Banda Bahadur Chair in varsity sought

Ludhiana, August 15
Bairagi Maha Mandal, Punjab, today asked the state government to set up a Chair in one of the state universities in the name of Bairagi Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. This step would go a along way in apprising the younger generation of supreme sacrifice made by this valiant warrior.

Presiding over a state committee meeting of the mandal here last evening, Mr Krishan Kumar Bawa, president of the body and chairman of Punjab Housefed, observed that hundreds of years ago, the saint soldier (Banda Bahadur) had brought a revolutionary change in the Indian society by giving ownership rights to cultivators and it would be a grave mistake if his legacy was not preserved.

The meeting discussed in detail the elaborate programme for celebrating the 336th birth anniversary of Banda Bahadur at a function here on October 16.

Mr Baldev Bawa, speaking at the occasion, urged the government to consider victories achieved by Banda Bahadur over Mogul rulers as historical events and a documentary be made to place on record the deeds of the great martyr, who avenged the killing of two sons of Guru Gobind Singh at the hands of the then tyrannical rulers.

Mr Bawa nominated Ms Kanchan Bawa as chairperson of the women wing of Bairagi Maha Mandal, Punjab, during the meeting.

Prominent among others present at the meeting were Mr Hari Das Bawa, Mr Kartar Bawa, Mr Rajiv Bawa, Mr Balwinder Bawa, Mr Surjit Singh Bawa, Ms Neelam Bawa, Mr Nand Kishore Bawa, Mr Surinder Bawa, Ms Kulwinder Kaur Bawa, Ms Rajni Bawa, Mr Neeraj Bawa, Mr Gurnam Singh Bawa, Mr Amarjit Singh Bawa and Mr Charanjit Bawa.

I-Day celebrated with fervour

The 60th Independence Day of India was celebrated in patriotic spirit by students of different colleges and schools here today. Patriotic songs were sung by the students.

Kundan Vidya Mandir: KVM students celebrated the spirit of freedom with fervour. A prabhat pheri was held in the school campus, which was decorated in tricolour. The chief guest on the occasion was Mr Ashwani Kumar, secretary, Shri Kundan Lal Trust. He was accorded a warm welcome by Principal Mr S.C.Saxena, who introduced the chief guest to all. Mr Ashwani Kumar inspected the guard of honour. Dr Inderjit Gill Vashisht gave vote of thanks. On the occasion, the school KVM ‘Reporter Independence’ issue was released by the chief guest.

Bhartiya Vidya Mandir: Janmashtmi and Independence Day was celebrated in BVM, Shishu Vatika here today. A fancy dress and cultural programme was organised to mark the occasion. A stage performance on 'Vande Mataram' was appreciated by all. The importance of both occasions was told to the students by Ms Indu Bala, Principal. Appreciation awards were also presented to the students.

Dr Ranjit International School: Independence Day was celebrated by students of Dr Ranjit International School here today. Children of the school welcomed the chief guest Mr Ranjan Das Thakur. He hoisted the flag and inspired the children. Patriotic songs were sung by the students. The importance of the day was told to the students by Principal Kuldeep Singh.

BVM Chandigarh Road: The students of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Sector 39, Chandigarh Road, performed at a colourful function on the eve of Independence Day. Mr O.P.Sabharwal, member, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Trust, graced the occasion with his presence. After the flag hoisting ceremony, students sang National Anthem and chief guest shared experiences of 60 years of Independence with audience and gave the message of“Self building-nation building .” The students sang patriotic songs and recited poems.The group dance was performed on the song ‘Dulhan Chali’. In the end, Ms Ranjit Kaur, school Principal, proposed the vote of thanks.

GMT Senior Secondary Public School: GMT Senior Secondary Public School celebrated Independence Day with great enthusiasm. Dr H.S.Sidhu, Principal of GMT College of Education, hoisted the flag. National song was sung by the students. Various cultural and colourful items were performed by them.Tributes were paid to the freedom fighters.

BCM Arya Model School: Gaiety, fun and enthusiasm marked the 60th Independence Day celebrations in BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here today where the school was the hub of activities on this occasion.Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The galaxy of dignitaries present on the occasion included president of the school, Mr Satyanand Munjal, and other members of the management. the guard of honour was presented by NCC Cadets. The parade for the march past included Contingent of the NCC Boys, girls and bag pipers. The chief guest unfurled and saluted the tricolour . Students displayed their skills through mass synchronisation of PT exercises, dumbbell and lazium show.

Ryan International School: The tricolour was unfurled at Ryan International School as the Independence Day celebrations marked the day. The school band, the school cabinet and the students of the sports club in all regalia welcomed Col Piyush Aggarwal, Commanding Officer, 49 Air Defense. He was the chief guest. The school organised a small cultural programme to mark the occasion. Colonel Aggarwal was all praises for the efforts put in by the students and stressed on the importance of being disciplined and the value of freedom. Speaking on the occasion, Principal Ms Jaishree Gupta mentioned that the need of hour was to make children realise the value of freedom and the necessity to maintain it.

USPC Jain Public School: USPC Jain Public School, Chandigarh Road, here celebrated Independence Day with great zeal and zest. Mr M.P. Jain (general secretary), Ms Yachana Chawla (Principal ) and Mr Sham Lal Jain hoisted the flag with pride. The school band along with the students presented the guard of honour. The cultural programme included dance, drama and patriotic songs. Speeches were made and the function ended with the National Anthem.

SDP institutions: The SDP College for Women here celebrated Independence Day here today in the college campus amidst great fervour, gaiety and Joy. In this celebration, the college was joined by all SDP Educational institutions viz SDP Senior Secondary School, Basti Jodhewal, SDP, Senior Secondary School, Hazuri Road and Mr Om Parkash Gupta, SDP, Model Senior Secondary School, Quilla Mohalla. More than 5,000 students of SDP institutions marched through the streets raising slogans ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ singing patriotic songs and holding tri-colour flags in their hands. they entered the college campus where they were welcomed by the college band. Mr Balraj Kumar Bhasin, president, SDP Sabha, and college management committee was the chief-guest on the occasion. He was accorded a warm welcome by Principal Veena Maan, Director S. Verma, members of management and heads of all SDP Institutions.

Master Tara Singh College: Independence Day was celebrated with great patriotic zeal and fervour by the students of MTS College here today. The proceedings of the programme were initiated with the recitation of college shabad ‘deh shiva var mohe ihe.’ Mr J.S.Arora, patron, electronic media, was the chief guest who unfurled the flag. He took the salute from NCC, NSS and the Youth Club units who marched elegantly to the pulsating tune of the band. Cultural items comprising patriotic songs and choreography added to the fervour. Principal Madanjit Kaur Sahota welcomed the chief guest, the members of the managing committee and dignitaries from various walks of life. She stressed upon the need to make efforts to serve the country as envisaged by the martyrs and freedom fighters.

I-Day fervour at vet varsity

Independence day was celebrated at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, with great enthusiasm.
Mr D.S. Bains, Vice-Chancellor, unfurled the flag and inspected NCC cadets of the College of Veterinary Science. He paid tributes to martyrs.

Tributes paid to martyrs

Amloh, August 15
Independence Day at the Subdivision level was celebrated with fervour at the grain market here today. Mr Arshdeep Singh Thind, SDM, Amloh, unfurled the tricolour and took the salute at a march past presented by NCC cadets and scouts.It was followed by a cultural programme organised by elementary, high and secondary schools of Amloh and Mandi gobindgarh area.

Most students were dressed in traditional Punjabi dress. Departments of animal husbandry, agriculture and forest also participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, the SDM paid tributes to martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country.

Rally against foeticide

Students and staff of Green Land Senior Secondary Public School organised a rally today against foeticide and dowry. The rally was flagged off from by the SSP. Five thousand students, led by the chairman-cum-Director of the school, Mr Rajesh Rudhra. The students carried banners depicting the doom of the country if foeticide goes unabated.

KVM boys storm into final

Bharat Malhotra's unbeaten innings of 71 runs and equally important bowling spells by Keshav (2 for 15) and Lalit Malhotra (2 for 12) steered Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, to 63-run win over Sargodha National Public School, Field Ganj, in the semifinal of the Punjab Zonal Schools Cricket Tournament (u-19) played at Bachan Singh Academy ground, village Balloke, Haibowal Khurd here today.

Batting first, KVM School scored 150 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Bharat Malhotra remained unbeaten on 71 runs. Sanchit Gosain made 18 while Lalit Malhotra contributed 25 runs and Shanky Khera made 14. For Sargodha National Public School, Rahul captured two wickets for 20 runs while Kunal took one for 25.

In reply, Sargodha National Public School could make 87 runs. Only Manjot and Atul reached double figures, making 20 and 13 runs, respectively, while Gurpreet scored 9 runs. For KVM School, Keshav and Lalit claimed two wickets each while Ramit Kapoor and Vishesh Bector took one wicket each.

In the u-17 section, Kundan Vidya Mandir School beat SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School, Circular road, by 30 runs to enter the semifinals.

Batting first, KVM School made 122 for 9 with main contributions coming through Geetansh Khera (51) and Shubham Sharma (11). Shubham of SAN Jain School was the most successful bowler grabbing two wickets for 14 runs, while Paramjit, Baljeet and Vikram took one wicket each.

SAN Jain School's innings folded at 92 runs. Dinesh and Paramjit made 24 and 12 runs, respectively. For KVM School, Abhinav Gupta and Gagandeep took two wickets each for 9 and 10 runs, respectively. Shivam Sharma and Shubham scalped one victim each.

Amritsar, Ludhiana B enter semifinals

Ludhiana, August 15Teams of Amritsar and Ludhiana B scored emphatic victories in their respective quarterfinal encounters to grab berths in the semifinals on the penultimate day of the Miri Piri Punjab State Sub Junior Hockey Tournament being played at the Satguru Partap Singh Astro-Turf Stadium, Bhaini Sahib, near here, today.

They joined Jalandhar in the semifinals who thrashed Gurdaspur yesterday to secure a place in the last four stage.

The fourth place in the semifinals will be decided after the match to be played between Ludhiana A and Ropar. The semifinals are slated for tomorrow.

In the quarterfinals, Amritsar trounced Tarn Taran A 6-1. The winners were leading 3-1 at half time. Jagir Singh, Rupinder Singh and Ramandeep Singh scored two goals each for Amritsar while Mandeep Singh was the lone scorer for the losers.

In another quarterfinal encounter, Ludhiana B made mincemeat of Faridkot 9-0. Gupreet Singh contributed four goals while Malik Singh and Lakhbir Singh found the target twice and Bikram Singh sounded the board once.
