Azad flayed for creating new districts
Tribune News Service

Jammu, July 9
The Jammu Mukti Morcha (JMM) today accused Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad of having indulged in the appeasement of the people of Kashmir by creating four new districts in the valley.

Prof Virender Gupta, president of the JMM, said that although the new districts in Kashmir were not recommended by any commission, but Mr Azad created these in the valley only because four districts were to be created in the Jammu division.

He said Srinagar district that was small and compact had been split into four districts without any justification. When the Jammu division gets its due, further doles are showered on the valley, thereby further aggravating the grievances of the people of the Jammu division.

He said the Wazir Commission had more than two decades ago recommended three new districts for Jammu and one district for the Kashmir valley. However, the Kashmiri rulers at that time created three new districts in the valley and denied even a single new district to the Jammu division. Now when Mr Azad, because of his political compulsions, decided to create four districts in Jammu, he indulged in appeasing the people of Kashmir by creating an equal number of seats in the valley.

Prof Gupta said no criteria had been followed in the creation of four districts in the valley. The Kashmir valley has always remained most favoured by successive governments in the state and the Centre, he alleged.

He demanded that five new districts of Nowshera, Ranbirsinghpura, Billawar, Akhnoor and Hiranagar should be created in the Jammu division.

Prof Gupta reiterated his demand for Jammu being granted statehood, as the area would continue to be discriminated till the time it remained with Kashmir valley.

He accused Mr Azad of having overstepped his authority by dictating terms to the Delimitation Commission that would be set up to increase the number of seats in the Assembly.

He criticised Mr Azad for himself earmarking 25 per cent of the increased seats to each Jammu, Kashmir and the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) regions. This would result in increasing the Assembly seats in Kashmir to 58 from the existing 46 and in the Jammu region to 46 from the existing 37, thereby continuing discrimination with the Jammu region that was bigger in size and population.

PM's visit to Pak will help peace process: Mufti
Our correspondent

Jammu, July 9
A former Chief Minister and patron of the ruling PDP, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, has suggested to Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, not to cancel his visit to Pakistan.

Addressing a party convention here today, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said Dr Manmohan Singh should accept the invitation from Pakistan and his visit could further help the process of resolving the external dimensions of the Kashmir issues, including the Siachen and Sir Creek.

The Mufti said the Prime Minister’s decision to set up five working groups for addressing the internal dimensions was a welcome step. He said while the government explored various options for addressing the internal dimensions there was need for holding talks with militants also.

He said for addressing the internal dimensions, the government had been holding talks with political leaders of various hues and added that the dialogue process should involve militants and separatists.

While taking credit for improving the security scenario in the state, when he was the Chief Minister, the Mufti said it was imperative to isolate militants and involve people in the dialogue process. He said he was a firm believer of resolving the problems through “boli(dialogue) not with goli (bullet).”

The former Chief Minister said when he was the head of the government he was instrumental in setting free senior separatist leaders which had contributed to the improvement in the situation.

Hottest day at Srinagar in 31 yrs

Srinagar, July 9
With temperatures soaring high in the northern parts of the country, Srinagar experienced the hottest day in 31 years on Saturday as the mercury rose to 34.5°C, 4.5 degrees above normal.

One person had died of heat stroke on Friday, while several others had fallen unconscious, including 14 schoolchildren.

The deceased, Abdul Karim Sheikh, fell unconscious and died while offering his Friday prayers at a Srinagar mosque.

There was widespread panic among Kashmiris as Srinagar usually plays summer retreat to tourists from the rest of the country from April to June.

“It will get bad, really bad if it does not rain and stays the way it is. I am 62 but I heard yesterday, after what felt like ages, that somebody died of the heat. It is getting hotter every day,” said Ghulam Hassan, a senior resident of the city.

But officials said the situation might get worse, as the temperature is expected to climb to 36 °C in coming days.

“We would like to warn the Srinagar residents that from the last week of June to the third week of July, it will get very hot.

“Unless we get thundershowers in between it will stay hot for these 40 days. We will get back to normal only when the monsoon current strikes Kashmir,” said C. Rao, Director, Meteorological Department here.

Schoolchildren were the worst hit, as several fell unconscious due to the scorching sun. The district administration is considering closure of all schools for the next couple of weeks.

Streets wore a deserted look, as people turned to parks and the local zoo for shade and respite, while ice candies and cold drinks sold like hot cakes. — ANI
