Adamant Jamia students go on fast
New Delhi, July 20 Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, ordered an in-depth inquiry into the incident by retired High Court Judge S. K. Agarwal. The VC has also taken a rather tough line on the admissions issue, saying categorically that old students who had been denied admission this term would not be given any reprieve on the matter and the university had decided to refuse admission to all those whose records in the past were suggestive of indiscipline, misconduct or indecorous behaviour. He further informed that a list of 45 names had been prepared on these grounds and most of these students had records stretching over several years. The students on the whole remained unimpressed with the inquiry ordered by the Vice-Chancellor. Shams declared that “this move is a sham and is an attempt on the part of the university authorities to hide the truth and let time bury it. They are not sincere about addressing our problems.” Shams and six other rather determined students sat down on a 24-hour hunger strike in an attempt to get the university to address their demands. Shams further added that “the committee has been appointed by the VC on his own without consulting us and we do not expect much out of this. We do not really trust the VC.” A delegation of Jamia students is also planning to call on the HRD Minister, Mr Arjun Singh, and present their six-point charter of demands. The main ones are arrest of the Proctor and his son, the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation, withdrawal of the sine die closure of the university and admission to the rejected students. The atmosphere in Jamia continues to be highly tense due to the massive violence that erupted on the campus this Tuesday. Hostels have been closed down and the university has been declared sine die. Many students are congregating outside the VC’s office to declare their protest and their support to the boys sitting on hunger strike. It maybe many days before the situation normalises. |

DU gears up for thanksgiving to retired employees
New Delhi, July 20 In an attempt to teach the educators and prepare them for what lies ahead, as they step into their twilight years and to familiarise the seniors of possible health conditions that are largely associated with growing years, the WUS Health Centre, South Campus, is organising public lectures by eminent doctors. The speakers will shed light on relevant topics for the benefit of retired employees of university community. Interactive sessions will be organised on subjects like ‘Heart Attack and Coronary Bypass Surgery’ and panelists will discuss ‘Common Medical, Social and Psychological Problems Faced by Elderly People’. “The programme is for the retired members of the university. It will provide them not just a platform to interact with their old friends and colleagues, but will also allow them to learn more about the diseases that one faces during old age,” said Dr K. K. Kohli. He said the programme scheduled for July 23 at 10.30 at the S. P. Jain Centre for Management Auditorium, South Campus, is “totally dedicated to the retired employees and their family members” and has been named “a day with elders”. “Doctors will educate the senior members of the university about various diseases. They will also take questions from the audience on various issues, including psychological problems. There will be provisions for blood sugar tests, information on eye donation and consultation,” said Dr Kohli. He pointed out that with social pressure on the rise and with the growth of nuclear families, older people generally felt emotional depravation. “The average age of the people has increased, social and other pressures have increased, there is no social security, in such a scenario the older people sometimes feel emotionally deprived. It is these issues that we want to address through this interaction,” he pointed out. |

Night shift timeframe for women extended
Gurgaon, July 20 This was announced here by the Labour Secretary, Haryana Government, Mrs Promila Issar, during her interaction with the unit owners of the state here today. Earlier, the individual units were given permission for one year and further continuation was subject to fresh approval from the Ministry of Labour. However, due to the rush for jobs and to facilitate the units to be more competitive at the global scale, the government is understood to have shown leniency. Mrs Issar, however, cautioned that the grant of three years of approval would not allow the units to be casual regarding their commitment to ensure a healthy working conditions at the workplaces and, ensure overall safety and security of the female employees right from their journey to and from their house. The personnel of labour department would make surprise visits to the units to inspect the situation. In case of laxity, the approval would be annulled, she added. About 1,000 executives from the IT and ITES units in the state took part in the programme. As Gurgaon has the majority of the units, the bulk of the participants were from this city. Mrs Issar touched on all aspects related to the security of woman employees. A number of other dos and don’ts are to be observed by the unit owners. She, however, assured the industry that in case 50 per cent of the female employees of any unit wanted to be exempted from the restrictive regimen, an exemption could be considered following amendment to the existing law. She expressed concern that the unit owners did not cooperate with the personnel of labour department when they visited the units. She suggested that each unit assigned one of its employees to facilitate the inspection visits of the personnel. She further suggested that the units owners should send their applications to the local units of the labour department rather than sending them to the headquarters at Chandigarh. The state’s Labour Commissioner, Mrs Saroj Siwatch, accompanied Mrs Issar on the occasion. |

Northern Rly reviews security after Mumbai blasts
Ghaziabad, July 20 The Railway Protection Force’s Dy. Inspector General Anup Srivastava presided over a meeting of departmental railway staff in Ghaziabad railway station yesterday. Mr Srivastava impressed upon the RPF and other railway employees a number of points which could defeat the terrorists’ plans. Mr Srivastava said the terrorist’s acts on July 11 were a direct attack on the country’s lifeline, civilian population and the country on the whole. He said in north India also, the railways serve as a lifeline for a large number of people and to ensure that the trains should run without any accident is the joint responsibility of all concerned apart from the security agencies. A small lapse can result in a big accident, Mr Srivastava said. Similarly, a small act of caution may help avoid a big accident also. The DIG appealed to the vendors on platforms, peons and even auto drivers to help the railway authorities defeat the designs of terrorists. DIG Srivastava said the railways have started safety campaign at Delhi, New Delhi and Nizamuddin railway stations, and if all travelling public help the railways in this, no terrorist can succeed in endangering our life and railways. |
Builder mafia eyeing Janata flats to make a killing
New Delhi, July 20 The Delhi Government has recently handed over keys to 1,000 such flats to workers of the Bawana industrial area through a lucky draw. Fifteen hundreds such flats are also at the level of finishing touch in the same locality. The lucky draw of these flats is likely to be declared out in the next month. Prior to the start of the Commonwealth Games 2010, all proposed 40,000 flats are to be constructed. According to sources, two types of flats are being constructed. One is on the 31.6m area and its cost is Rs 1.70 lakh and second type is on 37.7 m area and its cost is Rs 2 lakh. “All allottees of the recently held draw of Bawana-based these flats are local industrial workers. They have borrowed heavily from their employers for purchasing these flats. On the black market, the prices of these flats are being estimated two-three times more than actual prices. Sensing this new-found scenario, the builder mafia and property dealers are striving to grab these flats at any cost as they are seeing very good margin in the deal. They are even convincing employers to mount pressure on allottees of these flats to repay borrowed money as soon as possible. Their trick is working good as some allottees have even sold out their flats,” said a local resident. An allottee of these flats said there was no denying the fact that market rates of these flats were much higher than the actual rates. These would rise in the coming days, seeing the development of this area. “Precisely, due to this reason, these flats are attracting the attention of local property dealers and building mafia. Most allottees of these flats want to sell these flats due to temptation and non-availability of basic civic facilities in the colony. At the time of inauguration of these flats, the Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit, had promised to provide all facilities to the colony like hospital, market, post office, school, Mother Dairy booth etc leave aside basic civic amenities,” he added. The Department of Industry, Government of Delhi, has handed over the responsibility to construct these 40,000 flats to the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC). The corporation has acquired 23 acres of land in Bawana for this purpose over which 3,164 units of flats are to be constructed. As many as 16,000 industrial units are being resettled in Bawana. The rest of the flats are to be constructed at other locations of Delhi. These flats will be of three and four storeys. According to the president of the Bharastachar Nirodhak Morcha, Mr Narender Kumar Singh, most allottees of these flats are daily wagers or workers who are ill-paid. They have somehow arranged the cost of their flats by borrowing money from various sources. Now it is very difficult to repay their debts as they have very limited sources of income. In such circumstances, they have little option than resale of flats. Local property dealers and the building mafia are taking advantage out of their plight. This trend will continue in future after the construction of other flats. The government should arrange some easy finance to these flat allottees to ease the burden of heavy debts,” he asserted. |

Waste recyclers felicitated
New Delhi, July 20 Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, which has been working with waste recyclers in Delhi under many challenging circumstances, has pointed out that many changes at the ground take place largely because of the leadership displayed by the waste-recycling sector itself. “From building up a relationship with the police to demanding dignity, the leaders of an area usually take the entire group forward”, it was mentioned. The group conducted a large number of workshops to discuss what exactly leadership was with the community. The community identified 50 leaders from among themselves. Later, a jury comprising a range of professionals also participated in a short listing. Eight persons who have displayed the greatest leadership in the past five years were awarded prizes by Chintan. The special guest for the evening was Ms Gowri Ishwaran, Principal, Sanskriti School. Addressing the audience, she said, “The work of a waste picker stands second to none in the development of our country”. She also remarked that if NGOs like Chintan started working in other parts in India then it would be a great help for India to become a developed country. Ms Bharati Chaturvedi, Director, Chintan, said, “We hope that with this awards ceremony there will be much greater recognition of the work of the recycling sector and the government will recognise them as leaders in waste management.” She also said that Chintan would conduct such programmes every year from now onwards so that more leaders could come out from the community and do good for their fellow men. |
