‘Woman made to expel dead foetus in ward’: GH-16 says no negligence
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 15
It is a catch-22 situation for Davinder Kaur, who took up cudgels with the authorities of General Hospital-16 after alleging harassment at the hands of doctors and attendants in its Gynaecology Department. She may still stick to her claims, but the hospital authorities have wrapped up the inquiry ordered into her allegations, stating that there was no negligence and the patient was discharged in a good condition.

At the heart of the matter is Davinder’s allegation that she was given injections for induced labour but was not shifted from the ward at the time of delivery. Following this she had to deliver in front of everyone in the ward. Not just that, she was harassed and made to clean up the mess.

While the woman is distressed, the hospital authorities today clarified that Davinder was admitted on July 7 with the diagnosis of intra uterine death of foetus at 22 weeks. “Such cases are admitted for abortion and not delivery. Artificial labour is then induced to expel the dead foetus and placenta by injecting medicine through appropriate route. Moreover, no abortion cases are shifted to labour room for evacuation as it causes unhygienic practice and demoralises normal labouring patients,” the DHS said today.

Apart from that, the hospital authorities maintain that after being induced for pains, Davinder was monitored regularly and she expelled the foetus and the placenta spontaneously on July 8. The evacuation, they maintain, was completed by a senior gynaecologist assisted by experienced staff - something which the patient disagrees with.

Another point the hospital is making is that the soiled bed of the patient was changed (though Davinder says she was made to clean up the mess) and the foetus, along with the placenta, handed over to the family, as is the practice.

Dr Usha Bishnoi, Medical Superintendent, said, “The foetus has to be disposed of as per family rituals, but in this case the family refused to accept the foetus and insisted that the same be disposed of by the hospital.” This, she said, was not the practice.

About the patient not being shifted to the labour room, the authorities said she was taken to the procedure room after she expelled the feotus. “In cases of intra uterine death of foetus, a lot of complications arise. So in order to save the life of the patient, she was shifted to the procedure room, which is specifically made for the purpose.”
