PTU increases seats in BBA, BCA courses

The intake capacity of BBA and BCA courses of Punjab College of Technical Education, PCTE, has been increased from 120 to 200 each by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. PTU has increased the seats of PCTE in these courses because of excellent academic performance of the institution at national level. PCTE is the only institution under PTU, which has got 200, seats each in BBA and BCA.

Other than PCTE, there are six more colleges at Phagwara, Rajpura, Landran, Anandpur Sahib, Mandi Gobindgarh and Kot-Ise-Khan which got their seats increased in both BBA and BCA.

Since PCTE has been rated Best B-School of Punjab, HP and J&K by B-School surveys conducted by three leading business magazines, OUTLOOK, Indian Management and Business India in 2004 and 2005, PCTE is getting excellent response from all over the country. Besides this, PCTE has 10 foreign students studying in BBA and BCA from Tanzania, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and seven more students are expected to join PCTE in the current semester from Rwanda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, said Dr KNS Kang, director, PCTE.

PAU Home Science College gets good response

Contrary to the ageold notion that home science education provides training to household activities only, it empowers the girl students with self employment and entrepreneurial skills thereby making them efficient home makers as well as financial contributors to the family. This was proved when all the 50 seats of B.Sc (home science) were filled at PAU recently.

Dr (Ms) M.K. Dhillon, Dean, College of Home Science, PAU, said they had received 113 applications against 50 seats in B.Sc and 42 were filled from the general category. The merit for science stream students started at 84 per cent while the cut-off percentage was 53.7 per cent. The cut-off per centage for arts students was 70.66 per cent.

Dr Dhillon stressed that the thinking of people had changed in all these years. Earlier, they wanted to make their wards doctors and engineers only. But today, they are encouraging their daughters to become good dieticians/diet counsellors in hospitals and health clubs etc.

She added: “We are offering courses in food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, family resource management, human development and sociology. The Department of Food and Nutrition provides expertise in planning of balanced diet for different age groups, preparation of nutritious recipes, food preservation and baking.”

Besides being dieticians, the students can start their own bakery, food preservation and large scale catering enterprise, said Dr Dhillon.

She further added that PAU Ludhiana was running one degree programme B.Sc (Hons) home science of 4(3+1) years duration and one year diplomas in interior decoration, fashion designing, food preservation and baking and management of creche and nursery school.

The eligibility for degree and diplomas was 10+2 (medical, non-medical or arts with home science) and 10+2 respectively.

Talk on manufacturing tools

An expert talk on ‘Six sigma and lean manufacturing: evolutionary tools for world class manufacturing’ was organised at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) under the ongoing golden jubilee lecture series programme here on Wednesday. The speaker was Mr Mandeep Singh Sekhon, director, strategic planning and continuous improvement, TARKETT Incorporated, Texas, USA.

Prof K.K. Sareen welcomed the expert speaker and the audience. Dr Sehijpal Singh introduced Mr Sekhon, a 1988 batch mechanical engineering graduate form GNDEC. He is a reputed consultant and auditor (with black belt certification) for six sigma and lean manufacturing-based industrial problems in USA. The lecture was attended by around 80 delegates from local industry, MERADO, R and D centre for bicycle and sewing machines, CIHT Jalandhar, and technical/management institutes Punjab and Haryana.

In his lecture, Mr Sekhon stressed that six sigma and lean manufacturing were very essential tools for the overall growth and continuous improvement of industry. Indian manufacturing industry had a great challenge in the global competitive market scenario. There was a strong need for Indian manufactures to adopt these new and latest strategies.

He congratulated and encouraged the faculty of mechanical engineering department to take live industrial problems related to the application six sigma and lean manufacturing concepts.

Prof Chandandeep Singh, while proposing vote of thanks to the audience, said that at present, five postgraduate students were doing their M.Tech thesis on these topics and efforts were in progress to tie up with industries to take up actual problems.

Rotary scholarships for students

The Rotary Club, Ludhiana, organised a function at Government Senior Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar Camp, yesterday in which scholarships were distributed to 10 students of senior classes who had been adopted for Rotary scholarships on merit-cum-need basis.

The function was attended by Rtn Sarbjit Singh (president ), Rtn S.P. Karkara (vice-president ), Rtn Kanti K. Behal (secretary), PDG Rtn Suresh Chaudhry, Rtn R.I. Chadha, Rtn Dr Harbans Singh, Rtn S.P. Puri, Rtn Harbhajan Singh, Rtn Darshan Singh, Rtn A.S. Pandher, Rtn H.S. Khurana, Rtn S.S. Chopra, Rtn Jagdish Behal, Rtn Romesh Sood, Rtn Maj S.S. Khosla, Rtn Balbir Singh, Rtn Dr Prabhjot Kaur and Rtn Ramesh Gandhi.

The function was anchored by Ms Babita Jain, a senior teacher of the school. Ms Shakuntala, Principal of the school, thanked the Rotarians for help and assistance in various fields. She said giving scholarships to the deserving students would help tremendously, which in turn would culminate in producing better, educated and versatile citizens in the country. She highlighted some difficulties currently being faced by the school.

Club president Rtn Sarbjit Singh assured the school management on behalf of the club that they would endeavour to redress some of the explained difficulties with viable possible solutions from time to time.

Secretary Rtn Kanti K. Behal spoke briefly about the importance of proper and successful functioning of a good school.

Rtn Romesh Sood also addressed the gathering. He spoke about the importance of English conversation in the present competitive world.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Mid-Town and the Inner-Wheel Club of Ludhiana Mid-Town held installation ceremonies here yesterday. Dist governor Rtn Romesh Rana was the chief guest and he installed Rtn K.S. Bajwa as the president for 2006-07. President K.S. Bajwa introduced the team members, which included secretary Rtn Bhupinder Singh Grewal, vice-presidents Rtn Sunil Budhi Raja, Rtn Sanjeev Gupta, Rtn Kulbir S. Jodhka Kelly, treasurer Rtn Sunil Goel, sergeant at arms Rtn Tarvinder Dhingra, joint secretary Rtn Ashok Chawla, directors Rtn Sunil Dhir, Rtn Inderbir Nanda, Rtn Rajan Kapur, Rtn Aman Kapur, Rtn Prem Gupta , Dr R. Tah and Mr Surinder S. Bhogal.

The outgoing president thanked the members for the excellent work done during his tenure and lauded the work of his team members and presented gifts to them.

Outgoing secretary Rtn Kulbir S. Jodhka Kelly read out the annual report for 2005-06. District chairperson (Inner Wheel) Kesh Lata Bymr was the chief guest. She installed Ms Manisha Gupta as the club president for the year 2006-07.

Ms Manisha Gupta inducted the following team members for 2005-06 for the Innerwheel Club: vice-president — Ms Renuka Munjal; secretary — Ms Jyoti Tah; joint secretary — Ms Aruna Lamba; and treasurer — Ms Vaneera Garg.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women students excel

Students of BA II at Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women have brought laurels to the institute by securing excellent marks in the examination. Total pass percentage of the college is 98 per cent. Ninetynine students got first division. Manmeet Kaur Gaba secured 81.06 per cent marks, Richa Pruthi 79.43 per cent while Simarpreet Kaur got 76.68 per cent marks.

Prof Gurbir Sarna and Ms Manju Chawla, Principal of the college, have congratulated the staff and students of the college.

Doraha institute

Students of the Doraha Institute of Management and Technology (DIMT) have secured excellent marks in the BCA (final) examination conducted by Punjab Technical University in May, 2006.

Dr R.S. Gupta, Director of the institute, said today that in the BCA (final) examination Mandeep Kaur bagged the first position with 84.3 per cent marks. Sapna got the second position with 82.7 per cent marks while Mukesh Sharma stood third with 81.5 per cent marks. As much as 54 per cent students got more than 71 per cent marks.

Mr Sukhpal Singh, chairman, congratulated the members of the faculty and students.

Students excel in BA-II results

Students of BA-II at Guru Nanak Girls College, Model town, here have achieved 98 per cent result in the annual examination. As many as 114 students got first division. Daljit Kaur has stood first in the college with 77.1 per cent marks while the second and third positions have been secured by Avneet Kaur and Harinder Kaur with 76.4 per cent and 73.5 per cent marks respectively. The Principal of the college, Dr Charanjit Mahal, has congratulated the staff and students for the excellent results.

MTS College

Students of Master Tara Singh College for Women have excelled in BA II results. Ashu has stood first in the college with 74.1 per cent marks, while Deepika Kohli (74 per cent) and Garima Oberoi (73.7 per cent) have got second and third positions respectively. The Principal of the college has lauded the students for their achievements.

DD Jain College

Students of DD Jain College here have come out with flying colours in the BA II university examinations results with a pass percentage of 98.71. Anju has stood first in the college securing 78 per cent marks while Venus has remained second with 76 per cent marks. Neha Gossain has bagged third position with 74.6 per cent marks. The President of the college, Mr Narinder Kumar Jain, and its Principal, Ms Prem Lata Gupta, complimented the students.

AS College students shine

Khanna: Students of AS College for Women have brought laurels to the institute by excelling in the examination conducted by Panjab University in April 2006. According to the college Principal, Dr Rekha Bhardwaj, students achieved 100 per cent result in MA I Hindi and BA III (Hons) in English.

Jagroop and Rajwant Kaur secured the first two positions by getting 68.25 per cent and 67.5 per cent in BA III English (Hons).

Out of 16 students who appeared, nine secured the first division. The first three toppers are Priyanka, Neha Dhir and Shama Chum who scored 65.37 per cent, 65.25 per cent and 65.12 per cent, respectively.

In BA I, 344 students had appeared and the result of 305 has been declared. With the passing of 297 students the result stands at 97.87 per cent. As many as 144 students got more than 60 per cent. While 27 students got more than 70 per cent.

Ms Neeraj Goswami stood first securing 80.77 per cent while Pallavi Joshi got 78 per cent and Shailja Vashisht got 76.12 per cent, respectively, and secured the second and third positions.

The college management has congratulated the Principal, teachers, students and their parents for this marvellous achievement.

KVM faculty presents book reviews

In a series of presentations entitled ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’, under the patronage of its Principal, Mr S C Saxena, KVM teachers gave a presentation of book reviews in the school auditorium here today. Five teachers of the school comprised the first batch of the series.

The presentations by The Reader’s Club members started with the welcome of Principal S C Saxena, in charge (senior section) Aruna Pawar and the heads of various sections. Ms Kirat Grewal, HOD, English Department, gave her presentation on V S Narayane’s ‘Sarojini Naidu.’ Ms Parveen Dang reviewed Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s ‘Wings for Fire’. Ms Reena Kapoor gave presentation on Thomas Alva Edison. Ms Anupam Chibba reviewed ‘How they rose to excellence’ - a book on account of life of great people. The last presentation was by Ms Monica Maini.

The Principal admired this creative effort. Ms Kalpana Sharma gave vote of thanks.

Avtar on PAU Board of Management

The Punjab Government has nominated Mr Avtar Singh Dhindsa member of the Punjab Agricultural University Board of Management. Mr Dhindsa belongs to Langrian village in Sangrur district and is a renowned agriculturist of the region. He is known for flower cultivation and its export.

Menwile, Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar of the PAU, has confirmed Mr Dhindsa’s nomination to the board.
