Liquor seized
: The CIA staff has seized 285 cartons of contraband wine from a godown in Ghallu village and arrested Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Abohar and, Ashok Kumar of Ghallu village, while Gokal Chand of Ghallu village fled on Wednesday.

Research paper
: Harpreet Singh of the Punjab Commerce and Management Association has brought laurels to the city as his research paper, “Globalisation agenda threatens international market system”, has been accepted by the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, for an international conference to be held in December.

Students excel: Kamalpreet Kaur, a MA (II) English student of Guru Nanak Girls College, has got first position in Panjab University. She got 543 marks out of 800. Kiranpreet Kaur secured second position with 535 marks. Students of MA (I) English also scored good marks. Sangamjot Kaur secured 271 marks out of 400 and Nafees Bhambi got 270 marks. While Sangamjot got first position in the university, Nafees stood second. Jasdeep Kaur secured 253 marks and stood 10th in the university.

Phagwara
Dharna
: Hundreds of safai karamcharis belonging to the Nagar Council Safai Karamchari Union and the Municipal Employees Union held a day-long dharna before the ASP’s office against the alleged beating up of safai karamchari Tersem Lal by the Satnampura police on Thursday.

Three arrested: The Phagwara police on Wednesday claimed to have solved several robbery cases with the arrest two members of a gang of robbers under Sections 457/380IPC. The ASP said the police nabbed two persons from Jalandhar with gold ornaments worth Rs one lakh. It also arrested an alleged motorcycle thief Jatinder Kumar and recovered a motorcycle stolen from Phagwara resident Sandeep Gaba.

Body found
: The body of Labh Singh, (55), an employee of the Health Department, posted at Gidarryani village, near Lehragagaa, was found in the Banasar Garden here on Wednesday. The post-mortem was conducted at the local Civil Hospital.

: The Chabal police has registered a case against Jaspal Singh the husband, Jagjit Singh, father-in-law, Major Singh, brother-in-law, Swarn Kaur, mother-in-law and Avtar Singh alias Bau and Paramjit Singh, for allegedly harassing Parambir Kaur, a resident of Panjwar Khurad village for dowry.

Interaction:
A group of international bikers interacted with Ambala Cantonment MLA Devender Bansal here on Thursday. Mr Bansal said the group included an Indian, Deepak Sharma. The other members are from Norway, Japan, Israel, the US, France and the UK. The bikers are on a peace mission.

Poetry recital: UK-based poetess Kavita Jindal on Thursday recited poems from her latest book “Raincheck renewed” at a function at GMN College, Ambala Cantonment. Dr Sudarshan Gasso coordinated the function.

Youth hangs self
: A youth identified as Rajesh committed suicide by hanging himself in his Sector 6 residence in Bahadurgarh on Tuesday night. He was a drug addict and was in depression after his wife left him recently.

‘Ladli Scheme’ to pay moms
: Under the ‘Ladli Scheme’ launched by the Haryana Government, mothers with second girl child will be given Rs 5,000 per month for a period of five years to stem female feoticide. Ms Asha Hooda, Vice- President, Haryana Red Cross Society and Bal Kalyan Parishad, said this while addressing a women empowerment function at Kalayat on Tuesday.

BJP demands arrests
: The BJP has decided to give seven days time to the administration for the arrest of miscreants allegedly responsible for demolition of statue of Kargil martyr Deputy Commandant BSF Sukhbir Singh Yadav. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday at the end of a seven day relay dharna organised by the BJP, he said more protests would be held at district headquarters in the state from August 10.

Office-bearers elected: The following have been elected office- bearers of the Bar Association of Kosli- president - Mr Vikram Singh Yadav; vice-president-Ms Amar Bala Sharma; and secretary- Harkesh.

Suicide by woman: Phool Bai reportedly committed suicide by hanging at Manethi village, 24 km from here, on Tuesday night due to harassment by her in-laws. On a complaint lodged by Rampat, brother of the deceased, the Khol police has registered a case of abetment of suicide under Sections 306, 34 of the IPC against her husband Rajesh Yadav, father-in-law Kishan Lal Yadav and mother-in-law Sarti Devi.

Two held: The police raided Lisana village, 4 km from here, on Tuesday night and nabbed Navin and Lala, residents of Rewari town. Iron rods were seized from them. They were produced in a court which remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days.

Landslides cause traffic jams
: A heavy rain leading to landslides on the Purana Kangra Sabzi Mandi road and the Hoshiarpur road left many passengers and pilgrims on way to temples in the valley for the Shravan Ashtami Mela stranded for hours here on Wednesday.
