St John’s overall champions in Edmund Rice meet

Hosts St John’s High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, emerged overall champions at the annual Edmund Rice Sports tournament, which concluded at the St John’s ground here today.

The tournament included events of football, badminton, table tennis and basketball. St John’s were convincingly victorious in football and table tennis, thus winning the overall championship.

Football

St John’s High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, registered a victory over St Columba’s team, New Delhi, by 2-1 in a keenly contested match.

St John’s lads mounted pressure on St Columba’s defence in the very first minute of the game. St John’s defender Narayan moved to the forward line and sent the ball towards Prakash Punia, who made no mistake in scoring a superb goal by a powerful grounder.

Soon after conceding an early goal, St Columba’s lads adopted cautious approach and framed a few good moves. Nitin of St Columba’s scored an equaliser in the 18th minute of the play off a pass from Sujit.

Both teams were one all at the breather. On the resumption of the play after the lemon break, both teams framed good moves and raided each other’s defence line to score a goal.

In the 47th minute of the play, Gurbaz Singh Chana of St John’s School dribbled past two defenders of St Columba’s and gave a through pass to Rajat Thakur who took a powerful shot and scored the winning goal for his team.

Badminton

St Joseph College, Nanital, beat St Columba’s School, New Delhi, 3-1 in the final of the Edmund Rice Sports meet.

In the first singles, Aditya (St Columbus) beat Shourin (St Joseph’s) 2-1 (15-21, 21-16, 21-12). In the second singles, Nischal (St Joseph’s) beat Dhananjay (St Columbus) 2-0 (21-6, 21-11).

Doubles: Shourin and Nischal (St Joseph’s) beat Aditya and Dhananjay (St Columba) 2-0 (21-16, 21-15)

Table tennis

The host St John’s High School beat St Columba’s by 3-1

Results: Arjun Ravi Shankar of St Columba’s beat Devjot of St John’s by 3-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-3, 11-8.

Siddharth of St John’s beat Alind Aggarwal by 2-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 4-11

Karan of St John’s beat Archie Beri by 12-10, 11-7, 11-9

Siddharth of St John’s beat Arjun Ravi Shankar by 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-18

Basketball

In the final, St Columba’s, New Delhi beat St Mary’s, Mount Abu, by 33-22. The half time score was 24-08. The top scorer of the winning team was Sujit with 13 points and Tash J. with 10 points for the losers.

At the end of the sports meet the following players were adjudged best players of the tournament.

Basketball: best scorer: Sujit of St Columba’s, New Delhi; best player: Akshit of St Joseph’s, Nainital.

Badminton: best player: Nischal of St Joseph’s, Nainital.

Table tennis: best player: Siddharth of St John’s High School, Chandigarh.

Chess carnival begins

The first Xavier’s Chandigarh Prize Money Children’s Chess Carnival for under-9, under-11 and under-15 boys and girls’ categories commenced at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-C, here today.

Ameek Malhotra, Jagteshwar Singh, Sahil Bhatia, Shirish and Yatin Mittal earned 3 points, while Ravneet, K. Viswanthitha and Jasleen garnered 2 points in U-15 boys and girls’ groups, respectively.

“The tournament is being conducted by the Chandigarh Chess Academy, in which a total of 99 players from Chandigarh and different states like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh are participating,” said Mr Andrew John Gosain, Chairman and founder of St Xavier’s Schools, Chandigarh.

Champions Trophy to be displayed at Fun Republic

Chandigarh, August 15
The local cricket enthusiasts will get the chance to see the ICC Champions Trophy, for which the top ODI teams will vie in October and November, at Fun Republic on August 17 from 11.30 am to 7.30 pm.

Starting from Mohali, where the opening match of the tournament between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be played on October 7, the trophy will be displayed at nine venues in seven cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Kolkata, before finishing up in Bangalore on August 31.

The solid silver trophy, which is designed and manufactured in London, is 18 inch tall and weighs approximately 8 kg. Its approximate value is $ 20,000.

Cricket trials held

Panchkula, August 15
Twentyseven players have been selected for the Panchkula District (U-22) Cricket Team in the trials conducted at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, near here.

The trials, in which a total of 50 players appeared, were conducted by the Panchkula District Cricket Association (affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association).

Mr Sandeep Moudgil, honorary secretary of the association, said the selected players would undergo a one-week coaching camp to compete in the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket Championship (U-22).

The team would play its first match against the Ambala District team on August 21 at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology at Barwala (Panchkula).

The names of selected players are: Mandeep Singla, Sunny Sharma, Pawan Jha, Gaurav Goel, Robin, Gurmail Singh, Ankit Pathela, Tejwinder Gill, Virender Saharan, Harsimar Singh, Jitender Billa, Arvind Rawat, Udham Singh, Amit Tyagi, Nipun Gupta, Roobal Kapil, Kapil Pandey, Simarjeet Singh, Joginder Singh, Parkash Singh, Sashank Gandhi, Amit, Rudev Mani, Sachin Kumar, Karan Malik, Ashutosh Walia and Sachin Garhotra.

Jandpur pip Saini Majra in kabaddi

The Jandpur village team beat Saini Majra village 2.5 points in the 35 kg circle kabaddi on the first day of the Annual Rural Sports meet held at Guru Dronacharya Stadium at Dadu Majra village, here today.

The meet is being organised jointly by the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Guru Gobind Singh Sports Club, Dadu Majra.

Jandpur raiders scored 13 points while Saini Majra lads scored 10.5 points. In the 45 kg circle kabaddi meet, the Gopalpur team beat the Allapur team 20-13 where Gopalpur scored 20 points while the Allapur team could get 13 points only.

Mr Amar Nath, Director , Rural Development and Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh, inaugurated the two-day meet. On this occasion, Mr B.B. Behl, president, Territorial Congress, Chandigarh, and Mr Didar Singh, chairman, Panchayat Samiti, Chandigarh, who were the guests of honour, gave cheque for Rs 5100 each to the club.
