Admn to start coaching for EWS students

Chandigarh, June 28
The Chandigarh Administration has prepared an action plan to start extra coaching classes so as to enhance academic potential of children lacking support at home and provide better opportunity to economically weaker and socially underprivileged students.

It has also been decided to start a helpline to provide proper counseling and guidance to the students in order to minimise stress and improve academic performance.

According to the action plan, underprivileged students will be given extra coaching for Classes IX to XII and competition classes for JET and other such courses after Class X examination and PMT, AIEEE, CET, CHD, for integrated course of law and other competitive examination after Class XII.

The Director Public Instructions (Schools) will call for applications through school principals and then identify beneficiaries on the basis of student’s economic and social background and academic performance at the lower examinations. Initially, coaching will be imparted at the Government High School, Sector 23, and the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, or any other institution deemed fit. For the implementation of this action plan, Rs 25 lakh, has been earmarked. The faculty for this scheme will be richly qualified and motivated, having professional experience for running such courses and teaching will be result oriented.

Plans to start a full fledged 3-year degree course in Fashion Designing in Government Home Science College are also being finalised.

This action plan has been prepared in a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Education-cum-Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan, in connection with the implementation of the recommendations of the Sub-Group on Education of the Administrator’s Advisory Council. The Vice–Chancellor, Panjab University, Mr K.N. Pathak, the Director Public Instructions (Colleges)-cum-Joint Secretary Finance, Mrs Raji P. Srivastava, the Director Public Instructions (Schools), Mr Ashwani Kumar and an eminent educationist, Mrs K. Atma Ram were part of the sub-group.

Admissions 2006
Free Urdu classes at GGDSD College- 32

Chandigarh, June 28
The Chandigarh office of Language Department, Punjab, would be starting free Urdu classes from July 3. These classes would be held at the GGDSD College, Sector 32, here. These classes would be held from 5.15pm to 6.15pm on all working days. Anyone from Mohali, Chandigarh or Panchkula interested to take admission can contact the Assistant Director (Hindi/Punjabi cell) Mini Secretariat, Punjab basement, Sector 9, Chandigarh, from 9 am to 5 pm or the Urdu teacher at the college during study hours.

Masters in women studies

For graduates interested in a course in women studies can join the masters course in women studies offered by the Centre for Women Studies, Panjab University. At the international level, various UN organisations and agencies apart from other voluntary organisations specifically demand expertise in the field. The MA course started by the centre provides grounding to students in practical skills such as gender analysis and training as well as in field work from the comprehensive coverage of theoretical issues in women studies and gender.

Principal honoured

Dr Shashi Jain, Principal, Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, has been conferred the prestigious Balraj Sahni National Award for education and social service by the All-India Artists Association of Shimla and Mumbai.

Dr Jain has been honoured for her distinguished work contribution towards many social and charitable institutions. She has been a blood donor 36 times till date. The award was conferred by Himachal Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gangu Ram at a function held in Shimla recently.

China invites professor

Professor Raj Pal Sharma, Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, has been invited as a guest professor by Jilin University, China for four months. This is one of the leading universities in China. During his visit, he will deliver lectures and work on a research topic of immense industrial importance. He is the first faculty member of the Chemistry Department to visit China.

PU campus to have dental institute

Chandigarh, June 28
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued the letter of intent to Panjab University to start Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences on its campus with an annual admission capacity of 100 students in the BDS course.

A fax from the ministry in this regard was received by the Vice-Chancellor here today.

Inspectors of the Dental Council of India have recommended to the Central Government to grant its permission to establish a new dental institute on the PU campus. TNS

2 murder accused get police remand

Panchkula, June 28
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A.D. Gaud has remanded two murder accused, Deepak and Rakesh, alias Bobby, to one-day police custody. Deepak and Rakesh, who were arrested by the CIA staff of the Panchkula police a couple of days ago, were produced before the court.

Deepak, a resident of Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh, was arrested for hacking to death Mauli Jagran-based woman Sapna after raping her. According to the police, Deepak murdered her after arguments over money and later dumped her body in a forest area at Nada village along the Panchkula-Morni road. He was nabbed by the police from calls made and received from Sapna’s mobile phone. The semi-naked body of Sapna, a resident of Mauli Jagran, was found in the forest area adjacent to the Morni T-point on June 18.

Another suspect Rakesh was also remanded to police custody for a day for his alleged involvement in the Naresh murder case. Rakesh, along with his accomplice Gurinder Singh and Hanish, had shot dead Naresh Kumar and later dumped his body in Mauli village. The suspect was an accomplice of a hardcore militant and used an Ascent car in transporting Naresh’s body to the dumping site. The body of Naresh Kumar was found dumped in Mauli village on April 30.
