Three militants, including two mercenaries, were killed and one was arrested in the Jammu and Kashmir overnight, official spokesman said today.

40 injured in lathicharge on protesters

Nearly 40 persons, including 12 police personnel were injured when the police fired in the air, burst tear gas shells and resorted to repeated lathicharge to disperse a mob, including women and children at Arpora, 10 km from here today.

Fall in number of Amarnath pilgrims

Incidents of terrorism and incessant rain have resulted in sudden decline in the number of pilgrims to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in the south Kashmir.

The controversy about the man-made Shivalingam at the cave shrine is also understood to have led to fall in the number of pilgrims.

Against 1400 to 1700 pilgrims leaving for the shrine under security cover every morning from here a few days ago, the number has suddenly dipped to around 500 now.

While 558 pilgrims left this morning from here for the shrine, their number of 588 yesterday when only 18 vehicles were in the convoy.

As many as 866 pilgrims in 26 vehicles proceeded to the shrine from here on Saturday. However, their number was 1395 on July 20.

The decline in the number of pilgrims was being registered since blasts in trains in Mumbai. Frequent suspension of the pilgrimage due to landslides and bad weather was also being considered as one of the reason for the decline in the number of pilgrims.

The two-month long annual pilgrimage started on June 10 and would conclude on August 9.

As many as 1045 pilgrims left for the shrine from here on July 21 whereas their number on July 19 was 1480 in a convoy of 43 vehicles. The highest number of 3565 pilgrims in 107 vehicles left towards the base camp at Anantnag from here in the morning of July 16. The number was that high as many pilgrims were stranded here the previous day because the pilgrimage was suspended due to bad weather. On July 17 their number of 1678.

Prior to that, a convoy of 80 vehicles carrying 2206 pilgrims left from here on July 8 and 2031 pilgrims were allowed to go on July 11.

Against the expectation of 5 lakh pilgrims visiting the shrine this time, about 2.50 lakh have so far reached there.

Pilgrim dies of heart attack

An Amarnath pilgrim belonging to the army died at Sheshnag last night, official sources said today.

With this, the toll since the commencement of the two-month pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine on June 11, has risen to 43. A majority of the pilgrims died due to heart failure.

According to sources, Sube Manjit Singh from R S Pora, Jammu, suffered a massive heart attack at Sheshnag when he was on the way to the holy cave shrine last night. Mr Singh was posted at Sheshnag.

The sources said despite rains near the cave periphery, the yatra was going on smoothly from the shortest Baltal and traditional Pahalgam routes. — UNI

Top Lashkar militant held

In yet another major success, the Jammu and Kashmir Police here today arrested a top militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba, Mohammad Hanief alias Faheem, carrying a reward of Rs 3 lakh on his head. The arrest comes only days after that of Mohammad Rafiq Sheikh alias Raju carrying a reward of Rs five lakhs, who had been responsible for the May 21 suicide attack on a Congress rally here and other attacks on tourists.

Disclosing his arrest here today, a police spokesman said Mohammad Hanief alias Faheem alias Hanief Bengali had the responsibility of procuring arms and ammunition for LeT cadres, supplying grenades at various places under the orders of Raju. “He was also given the responsibility of transferring Pakistani fidayeen from one place to another for suicidal attacks in Srinagar and elsewhere”, the spokesman added.

While announcing the arrest of Mohammad Rafiq Sheikh alias Raju here on Saturday last, DGP Gopal Sharma had announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh leading to the arrest of Faheem. He had also announced on June 30 a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Lashkar-e-Toiba operational chief Bilal alias Salahuddin.

3 militants killed

Srinagar, July 24
Three militants, including two mercenaries, were killed and one was arrested in the Jammu and Kashmir overnight, official spokesman said today.

He said one militant was arrested at Sitkipora in south Kashmir and at his instance 250 kg of explosive material had been seized.

The explosive seized was not RDX. He said militant Shabir Ahmad was killed in an inter-group clash in Udhampur last night. Security forces gunned down two foreign militants Adnan and Shahid, resident of Pakistan, in an encounter in south Kashmir district of Pulwama. The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by the militants.

The police seized one 303 rifle with a magazine and nine rounds at Shalimar last night. However, no one was arrested. — UNI

40 injured in lathicharge on protesters

Srinagar, July 24
Nearly 40 persons, including 12 police personnel were injured when the police fired in the air, burst tear gas shells and resorted to repeated lathicharge to disperse a mob, including women and children at Arpora, 10 km from here today.

The police also took in custody 15 demonstrators, who were demanding repair of roads in their area.

Similar demonstrations were also held on the same issue at Balhama, Zafran colony and Sampora.

Official sources said 5,000 people, including women, students and children, belonging to 30 villages took to streets demanding immediate repair of 10 km damaged roads from Panthak Chowk to Zeewan. — UNI
