Property built with ill-gotten money attached
Srinagar, June 29 An official spokesman said the land was purchased by Ghulam Rasool Magray in the name of his father for over Rs 24 lakh on which a two-storey house was constructed for over Rs 20 lakh. The present value of the property is estimated at around Rs 75 lakh. The accused also owns two houses at Nowpachi Marwah and Jammu. The accused, Ghulam Rasool Magray from Kishtwar area of Doda, during his posting in the Food and Supplies Department, in league with others, had misappropriated public money about Rs 9.61 crore during the period from 1997 to 2002 by misusing his official position and indulging in corrupt practices. In the course of investigation he was found to have raised a two-storey concrete house at Sarnal, KP Road, Anantnag, out of the ill-gotten money. According to a spokesman, the misappropriation was caused by the excess foodgrains drawn against artificially inflated population of Marwah-Warwan blocks of Kishtwar and additionally by misappropriating the carriage charges meant for such excess foodgrains between 1997 and 2002.It also surfaced during investigation that against actual consuming population of 37,900, Ghulam Rasool Magray and other officials inflated it to 53,500 by fraudulently adding approximately 15,400 non-existent consumers. In this way, approximately 1,70,600 quintals of foodgrains in excess were fraudulently drawn from the government godowns for supplying to the fictitious consumers and their sale proceeds as also the carriage charges misappropriated. |

Tehrik rejects
Jamait-e-Islami order
Jammu, June 29 After three days of the Jamait direction, the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference leadership has reacted by dubbing the Jamait decision as “unconstitutional”. As per the statement, the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference has said that the decision taken at the meeting of the representatives of the Jamait-e-Islami did not “reflect” the feelings of the majority of members because there was “sharp division" at the meeting on the issue. The Tehrik Hurriyat Conference has blamed the Jamait leadership for having adopted dubious tactics by first suspending Mr Geelani, his associate, Mr Ashraf Sehrai and two others from the party and later directing them to either quit the Hurriyat conglomerate or face expulsion from the Jamait. It said that the main aim behind “our suspensions and direction to quit the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference" was to prevent “us from taking part in the Jamait elections.” The elections are due in August and informed sources said that the rift between the moderates, led by the Jamait Amir, Mr Nazir Ahmed Kashani, and the hardliners, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, is the outcome of the latter’s plan to get its supporters elected to the post of the Jamait chief and occupy seats of other office-bearers. Though the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference has not announced its next strategy, indications are that it may field some of its staunch supporters for the post of Amir and for other officer-bearers in a bid to wrest power from the moderates. In case the hardliners fail in doing so, Mr Geelani may prefer to remain associated with the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference. |
