Rural Sports meet gets under way

Chandigarh, August 12
The two-day Rural Sports Meet organised by Azad Sports Society Club got off to a flying start at Dronacharya Sports Stadium, Dadu Majra village, here today.

“This annual meet is organised in the memory of village’s national kabaddi player Jasmer Singh ‘Jassa’, who died in a road accident seven years ago. Our aim is to refrain the youth from drugs and other social vices and to channel their energy in the right direction,” said club president Ravinder Singh.

A large number of people from the surrounding villages turned up to witness various events — the most spectacular being the dog race.

Gholia brothers’ dog “Black Water” won them Rs 2,100 by finishing first in the race. Davinder’s dog “Indian Angrez” finished second and bagged Rs 1,500, while Jaswinder’s “Moti Lal” and Rulwinder’s “Chitra Mor” finished third and fourth, respectively.

They won a prize money of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, respectively.

Punjabi style kabaddi was another attraction in which contests in various weight categories were held.

In under-42 kg category, Matordan team emerged winners, while Chadian team finished runners-up.

Himachal club, Minerva enter semifinals

Himachal Cricket Club and Minerva Cricket Academy sailed into the semifinals from group A of the first Tri-City Twenty-20 Cricket Tournament at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Sector 3 here today.

In the last match of the day, Bedi Cricket Club beat Gurfateh Cricket Club by two wickets.

Minerva Cricket Academy defeated ICL-XI by six wickets, whereas Himachal CC trounced Sunil-XI by eight wickets.

Batting first, ICL piled up 154 for four in 20 overs. ICL’s wicketkeeper-batsman Bhageshwar Bisht scored unbeaten 65, hitting two sixes and 10 fours.

Sandeep Singh (30) and Mandeep (26) were the other main contributors. Parveen Sharma got two wickets for 27 runs.

In reply, Minerva CA made 155 for four in 15.4 overs with the help of a fine knock by Sandeep Kohli (86).

Sandeep, who was the highest scorer of the match, hit two sixes and 12 fours.

Amandeep Sonkar and Vipul Sharma made 18 and 17 n.o., respectively. Medium-pacer Ajay Sikka claimed two wickets for 18 runs.

In the second match, a solid opening-wicket stand of 122 runs between A.P. Singh (81) and Gurinder Saini (63 n.o.) enabled Himachal CC to register win over Sunil-XI by eight wickets.

Himachal CC scored 208 for 2 in the stipulated 20 overs. Ravinder Nain made unbeaten 44.

In reply, Sunil-XI were bowled out for 84 in 18.1 overs. Sunil top-scored with 23 runs. Left-arm spinner Vinod Binta claimed three wickets for 10 runs.

Brief scores: First match: ICL XI: 154 for 4 in 20 overs (Bhageshwar Bisht 65 n.o., Sandeep Singh 30, Mandeep 26 n.o., Paraveen Sharma 2 for 27, Ishan Malhotra 1 for 12, Sandeep Kohli 1 for 20).

Minerva Cricket Academy: 155 for 4 in 15.4 overs (Sandeep Kohli 86, Amardeep Sonkar 18, Vipul Sharma 17 n.o., Ajay Sikka 2 for 18, Vipul Chadha 1 for 26, Vijay Boon 1 for 21).

Second match: Himachal Cricket Club: 208 for 2 in 20 overs (A.P. Singh 81, Gurinder Saini 63 n.o., Ravinder Nain 44 n.o., Karan 1 for 24, Puneet 1 for 21).

Sunil-XI: 82 in 18.1 overs (Sunil 23, Vishal 12, Piyush 12, Vinod Binta 3 for 10, Madan Lal 1 for 16, Amrinder 1 for 18, Om Prakash 1 for 7).

The tournament is being conducted by the Chandigarh Twenty-20 Cricket Association.

Tomorrow, Himachal CC will meet Anoop Cricket Club at 7.30 am, while Minverva CA will take on JJ’s-XI at 10.30 am at the same venue.

Third match: Gurfateh Cricket Club: 115 for 9 in 20 overs (Ajay 40, Kapil Pandey 25, Kulbir 2 for 13, Labbi Nagrath 2 for 11, Dinesh Rana 2 for 22, Ajay Disodia 1 for 8).

Bedi Cricket Club: 116 for 8 in 19.5 overs (Pawan Grewal 42, Labbi Nagrath 20, Kapil Pandey 2 for 18, Naval 2 for 28, Vikram Chaudhary 3 for 15).

Cricket trials

Panchkula, August 12
The Panchkula District Cricket Association will conduct trials to select the under-22 cricket team tomorrow. Aspiring players should report to register themselves at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, Panchkula.

Players born on or before 01-09-1984 and residents of Panchkula district are eligible. Players should bring date of birth certificates attested by a gazetted officer along with two passport-size photographs.
