PSEB employees’ robbery claim ‘false’

A number of employees posted with the cash counter of the Punjab State Electricity Board at Katani Kalan village, near Sahnewal, could be in a spot of bother with a gang of criminals caught by the police today claiming they had snatched Rs 2000 from the employees two years ago whereas the victims had claimed the robbers took away more than Rs 2 lakh.

No justification for sustaining rice-wheat rotation: Johl
Ludhiana, August 2
There is no justification for sustaining the present rice-wheat rotation as rice has ruined Punjab ecology and depleted its water resources. The hydrological data produced by Punjab Agricultural University indicates that water table is going down by 70 cm per annum in central districts of Punjab and this decline takes place exactly during the rice growing period.

Farmers block traffic
Khamano, August 2
Hundreds of farmers of the Khamano area today blocked traffic on Chandigarh-Ludhiana road for an hour to protest against heavy power cuts. Long queues of vehicles were seen on the road and Khamano police diverted the traffic through other routes .

Mr Roshan Lal Ahuja, Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Presiding Officer of the Fast Track Court, has convicted Mander Singh (47) of Galib Kalan village, Sidhwan Bet, of raping a “mentally challenged” 14-year minor girl.

Having lost his wife to breast cancer, a local industrialist and philanthropist, Mr Pran Arora, has set up a charitable trust to help victims of this killer disease.
