While talking to Chandigarh Tribune, 21-year-old Manju said: While on one hand, the Punjab Government runs a campaign against female foeticide, but on the other it shows no respect to women who run from pillar to post for a livelihood. If this is the life, then it was better if we were not born here”.

Belonging to a peasant family, Manju, the eldest of her two siblings, said: “My father made a lot of efforts to provide me the best he could. He hoped that one day I will be able to stand on my feet and support my brother and sister, but the state government’s apathy has shattered his dreams.”

Ivory Coast artistes enamour audience
S.D. Sharma

‘Music can constitute a bond between the people of different lands, levels and culture’ was proven beyond doubt by the singing dancers of the Ivory Coast, West Africa, who enthralled the city music lovers at the Tagore theatre in a special concert today. The programme was brought to the city by the regional directorate of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations ( ICCR) as a part of their cultural exchange programme.

“Ivory coast, which ceded to France in 1842 and became a republic in 1960, had many historical and cultural similarities with India” opined lead artiste Ehui Frederick Desire, best known as Meiway as he led the four dazzling dancers to the centre stage. Meyway opened up the scintillating spell with ‘800 per cent Zoblazo”, which epitomises the series of his popular music creations in new modern style starting with 200 per cent Zoblazo’.

The troupe presented the items in French, including Voila string. Golgotha , Vis a Vis Adibo Bo, Allussan, 200 per cent Zoblazo, Miss Lolo and Ma Folie. The noted compere Kanwal Preet, explained the thematic content of the songs enabling the audience to relish it more.

The songs were weaved with emotional themes of love in all its manifestations, peace, mutual brotherhood and reverence for God. Meiway established an instant rapport with audience, which reciprocated the dancers’ gestures waving white handkerchiefs.

In yet another solo performance, Meiway presented the full song with personal interaction with the audience down in the hall much to their delight. Meiway became emotional as he rendered the song depicting the poverty of his country. They concluded the programme with an incredibly intoxicating performance as all dancers took the programme to an inevitable climax. The virile but precise electrifying body movements, the dancers in sync and melodious and powerful voice of Meiway made the concert a memorable experience. M.M. Sharma, Regional Director, ICCR, welcomed the internationally renowned sculptor artist, Shiv Singh, who honoured the artistes.
