Vet varsity trains HP farmers

Ludhiana, June 28
A batch of 49 farmers and farm women from Kangra district is getting training in dairy farming from experts of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry of GADVASU, Ludhiana. The programme that began on June 27 would end on June 29.

During the programme, 23 lectures would be delivered on various topics such as selection of animals, feeding, fodder production, first aid, health management, vaccination, deworming, clean milk production and preparation of milk products.

The inaugural function was presided over by Dr O.S. Parmar, Director, Extension Education, GADVASU. He said most of the work in dairy farming was done by women and their training would go a long way in its improvement.

Dr R.S. Sahota, Head of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, said dairy farming would be the real saviour for the farmers in the coming time.

A lecture on organic animal rearing was delivered by Dr H.K. Verma.

Dr Nanda is Lead Country Coordinator

Ludhiana, June 28
Dr A. S. Nanda, Director of Research, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, has been appointed by the Regional Co-operation Agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Vienna, Austria, as the “Lead Country Coordinator” for his research and development projects on livestock production.

He will provide technical leadership to the projects and will be involved with the monitoring of the FAO/IAEA livestock research projects currently operational in 12 Asian countries. Dr Nanda will be associated with the technical officers of the FAO/IAEA, Dr P. Boettcher (Guelph, Canada) and Dr P. Vercoe (Germany) for this work. Earlier Dr A. S. Nanda has worked as the technical officer (regional expert for Asia) with the IAEA, Vienna for three years and as their technical consultant, till date.

Overwhelming response to GNIMT admissions

Ludhiana, June 28
Counselling for BBA and BCA classes was held today at Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town. Nearly 980 students applied for admission to 120 seats of BBA/BCA each. Candidates from all over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttranchal and Chandigarh thronged GNIMT campus.

Dr (Col) H.S. Singha, Director GNIMT, expressed immense satisfaction over the response. He said because of awareness and career opportunities available and quality standard by GNIMT, more students were applying for professional courses. Similar response was also there for MBA/MCA management quota seats for which the counselling was being held on July 7. Nearly 400 students who have not taken any entrance test and 789 students who had cleared MAT conducted by All-India Management Association in February and May 2006 had opted for GNIMT for MBA.

Postings to be looked into

Ludhiana, June 28
At a meeting with the Chairman of the zila parishad, Ms Mahender Kaur Dangia, here today, leaders of the Government Primary Teachers Association, Punjab, were assured that problem of postings of ETT teachers to far-off places from their homes would be sorted out.

She said the postings were done by the ADC. The teachers rued that the government had not bothered to keep the rules of postings in mind while giving them new stations. After listening to their complaints, she said she would settle the issue after consulting the ADC. OC

Apparel centre organises interviews for training

Ludhiana, June 28
The Apparel Training and Design Centre, Ludhiana, is conducting interviews for training of SC students. It is being sponsored by the NSCFDC (National Schedule Caste Finance Development Corporation), New Delhi, on July 3.

The interview of students will be taken by a committee comprising of officials from the ATDC, the NSCDC, the PSCLFDC (Punjab Schedule Caste Land Finance Development Corporation, Chandigarh). The SC students will get the training free of cost. Earlier, a batch of 114 SC students had completed their course and were placed in different garment exporting units such as Saubhagya Sales, Nagesh Knitwears, Stanley Industries, Eveline international etc. Now 180 students will be selected for the courses like knit garment manufacturing technology, production supervision and quality control, pattern cutting master course, garment construction course, sewing machine operator course.

The SC students who have submitted their applications will appear for the interview on July 3 before the constituted committee.

The ATDC is also getting good response from general category students. Hence, the last date for submitting the forms for the general category has been extended to accommodate more students in July 2006 session.

Summer camp concludes

A month-long summer camp organised by Little Blossom School, at Punjabi Bhawan, concluded here today. The function was presided over by ex-Deputy DEO, Ms Manjeet Kaur. The chief guest was Mr Ajay Johar. Ms Kochar, Principal, extolled the virtues of summer camp and said that the students during the period had learnt many new things and had developed their personality.

Mr Ajay Johar said the students should adopt new technology so as to compete with the world. He appreciated the cultural activities presented by the students. Ms Manjeet Kaur, too, had enjoyed the cultural programme.
