Aid for border villages:
The Defence Estate Officer, Jalandhar, has released an amount of Rs 8,77,200 for distribution to affected residents of those border villages falling under this district where mines were installed during Operation Prakaram launched in the aftermath of the attack on Parliament in 2001. Mr Arvinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner, said the amount received from the defence authorities had been sent to the SDM Fazilka for distribution to the affected people.

Employees hold rally:
Members of the Joint Employees Struggle Committee (Irrigation Department), Hoshiarpur staged dharna and held a rally at Canal Colony here on Tuesday in protest against non-payment of their salaries since May.

Held for rape: A case of rape of a three-year-old girl by her neighbour was reported from Mohalla Dashmesh Nagar in Tanda police station of this district on Sunday. Binder, son of Sarup Lal, has been arrested under Sections 276 and 511 of the IPC.

Illicit liquor seized:
Nearly 7,51,800 ml of illicit liquor has been recovered from the possession of Jaspal Singh and Sukhpal Singh, residents of Harike. Police sources told this correspondent on Tuesday that a case under Sections 61, 1, 14 of the Excise Act had been registered against the accused.

Suicide:
A drug addict, Mohinder Singh (40), committed suicide in Urban Estate here on Monday. He used a turban to strangulate himself. The police has registered a case.

SBOP GM: Mr Sudhir Garg took over as the new General Manager (Treasury), State Bank of Patiala, here on Tuesday.

2 held
: The CIA staff of the Rajpura police arrested two persons and seized about 5 gm smack from their possession on Monday. Gaganpreet Singh and Avtar Singh, residents of Patiala, were nabbed at a naka set up by the police near the Shambu barrier. Both are reportedly drug addicts and they used to sell smack.

Run organised
: Sixty cadets from No.1 Chandigarh Naval NCC Unit undertook a run from their unit location in Sector 26 to the Sukhna Lake as part of the NCC activities in the region to promote awareness about AIDS and cancer. The run was flagged off by Col Manjit Singh, Commander, Chandigarh NCC Group, while Cdr Harkirat Singh, the unit’s commanding officer, presided over the function.

Scholarships: The Second Foundation India on Tuesday announced scholarships, totalling Rs 3. 2 lakh, to two needy students who have secured admission in Punjab Engineering College and IIT. Col T S Bakshi, executive director of the Foundation, said the money would be put to good use as the Bharat Vikas Parishad would monitor the progress of the students.

PUSU claim: Members of the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) claimed on Tuesday that the university had decided to reform the fee deposition process owing to its efforts. Mr Rajaydeep Singh, press secretary, PUSU, pointed out PUSU president Rupinderjit Singh Maan had given a memorandum to the VC on July 11 in this regard.

Honoured: Dr Vikas Kohli, Principal, Police DAV Public School, Ambala City has been honoured with the Bharat Excellence Award at a seminar on ‘Economic growth and national unity’ held at India International Centre, New Delhi recently. He received the award and a gold medal from the former Election Commissioner of India, Mr G.V.G. Krishnamurthy.

MLA criticised: The Bharatiya Janata Party district unit president, Mr Ravinder Dhawan, on Monday criticised Ambala Cantt MLA Devender Bansal for failing to fulfil his election promise of withdrawing the need for NOC from the Excised Area in Ambala Sadar. Mr Dhawan said that the NOC has only been removed from within the municipal limits.

Case against in-laws:
Three persons of Charkhi Dadri have been charged with harassing a married woman for dowry and threatening her. In her complaint lodged with the police, Ms Mukesh Devi said she was married to Dinesh of Mandola village. Her parents had given adequate dowry in the marriage but she had to face the wrath of her in-laws. A case has been registered under relevant sections against in-laws.

1 charged with impersonation: The police has charged a youth on the charge of impersonation. The youth, who appeared instead of his brother in a case, has been arrested. A case has been registered on the direction of the court in this connection.

Fatehabad
Awards for rural girls:
The women and Child Development Department will give cash awards to those rural adolescent girls, who have secured first, second or third positions in their respective blocks in the matriculation examination organised by the Haryana School Education Board in 2005-2006. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr O.P. Sheoran, informed mediapersons here on Tuesday. He said the government would give cash awards.

Man murdered:
A Delhi man was killed by some assailants in Matanhail village of the district on Monday night. His body was found lying in the nearby jungle on Tuesday. The deceased, Rajesh, an employee with MCD, had come to the village on Monday when some distant relatives called him. However, a villager who identified himself as Ramesh informed the family of Rajesh in Delhi that they had held him hostage. Late in the night, the local police also called the family of the deceased on the telephone to inform about his murder. A complaint with the police has been lodged but the assailants have not been identified.

Kaithal
2 held for murder:
The police has arrested two persons who allegedly murdered a man by hitting him with bricks following a petty dispute on July 29 at Dillowali village in this district. The accused, Rishi Pal and Shish Pal, both residents of Dillowali, were produced in a local court on Tuesday which sent them in judicial custody.
