In aviation, attitude is vital
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 20
Ten years of watching the skies open to a plethora of players might quantify as an edge and the Air Hostess Academy’s (AHA) career seminar on the aviation and hospitality industry was all about spreading the buoyancy that these sectors are going through among their students.

While the panel of three speakers comprising A. K. Verma, Assistant General Manager, Air Traffic Control, Chandigarh Airport, Jayesh Kalra and Javed Grewal, Directors from Country Inns and Suites by Carlson, all reiterated the boom in the service industry, Sapna Gupta, Chief Consultant and founder of the AHA, believes what the academy offers is more than just a sense of confidence. “It is self-worth, self-assurance and development of soft skills as a base for further training which is certainly not based on airlines’ preferences.”

Attitude is the key to selection, says Sapna, whose 25 centres across the country, get thousands of applications every year. “If you believe you can further yourself as a human being and have the will to succeed, then yes, we are here to help you. However, if all you want is a job at the end of the course with scant attention being paid to what you are being taught, then there is no point,” she says firmly.

According to Sapna, the AHA has a 90 per cent placement success rate with as many as 72 companies having come in for on-campus recruitments last year, which included several national and international airlines like Qatar, Air Lanka, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Kingfisher, Jet and Spice Jet as well as players from the hotel industry like Taj Group, ITC Hotels and Le Meridian.

The academy, which opened in 1997 with just three students, is now churning out 7,000 to 8,000 trained youngsters each year. “We are different in every way from the numerous similar schools that have sprung up. For one, we are the pioneers in this field, having started out first. Also, we do not believe in bringing in celebrities as gimmicks to attract students.”

An ISO 9001:2000 certified company, the AHA has also received an award for innovative training, a fact which Sapna acknowledges with pride for when she launched the AHA, there were no guidelines that she could follow, so everything to do with the curriculum was a novelty. “Starting up is not a problem; what is difficult is sustaining the growth and that is what we have done. The institution has grown not because of financial backing but because of the students, their thirst for knowledge, for a broader horizon.”

Triple arterial bypass grafting performed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 20
More and more young patients are coming in with coronary heart disease and the reasons stem from a family history of obesity, hypertension, diabetes or faulty lifestyles.

When 34-year-old Harpreet Singh, a software engineer, complained of chest pain, doctors thought it to be one of the many cases of a blocked artery.

A thorough investigation and an angiography later, doctors at the Grecian Superspeciality Hospital had confirmed that three of his four arteries were blocked and he needed a bypass operation.

“The pain was persistent and refused to go away. We decided to go in for surgery immediately because doctors told us that the heart had not been damaged so far. They told us of the procedure involved in triple arterial bypass grafting and we were satisfied with their plan of action”, explained Mr Harpreet at a press conference organised at the Press Club here today.

Dr S.S. Samra, managing director and cardiothorasic surgeon of the hospital, who performed the triple arterial bypass grafting, said it was all about skill and training.

“Rather than using veins from his leg, we used radial arteries from both forearms. The artery from the chest was also used, completing the three conduits. The arteries were chosen over veins from the leg because the latter had a lifespan of not more than 15 years. Since the patient was young, he would have been forced to go in for another surgery by the time he would turn 50”, Dr Samra stated.

With the use of arteries, Mr Harpreet might never have to undergo a repeat surgery or go in for a long duration of expensive and debilitating medicine.

“The patient had between 40 and 50 years of a productive life ahead and the most crucial factor, age, was on his side. His family was supportive and positive, which hastened his treatment”, the doctor added.

The arterial bypass was an improvement over the bypass performed using veins, not only because it gave a longer lifespan to the patients, but also because of faster recovery of the patient.

“The patient was on his feet in one week and within two weeks, he was back to work. While a patient has to follow regular precautions, as in the case of an ordinary bypass, this requires special training. We do not have training centres for the same in India and we are open to training doctors interested”, explained Dr Samra.

He said the operation was more expensive and longer than the conventional bypass, being more complex in nature.

“Against a normal bypass surgery, which costs Rs 1.25 lakh, the arterial bypass on a beating heart costs nearly Rs 1.40 lakh because of the complexities involved and greater skill required in performing it”, the expert concluded.

“Mongia’s comeback was expected”
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 20
As was expected, the big day has again come after one year and three months for local cricketer Dinesh Mongia with his selection in the final 15 for the forthcoming Triangular ODI Series at Colombo, Sri Lanka, commencing from August 14 to 29.

Punjab Ranji skipper Mongia, a southpaw all rounder, staged his comeback by putting up all round performance in the English Cricket County Leicestershire.

For Mongia, who has 1073 runs in 51 ODIs with the average of 27.51 to his credit, the cricket career always was like a roller coaster ride. Though he has much talent as well as potential yet he could not make a permanent place in the team because of his average performance in the big events. He was banished from the team after the one-day match in April 2005 against Pakistan at Delhi.

Congratulating Mongia on his selection, the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, Mr M P Pandove said that the opportunity should have come his way one year back. “I am happy with the decision as Mongia’s experience will make the team stronger”, said Mr Pandove.

On the question, whether the influence of PCA lobby worked behind the decision, Mr Pandove denied any lobbying.

The secretary of Chandigarh Cricket Association (HCA) Mr Surinder Singh BaiJee gave credit to Mongia’s good performance at Leicestershire. “Mongia has been doing very well with both ball and bat in the county cricket and his fine performance there has cleared his way”, opined BaiJee.

Expressing his happiness over his fellow player’s inclusion, Punjab Ranji player Gaurav Gupta is hopeful that if Mongia will prove his worth, if given a chance in playing-11. However, Gaurav termed it a very good opportunity for the southpaw to cement his place for the coming World Cup-2007.
