Basant City, Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana yesterday. Mr Kartar Singh Grewal, ex- sarpanch of village Daad, Ludhiana, unfurled the National Flag and took the salute . Mr Satyanandji Munjal, chairman of Hero cycle and President of BCM Institutions was the chief guest at the function.

Students participated enthusiastically in various cultural items — patriotic songs, mass P T show, bhangra, giddha etc . BCM School band-show was the main attraction of the celebrations. The sacrifices of the freedom fighters were remembered.

Kids told about I-Day: Maple Bear Canadian Play Way and Nursery School celebrated the Independence day at its campus with great enthusiasm and fervor here yesterday. Fancy dress competition was held. Kids came dressed like Maharani Jhansi Rani, Mahatama Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sukhdev and Rajguru etc.

The Kids saluted the National Flag and danced to the tune of ‘Ma tujhe salaam’!, Nana muna rahi huan! and Rang De Basanti! Principal Mrs Veena Aggarwal distributed cake, sweets to the children. She also explained to the kids about the importance of this day.

Competitions at school: Children of Small Wonders Nursery School, Sangat Road, Civil Lines, Ludhiana celebrated Independence Day and Janamashtmi here. To mark the independence day school arranged various competitions. A group of children sang ‘Sare jahan se achcha.” Colouring competition “colour the flag” was organized.

Flag making activity was the main attraction for the children. Children made beautiful flags with the help of their teachers. They raised slogans “Jai Hind” and “Vande Matram” while holding their self made flags. Principal Neeti Dewan told the students about the significance of the flag.

A corner of the school was decorated for Janamashtmi. A “Jhoola” decked up with flowers was the main attraction for all the kids. Boys and girls dressed up in colorful attires presented an attractive dance. Teachers played hide and seek with the kids symbolic of Kanahiya’s playing hide and seek with Gopis.

Patriotic speeches: India’s Independence Day was celebrated with a lot of fervour atTagore Public School here yesterday. The cherished day was presided over by Mr Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal, Registrar Cooperative Societies. He was accorded a warm welcome by Principal Mrs Amrita Gabhar, staff and students. The chief guest started the day’s programme by unfurling the National Flag and the whole school joined in singing the National Anthem.

This ceremony was followed by a lively marchpast by the four houses of the school. Principal welcomed the chief guest and highlighted the importance of this historic day besides exhorting the students to inbibe a true patriotic spirit.

A colourful cultural bonanza, full of patriotic zeal and fervour regaled the audience and infused in them feelings of pride, bravery and reverence for the motherland.

Speeches full of patriotism were given out. The mood was festive and the spirit nationalistic. The chief guest S.R. Dhaliwal appreciated the show and encouraged the students to follow the footsteps of great leaders. Mementoes were presented to the dignataries.

Association hails award to Sandhu

The Association of Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Punjab, hailed the decision of the state govt to give the State Award to Mr Harpreet Singh Sandhu, Senior Advocate-General.

In a statement, Mr Rajinder Sharma, president of Association, said Mr Harpreet Singh Sandhu had been working as Senior Advocate-General for many years and had done well.

He said that the award which had been given to him by the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, yesterday had not only brought laurels to him but also to the city.

Police remand for three

A Duty Magistrate today remanded to one-day police custody to three persons who were caught by Khanna police yesterday on charges of carrying illegal arms and ammunition to Issru political rally.

The accused include Palwinder Singh of Shatrana who was released last year after completing a jail sentence of over 13 years in TADA case of killing 6 persons, Jaspal Singh of Dasuha an ex-SSF leader and presently senior vice president Khalsa Dal along with one Malkit Singh , a mason from Barnala.

The accused have been booked under sections, 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms Act. The recovered weapons include a .12 bore and .315 bore guns and a .32 bore revolver along over 40 live cartridges.

Pensioners rue reimbursement rules

Under the Punjab Government reimbursement rules, a pensioner suffering from a chronic disease and an outdoor patient is required to get a medical certificate from one of the Government Medical Colleges located at Patiala, Faridkot, Amritsar, PGI, Chandigarh, or AIIMS, Delhi, to claim medical reimbursement.

Pensioners of Ludhiana district are required to visit Medical College, Patiala, to get the certificate. They have to visit Patiala two or three times to get certificate which, for an octogenarian pensioner, it is very difficult.

Earlier, the pensioners were required to get the certificates by appearing before the medical board constituted at the district level. The pensioners demand that the previous practise be restored.

Mahajan Juniors emerge cricket champs

Powered by the all-round display by Parul Mehndiratta ( 3 for 6 and 37 runs) and an unbeaten innings of 33 runs by his brother, Paras Mehndiratta, the Mahajan Juniors XI scored an emphatic six-wicket victory over the Super Club to win the 10th Chaman Lal Malhotra Cricket Tournament (u-14).

The tourney was organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at Arya College grounds here today.

In the final with 40 overs allotted to each team, the Super Club were all out for 135 runs in 31.2 overs.

Abhishek Talwar played a fine innings of 51 runs with the help of three boundaries. Other leading scorers were Kunal (13), Harnoor (8), Arjit (16) and Mrinal (7).

For the Mahajan Juniors, Parul Mehndiratta was the pick of bowlers grabbing three wickets by conceding just six runs. Subhodh captured two wickets for 28 runs while Chirag and Arpit claimed one wicket each.

The Mahajan Juniors made the required runs in 33 overs after losing four wickets.

The Mehndiratta brothers, students of SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School, Circular Road, excelled with the bat.

Parul made 37 which included two hits to fence while Paras remained unconquered on 33. Money Pandey, Sukhraj and Nitish contributed 12, 8 and 13 runs, respectively.

For the Super Club, Kunal (1 for 13), Harnoor (1for 19) and Mrinal (1for 20) were the wicket takers. Parula for his outstanding performance was declared the man of the match.

KVM School in final

Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, defeated Rashtriya Bal Vidya Mandir School by 62 runs to advance into the final of the Punjab Schools Zonal Cricket Tournament (u-16) being playd at Punjab Agricultural University ground here today.

Rashtriya Bal Vidya Mandir School won the toss and elected to field. In the stipulated 20 overs, KVM School scored 124 runs for the loss of two wickets. Rameez Kumar made 56 while Shivam Sharma 27 and Geetansh Khera remained unbeaten on 18 runs. For the Rashtriya Bal Vidya Mandir School, Gagandeep took one wicket for 17 runs.

In reply, Rashtriya Bal Vidya Mandir School were bowled out for 62 runs in 16 overs. Except for Anil (17) and Gagandeep (15) no other batsman was able to put up a brave face before the accurate bowling by the KVM bowlers. Shivam Sharma took three wickets for nine runs while Shubham and Gagandeep captured two wickets each conceding 8 and 12 runs, respectively.

Ludhiana B lads hockey champions

Ludhiana B proved their supremacy over Jalandhar when they pipped them 5-2 and clinch the title in the Miri Piri Punjab State Sub Junior Hockey Tournament which concluded at the Satguru Partap Singh Astroturf stadium, Bhaini Sahib, near here today. The issue was resolved through tie-breaker as the two teams were tied one-all at the end of the regular period.

Ludhiana B shot into the lead in the 17th minute through Ranjit Singh they enjoyed the lead till the 54th minute when Jalandhar lads restored parity throguh penalty stroke conversion by Amanjot Singh.

As the stipulated period failed to produce any result, the tie-breaker was applied in which Ludhiana B players came out triumphant. For the winners, Ranjeet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Navdeep Singh and Rajinder Singh sounded the board while for Jalandhar, only Amanjot Singh found the target.

Earlier, in the semi finals, Jalandhar beat Ropar 3-1 while Ludhiana B prevailed over Amritsar 2-1 to set up the title clash. Mr Hardeep Singh Dhillon, IG, Jalandhar Police range, and vice president, Indian Hockey Federation, Mr A.S. Rai, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana and Mr Ramandeep Singh Grewal, Deputy Director, Sports, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana gave away prizes to the winners. OC
