Workshop on HR management
Ludhiana, July 29 The workshop was sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Punjab. It was attended by about 70 officials of the Department of Agriculture. Mr Amanpreet Singh Brar from GNIMT was the coordinating link with PAMETI in organising this workshop. Director, Agriculture, Dr B.S. Sidhu, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while speaking on the importance of the human resource management stated that it was the man behind the machine, not just the machine that was important. Dr (Col) H.S. Singha, Director, GNIMT, discussed the managerial effectiveness and the emotional intelligence in human relations. He encouraged the participants to create better work life by being a part of the solution rather than the problem itself. He emphasised that one should be more concerned about what he should do rather than what others should do because even one’s single-handed performance could make a difference and set an example for others to follow. “Whatever one does, he should try to bring perfection in it,” he said. Prof Sandhya Mehta of GNIMT discussed about interpersonal relationships and team building. She emphasised encashing on the synergistic effect of team work by improving communication and interpersonal relationships. Col P.S. Chaudhary (retd), Corporate GM (Education and Administration), Vardhman Group of Industries talked about the importance and use of constructive appraisal of the workforce for increasing its effectiveness in achieving organisational goals. Dr S.P.S. Brar, Director, PAMETI, while elaborating on the objectives of the workshop stated that self-motivation and self-management went a long way in team building and meeting the goals of the organisation. PAMETI also honoured one of its eminent resource persons, Dr M.S. Gill, Chief Agronomist, PAU, on his elevation to the post of Project Director, Directorate of Cropping Systems Research, Modipuram on the occasion. |
Maths exhibition organised
Ludhiana, July 29 The Director of the school, Father Davis, and the principal, Sr Sobel, had motivated the students to promote analytical interpretations, critical observations and creative presentation in the field of mathematics, the signs of which were clearly visible in the models and charts displayed. Mr S.N. Sharma, a renowned mathematician who has been associated with the CBSE, was the chief guest on the occasion. He congratulated the teachers and students for their efforts and praised their creativity and hard work. Ms Reeta Gupta, Head of the mathematics department said,“The purpose of the exhibition is to bring maths out of books into the hands and minds of the students. Moreover, there is no greater joy in the world than to solve a mathematical problem successfully.” Students of Class I to V displayed colourful and expressive models to show the concepts of time, geometrical shapes, ascending and descending Roman numerals, addition and subtraction, currency etc. Students of classes VI to XIII worked hard on projects based on theorems, mensuration and flow charts. They displayed and explained concepts related to arithmetic, algebra, statistics etc with great zeal. The existence of symmetry in art, relations, music, dance, economics, geography, biology, physics and chemistry were all demonstrated with working models that were prepared by the students. The school co-ordinator, Ms Beena Rao, proposed the vote of thanks and said that they intend to take tears out of mathematics and put joy instead. Parents were delighted with the handiwork of their children. |
Workshops on paper-cutting, painting end

Ludhiana, July 29 Another three-day workshop on paintings concluded here today. Ms Ramma taught students different types of paintings like fabric painting, glass painting, Egyptian painting, ceramic painting and Tharokha paintings etc. MA results: Students of the Devki Devi Jain College for Women here achieved 100 per cent pass percentage, both in MA II (Hindi) and MA I (History) exams. In MA II (Hindi), Shilpi stood first in the college with 60 per cent marks, while Kiran Sedha and Salony Arora bagged second and third positions, respectively.In MA I (History), Rupinder Kaur scored 61.75 per cent marks and stood first in the college, while Renu Saini and Priya Rawal scored 61.20 per cent and 60.5 per cent marks and stood second and third, respectively. Students of the SDP College for Women also achieved 100 pass percentage in MA II (Hindi) results conducted by Panjab University. Teej celebrated: Students of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School, Chandigarh Road, celebrated Teej with great enthusiasm.A festive atmosphere prevailed in the school. Girls and boys were dressed up in traditional Punjabi dresses. Swings were put up to enhance the atmosphere of Teej. Students enjoyed themselves on the swings and sung songs and performed giddha and bhangra. Girls decorated their hands with ‘mehandi’. Prizes were given to the best dressed girl and boy and the best folk singer of ‘tappe’ and ‘bolian’. The purpose of the function was to make the children aware of the rich Punjabi culture and heritage and the significance of Teej. Orientation programme: A special orientation programme for parents was held here today in Guru Gobind Singh Public School. The purpose was to accustom the parents about the changing evaluation system proposed by the Central Board of Secondary Education.The Principal, Ms Manjeet Kaur, explained about the new evaluation system introduced by the CBSE wherein internal assessment, evaluation of project work, continuous and comprehensive assessment would be introduced. Doubts raised by the parents were also cleared She also told the parents that the school had arranged a gold medallist trainer, Mr Baljinder Singh, for teaching self -defence to the students. She said that a team of boys and girls will be formed to participate in various competitions of martial arts and Gatka. Mehandi competition: As many as 200 students from classes IV to XII of Baba Isher Singh Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, participated in a Rangoli and Mehandi Competition held here today.The competitions were divided into three groups. The Principal, Ms Anita Kundra, presided over the function while Dr M.K. Virk and Mr J.K. Gill from Family Resource Management, Home Science College, PAU, were the judges. The participants showed their aptitude in various intricate designs of mehandi and rangoli. |
ASCW students secure top positions
Ludhiana, July 29 Dr Rekha Bhardwaj, Principal told TNS that Rajni Verma topped the university examination by securing 70.5 per cent marks, Aarti Tondon stood second with 70 per cent marks, Sonia third with 67.5 per cent marks and Jagrup Kaur fifth in the university by securing 68.25 per cent marks. Mr Yoginder Sharma, president of the college managing committee, while congratulating the students, has lauded the efforts of the Principal, faculty, students and their parents for creating a new chapter in the history of the institution. |
Pioneer of sports festival dead
Ludhiana, July 29 The office-bearers of the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club, Jarkhar, expressed shock over Major Singh’s demise. Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu and Mr Depinder Singh, chairman and president, respectively of the club, Mr Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, Mr Daljit Singh besides Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, president, Basketball Federation of India, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association mourned the death of Major Singh. Mr Ramesh Singla, chairman, Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council, Mr Pargat Singh, Director, Sports, Punjab have also expressed sympathies with the family. The trainees of the Jarkhar Hockey Academy observed two minutes silence to pay tributes to Major Singh. |

Basketball fraternity mourns
Dalvinder's death
Ludhiana, July 29 In a condolence message sent to the family, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, recalled Lally's
contribution to the game of basketball. Dalvinder represented Punjab in the Junior National Basketball Championship at Pune in 1982 and also toured Manila the same year to participate in the junior ABC meet. He was the member of the Punjab squad which won the title in the Senior National Basketball Championship held at Cuttack in 1984. Besides other tournaments, Lally took part in an international meet in Thailand in 1986. Sajjan Singh Cheema, Suman Sharma, Ajmer Singh, Parminder Singh and Anil Punj, all Arjuna awardees, have also mourned the untimely demise of the former international player. They expressed sympathies with Lally's wife. A condolence meeting was held yesterday at Guru Nanak Stadium to pay homage to the departed soul. The trainees of the coaching centre being run here by the Ludhiana District Basketball Association, the office-bearers of the association and coaches observed a two minutes silence to pay homage to the departed soul. |

City shuttlers for coaching camp
Ludhiana, July 29 According to a communique from Mr L.C. Gupta, secretary, BAI, on the recommendations of Gopi Chand, chief national coach and Sanjeev Sachdeva, chief coach (juniors), 24 boys and 14 girls have been shortlisted as probables for the camp. Another upcoming Punjab shuttler, Bob Sharma from Patiala has also been selected for this camp. Raj Kumar, son of the care taker of Shastri Badminton Hall of Guru Nanak Sports Complex, Ludhiana, hogged limelight in 2002 when he, along with Gurbax Singh, also from Ludhiana emerged champions in the national subjunior championship held at Patna. Next year, Raj Kumar, pairing with Pranav Chopra reached semifinals at Calicut. However, this duo clinched the doubles title in 2004 edition of this tournament, held in Chandigarh. Raj Kumar finished runners-up in the singles in Chandigarh. Raj Kumar, student of Tagore Public School, Atam Nagar, Ludhiana has been performing well this year also. He paired with Parin Chopra from Maharashtra in the junior ranking tournaments (u-16 years) and wrapped up the title in two out of three. They won at Cochin and Chennai while at Pune, the pair could make it to the last four stage. Similarly, Pranav Chopra is the bright prospect for India. After making his presence felt in this part of the region, Parnav's father, Mr Mohinder Kumar Chopra, a keen follower of the game has sent him to Mumbai to further improve his game. Currently, Pranav is getting coaching at a centre run by the former national champion, Uday Pawar and his wife in Mumbai. |
